Fellowship Day

Well, that was fun.

Hosts welcoming WABGA

An absolutely perfect day weather-wise, with a spectacular blue sky that looked like it had come out of a paint pot.

(Sorry the blog's late - I had a very busy Saturday evening and Sunday morning. People have been phoning up!!)

The blind golfers had come to play, with a good turn out of seven players to take on the very best that SOS had to offer.

Dave Martin sets out the strategy

An altogether better class of caddie

Having lost to WABGA by the narrowest of margins last year, SOS was keen to put in a very competitive display.

They're not letting us play with the blind golfers

And to give ourselves an edge, we exhorted the WABGA to relax and enjoy themselves before the game, reminding them that all that really mattered was that they had fun.

A bit complicated, but I think we've nailed it

Noah and Peter Heinrich

I think they took us at our word.

We're just going to enjoy ourselves!

There were a couple of very close contests, where we just edged them out.

You can touch it if you want, but we're keeping it.

But in all seriousness, it was a great day, thoroughly enjoyed by most.

The sausage sizzle was very popular - the blind golfers were very impressed, especially when Shelley and Steph brought out the tablecloths.

A number of the WABGA players commented on how much pleasanter it was than having the wrap up at Wembley.

Everyone found the venue without any difficulty.

We're coming again next year

And a special thanks to all those who helped organise the game, brought their chairs, cooked the sausages, brought the salads and the drinks, and helped clear up, which was most of us.  Like we always say, if everyone does a bit, no-one has to do a lot. Thank you and well done.

On the first tee

So, to the results.

We've got a plan..

For the SOS golfers, an oustanding round from Peter, and good to see Gary back on top of his game.

And in the contest with the WAGBA, Shelley and Lynne just managed to edge their opponents in a couple of very close games. Derek, Gary and Paul had comfortable wins, and Earle and John found themselves up against a couple of very good players.

Expecting a hard-fought contest

So, overall, 5-2 in favour of SOS, and honour is restored after last year's narrow loss.

Club Championship, Round 1

Extra big thanks to Vickie for blogmeistering in my absence. Great blogs, and good to keep in touch across the Great Divide.

Yes, it was stroke today.  There was a fair bit of "Why can't I just pick this ball up and move to the text tee?" Can get pretty testing when you've actually got to get that ball into the hole, come what may. And commiserations to Max, who actually did pick the ball up and try to walk off to the next tee. Two penalty strokes unfortunately.

You will all have noticed the weather, which turned out decidedly clement in the end, in spite of BOM's direst warnings. The committee eventually decided that the sausage sizzle had been cancelled because it was too warm, rather than because of the impending downpour and thunderstorm. That's what the minutes will say, anyway.

Next week, we're hosting the WA Blind Golfer's Association. Why, you ask? Because ever such a long time ago, it was decided that it would be a good idea to share our love of the game with a group such as this, so the Fellowship Day was instituted. We believe (correct me if you know better), that at the time a member of the club was an eye doctor who recognised the value that such an association could bring, so the SOS (Save our Sight) club was born. And we've been it ever since.

The intention at this stage is to have a sausage sizzle after the game, weather permitting and the WABGA being happy with this plan. We'll make a decision later in the week (yes, by watching BOM forecast again!)

Yep, I think we're all in the shot

Should we go ahead with the plan, can you all bring any fold-up chairs, picnic tables, pop-up canopies that you have in the shed. We'll be a larger group than usual.

Conversation overheard at the Scarff household this morning

Other news - Jake has put his third card in, a very creditable 87 off the stick, and the committee have approved his application for membership. Good to have you on board, Jake.

And looking way, way ahead into the distance, Gary has booked us in at Secret Harbour for the Country Cup on September 30th  and Glen has organised for the Annual Dinner to be held on the 17th December at Al Fornetto on Scarborough Beach Road (yes, we haven't been sitting on our hands in the committee).

Well-deserved, Peter

A big thanks to Greg for his generous sponsorship this week, and congratulations to Peter for a very steady round.

So, get down to the shed and dust off all those fold-up chairs, tables and canopies ready for next Saturday. You wouldn't want to have to drink standing up all afternoon would you, now?

And if you have any photos of your own from today, please email or message them over to me - it's no problem to update the blog.
