Stableford on Old

Perth's long summer continues to provide excellent golfing conditions. A bit of cloud, but mostly blue skies, the occasional light wind and high 20's.

This was the last game of the 2020/2021 fixtures list is a stableford competition on the Old Course and was followed by the SOS Golf Group's Annual General meeting held at the Perry Lakes picnic area.

The game attracted 17 players including guest Paul Boquest returning for another round.

Perry Lakes Post Game Meeting

After the game all players met at the Perry Lakes picnic area and enjoyed a range of cool drinks and platters of food from Subway - magnificently presented by the Entertainment Committee.

The bottle of Gunpowder Gin, won last week by Bernie, was sampled by several together with a splash of tonic!

Not a kookaburra was in sight throughout the meeting (were they culled?) however, had been replaced by a number of magpies which were more discrete in their approach but no less keen for a beak-full of food.

The Results

The podium winners scored 41, 40 & 39 points respectively and bagged a total of 5 birdies!

Congratulations to Gim Ong for claiming 1st place with a score of 41 points, which included birdies on the 3rd and 6th holes!

Gim tops the podium and displays her $40 gift card!

Gary Burgess and Gerry Tessier were 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Perhaps 'Longest aggregate distance after 2 shots, both of which must come to rest on the fairway' is less ambiguous?

Eagles & Birdies

No Eagles!

However, a total of 9 birdies from 6 players was an excellent result from a relatively modest field of 17 players!

No doubt, many others had narrow misses as the recently cored greens continued to play slow!

President's Report

"The 2020 / 2021 golfing calendar provided unique challenges for the club as CoVid-19 arrived in late March resulting in both the Wembley Golf Course and the SOS club closing down all competitions. A six week wait was enforced prior to continuing play with modified rules and conditions in the interest of personal safety.

The committee managed the situation well with virtual meetings, continued communications and changes to match bookings along with fixture alterations. Some of the CoVid-19 enforced changes have remained being identified as improvements to process.

The restrictions to playing conditions impeded the scheduled match against the WABGA with the fixture being cancelled. The club generously donated $400.00 to the WABGA and the annual competition will resume in April of the 2021 / 2022 fixture year.

Membership is currently 33, with additionally one non-playing social member. We welcome as new members Glenn Kelly, Birgit Reinartz, Gerry Tessier, James Weaver, Maureen Sundari, Lynley Hunter and Darren Headley. Sadly we have lost a number of long standing members with Paul and Kerry Gardner relocating to the UK, Ross Campbell, Rob Gray, Richard Yeo have moved to mid-week golf arrangements, and Alana Birch, Jeanie Rees (who may return), Thomas Reilly, Phil Wear as well as our 2 junior members Max Patriarca and Jack Tylich.

The club donated $200.00 to the Park Honour Avenues Group which was supported through the collected fines in November with club members being generous in support with their donations.

We have recently received a 2nd order of new club shirts, and thank our sponsor, Lot Six Zero, for the generous support which helps to keep prices lower.

Christmas in August was held at the Gardiner’s residence and attended in good spirit and numbers. Sadly this also was the final social gathering for the club to farewell Paul and Kerry as they relocated to the UK some weeks later.

The Country Cup competition was held at Mandurah Country Club on 27 September, the field was larger than most experienced in recent times and included a record number of guest players.

On 21 November the Annual Dinner took place again at Al Fornetto in Doubleview, the evening was well attended by members and partners, credit to the organising committee in support of a great night out.

Barry and Jenny Treak very kindly entertained us at their house in Woodlands for the “Christmas Cheer” event in late December. Again a well-attended event with the host’s support that was very much appreciated.

Lake Claremont was the venue for another Par 3 competition held on January 11th, followed by a meal and drinks. Glen Pope finished with the best score, and Gerry Tessier carried off the handicap award.

Special thanks throughout the year to celebrity Bloggers Peter, Birgit, Derek and Paul. Those assistants and venue owners supporting our social events. A big thank you to the committee who have filled the required roles to perform club duties that without we simply would not have a club to belong too.

A special thanks to Vicki Scarff who continue to provide silent support to the running of the SOS club under the guidelines.

The President proposed a vote of thanks to the committee."

Next Week

The Opening Day and Perry Lakes Cup will be held on 27 March on the Tuart Course. It will be a stableford competition.

This event was deferred last year due to the CoVid-19 shutdown, and subsequently won by Kerry Gardner before leaving later in the year for the UK! Does anyone know where it is?
