Perry Lake Cup

Perfect conditions for the opening day of the 2021-2022 season featuring a round of golf at Royal Wembley to compete for the Perry Lake Cup so generously donated by the renowned Lorenzo Ferrentino in 2014.

The stableford competition was on the Tuart Course where the greens were a lot faster than the cored Old Course which had been played over the last several weeks. For those not prepared, putts consistently over-shot the hole making three putts, and sometimes 4, an inevitability!

The Game

There were several highlights of the day, one of which is covered later in the blog.

Another was what Barry did to his non motorised buggy on the 15th fairway! Having launched a massive drive down the center right of the fairway, Barry was feeling very ebullient in the knowledge  the ball must have traveled well over 200 meters. So, after leaving the tee he gave his buggy a shove so that it could free-wheel down the hill.  Well, the buggy kept on going and going and going until it ran into the trees on the right side of the fairway, only 100 metres or so from the green!!  Barry had to walk another half a kilometre to retrieve his bag of clubs in order to take his second shot!

Opening Day 2021 - 2022

Following his re-election as President at the AGM last week, Brett Fordham welcomed members and a guest, Gordon Gryzb, to the post game meeting.

Brett advised that a new single sheet fixtures list has been issued which contains, apart from the weekly competition fixtures, the names of current Office Holders, a diary, current trophy holders and names of life members. Copies were handed out to those present and, for those not present, additional copies can be obtained from the communications officer.

Keep it handy in case you need to contact a committee member.

HOLE IN ONE

It is not every year that a member lands a hole in one, but Earle Scarff holed out with his tee shot on the par 3, 6th hole!  Very loud cheers were heard by other groups on the course.

Earle's hole-in-one record now totals two, having achieved the feat some years ago.

Earle Scarff holds up the ball that he "holed in one" on the par 3, 6th hole,
as Club Captain Gerry Tessier awards him the $25 prize.

The Results

Congratulations to Peter for scoring 36 stableford points to win the Perry Lake Cup by one point from Brett Fordham and another point from Birgit in 3rd place.

Remarkably, Brett scored a total of 4 birdies which included the index 1 hole.

Raffle

The churn of the raffle balls received Presidential treatment this week as Brett called out the numbers.

The winner, possibly Greg or Colin, won 1st prize and claimed the $10 and a scratchie !

Peter won 2 balls with consecutive numbers - numbers 8 & 9 !

Brett spins the cage and checks his numbers first 😂 !

Barry & Derek waiting for their numbers to come up !

Golden Hole

No winner this week which makes the Jackpot just $18 as the pot went off the last week the Tuart was played!

However, the Old Course jackpot is currently at $197 and players will get a chance to win in 2 weeks time when Ladies Day is held there.

Novelties

Some fine golf strokes get your name on the Novelty Markers, somewhat hogged this week by players in the first group!

But a hole in one is in another class and Earle rightly deserves high praise for his achievement.

Birdies

Perhaps Greg Bennett can dig into the club archives and find out when someone last scored 4 birdies, including an index 1 hole.

Ash Tray Collection

Francis did an excellent job in calling out the list of fine-able events having earned the honor and a bag of lollies for scoring at the lower end.

Someone has to win the bag of lollies - this week it is Frances !

Members dug deep and kept the coins flowing for their misdeeds!

Next Week

The Easter Cup is the prize for next weeks competition which again is stableford on the Tuart Course.

Last year the Easter Cup was contested late in the year due to COVID restrictions and was won by Peter Baird.
