MEMORIAL TROPHY

MEMORIAL TROPHY

A stroke competition, in memory of those members that we have lost, while they were still active members.

.

It was, by all accounts, a warm day. Glen Pope got in a bit of trouble:

After a thorough investigation of the options, he decided to call an unplayable and returned to the tee. Probably the wisest call.

The forecast was for something quite unpleasant, but in the best SOS tradition, the weather had other ideas, and the highest temperature recorded was 28 degrees, at 8:30am, after which a bit of breeze stopped it getting any higher.

Bring on a bit of that breeze

A hard-fought contest, with a winner on countback, and the usual suspects disputing the minor placings.

A surprising occupant of the most honest player position, but hey, we all have those days from time to time.

The Winning Circle
Spectators on the 15th tee

There were, of course, novelties:

Nearest the tree on the first!! - Gary, then Gardy, but Hilly got closest. We’re not sure whether he was thus snookered for the green or not.

Beautiful fading drive from James on the 4th.

The Ladies’ longest drive on the notorious 4th - Carol on the marker, but outpointed by Shelley

Lynne in a bit of trouble here - fortunately Puggy was on hand for a bit of welcome (not) advice....

Nearest the pin in three on the 13th - a slew of contenders here, with Keith, Popey, Shelley in contention, but Greg Bennett nailed it out of the bunker!

.

The Men’s longest drive - always a true test of masculinity. Today saw Boris in the running, but Popey got further, Gerry further still but none could match Goochy.

.

And of course, the old favourite - nearest the pin on the 18th. Keith was on the green, Gerry was better, Shelley fancied her chances, but again Goochy nailed it.

.

A remarkable achievement that went under the radar a bit - Popey hitting an eagle on the 15th, with an iron from 130 metres.  Well done, that man.

.

Keith and Carol shared a cart, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to prevent Carol incurring a two-shot penalty on the 6th - for teeing off from the men’s tee! He was apparently recording the previous scores on the card, and failed to look up to save the occasion. Nevertheless, we understand it was still his fault.

.

Well done, contenders and winners alike. Now, how many of us recognise this couple?

Early Oct, Mike Waters and Christine Deng passed through Perth while enroute to Brisbane for their son's wedding. Gim managed to meet them for dinner, on the only overlapping day, since she had just returned from Singapore that morning.

Mike  & Chris send their regards to SOS golf members. They retired in Malaysia (Ipoh) next to the golf course, so if Ipoh is on your itinerary, do pop in and say hi.

For those new to the club, Mike was Glen before Glen was, methodically recording each member's booking for the following week in his big book, and rigorously recording credits, debits etc. It was in the days before direct debits and bank transfers, when we all turned up religiously with cash in the right amount.

Ah, the good old days...

Next week, it's Ambrose 4 S  on the OLD at 7.24 am

Formula

Groups of four players  ( 4person ambrose) work as a team. Each player hits off the tee, the best shot is selected, and all other players pick up their ball and place it, within one handspan, alongside the best ball. Each person then hits a second shot from the same spot. The best shot is again selected. This continues until the ball is in the hole. On the putting green the best ball is marked, and the other balls are played from this position.

Each player in the team must use a minimum of 3 drives. If you have a special requirement to play with someone, advise Shelley  before Wednesday afternoon, 3h pm. Of course, she will try to accommodate…as usual

Handicap per team will be published on the fixtures of the day issued by Shelley

In case we can not complete all the team of 4 players - The captain and booking officer will arrange it and adjust the Handicap - accordingly

Today, there was no debriefing after the game, because it was the day of the

ANNUAL DINNER!

.

Always a gala occasion, and this year was no exception.

All the glitterati were present, where we enjoyed the early evening on the brand new deck at Lot Six Zero,

while early hunger pangs were being assuaged with a range of appetizers

Before moving inside to be entertained by Goochy and Gerry and introduced to the trophy winners of the season, all the while chowing down on delicious comestibles.

.

Drinks there were a-plenty, of both the vinous and cicerone variety. Old friendships were consolidated while new ones were initiated, and an all-round good time was had by all.

Goochy reminded us of how he came to be accepted into the group, stumbling upon us while his wife was away in Denmark - this one -  - and he was wondering how to fill his lonely weekend, so decided to go to Wembley and see if anyone would let him play. Fortunately for SOS, he found us.

.

Appreciations were made to Shelley, for herding cats on a weekly basis, Carol and her helpers for the great social events,

to Greg for his statistical prowess and support, to Peter for his valuable expertise and efforts in our financial affairs, to Andrea for her virtuosity in vice-captaincy, to Gerry for effecting and maintaining the tone and ethos of the club, in prioritising enjoyment and engagement.

There were fines - the last week of the Diggers’ month, where we support returned service personnel charities. There was the full range of penalties, including dam busters, lone pine, creeping barrage, uniform irregularities, misfire, misuse of weapon, sas training, insubordination, tanking, shell craters, empty magazine, excessive use of radar, awol, and exceptions for those who had undertaken military service. (captaincy of SOS doesn’t count).

Puggy channels his inner Roman

Gerry handed out the trophies (mostly to Keith), and reminded us that the Christmas Cheer experience is to be held on December 9th, and will be at Kerry’s domicile.

More details will, of course, follow, as will your comprehensive list of trophy winners, eclectic performance, etc.

At the end of the evening, there was spirited bidding for the decorations - jars filled with fancy lights and baubles, created by Carol, surrounded by wreaths created by Frances. Calculating a reasonable daily rate for time and materials, Frances suggests that a retail price of around $150 each would be appropriate for the wreaths, so clearly great bargains were had by the lucky bidders last night.

Many thanks to all those of you who sent in pictures - so many from so many different sources this week

.

And finally, an enormous thanks to Glen and Lindsay, who not only sponsor the club throughout the year, but provide us with an excellent venue for the dinner - unfortunately for them, we’ve come to feel quite at home at Lot Six Zero.

Have they all gone yet?
