SOS Golf Stableford - Tuart Course 22 February 2020

A substantial early morning rain storm passed over the Perth foothills heading to the south east, leaving a mere spattering of rain over Wembley golf course as the SOS contingent geared up for the start.

And a most welcome back to Colin Kerr after a 13 month absence and also to Ian Holmes who has recently completed an epic Australia wide trip!

Golfing conditions were excellent with little wind, dry conditions and considerable cloud cover.

Admiring the rain splatters on the tiles.
This is about as wet as it got!

Fortified by a week of online self-help golf browsing, most headed off to the driving range for a last bit of fine tuning.

Oh! To have such flexibility!

Then again, a fine set of abs can also help !

As usual, members managed to produce a wide array of scores with over half the field involved in count-backs. Scores of 28, 29 and 32 were produced by 10 players!

A quiet beer as we wait for another group to clear 'our' table.

However, Tony Gooch carried away the 1st prize with a score of 41 points - four points clear of the field. For the statistically minded, last week Tony only managed 2nd place with an identical score !

Consistency wins the day !

Here are the results showing that it is always useful to include a birdie :

Treasurer releases the SOS 2019 Financial Statements and budget for 2020

No doubt members who opened their emails on Saturday night were delighted to see the club's 2019 financials, which are to be considered at the upcoming AGM, and studied them late into the night (or not?).

One reason for the late posting of this blog is that the blog meister got tied up considering ways to fix the continuing deficit which the Treasurer focuses on in her report.  My attention was particularly drawn to the historic record of Ash Tray collections which have ebbed and flowed in what seems to be a most haphazard fashion from year to year. Does it reflect the Australian economy, the well being of the club members or, indeed, the average handicap score of members. Better golf means less fine producing strokes, does it not?

Is this why 2019 recorded the lowest takings in total, and by individual member, in half a decade?

Here are the basic numbers over recent years:

Not quite sure what to make of these numbers but, it is obvious that if members were to get rid of their 5c and 10c pieces at the supermarket checkouts and concentrate on financial self-flagellation when donating to the Ash Tray, it might just save the SOS Golf Group's fortunes!

Until next week . . . . . 💫  💤

SOS GOLF GROUP - 15 February 2020

SOS Golf 15 February  -  Old Course Stableford

Dawn at the course !

The day dawned with an early sea mist and almost total cloud cover throughout the day, both exceptional meteorological phenomenon compared with the incessant blistering heat SOS members have had to endure over the last many months. There was even the very occasional sprinkle of rain, almost enough to open up the umbrellas!

At 7 am starting to clear !

It was business at usual for the booking officer as members milled around his table deciding whether or not to gamble $1.20 for the Eagles Nest and Jackpot prizes, the latter now $109 and growing!

Most chose to take the gamble !

Five groups comprising 17 members tee'd off on the Old Course commencing at 8.50 am, a full 20 minutes earlier than the scheduled 9.10 am start - another exceptional occurrence.

Despite the cooler conditions the humidity, at in excess of 80%, took its toll on the less fit!
While the men sweated, the women just glowed !!

Only 3 birdies were recorded for the round and Barry Treak did not need one to score a very agreeable 42 stableford points to carry off 1st prize. Not satisfied by picking up a $45 voucher, Barry also took out the Raffle's top draw for another $10!

Barry - modest in victory !

And the results were:

Tony won the 2nd prize, one point back on 41, for a handy $15 voucher.

With Max cleaning up 3rd spot for $5 on 36 points, on a count back from Shelley.

Jackpot Report

For another week, every attempt at the Jackpot hole fell short, long, left, right or anywhere apart from close proximity to the hole - resulting in the Old Course 'pot' increasing to $109.  The Tuart course 'pot' is currently $116.

Novelty Holes

Which brings us to the novelty holes where Tony featured heavily; perhaps due in part to his position in the first group, but only cleaned up on hole 2. Nice play also from Glen, Max and Paul!

And . .  my apologies for not getting this blog out earlier, due largely to issues relating to accessing my Google 'gmail' account, which I seem to only use for gaining access to the SOS blog site! Now, all sorted, so expect a more punctual report next week!
