Match Play, Round 3

Wet, wet, wet.

Should have spent a bit more and got those balls that float

One of those wonderful days when it teemed down on the first tee, and the greens were puddled.

Brett discovers his usual touch around the greens may need a little adjustment today

The first few holes were crazy golf, where balls stopped dead on the green - that is until you decided to really smack it one, at which point it flew effortlessly into the bunker on the other side.

And aren't we all looking forward to playing crazy golf here soon?

But that's golf.

Not skimping on the wet weather gear today

And it's match play, so no-one counts the strokes once the hole's over.

Nice and dry in here

After all, an eleven still beats a twelve.

So - we made the best of it, and kept smiling (mostly).

I'm going to hit him with a bit of calisthenics on the second nine
 - should be enough to put him off

Upcoming birthdays for Don and Ben.

Derek's best glove (you should have seen the other one)

And an advance notice for the Country Cup - we're booked into Sun City for the day after the AFL Grand Final. It's an 8am tee-off, Colin's taking bookings for a bunk in his Motorhome the night before, he'll be parked by the first tee.

BYO sausages for the barbecue, though

So, the Golden Hole remained unclaimed today. Let's face it, it would be a tad unsporting to go for it when there's only $15 in the pot. Meanwhile, the pot on the Tuart has grown to the princely sum of - wait for it - absolutely nothing.

Finished with maximum points

The novelties, plenty of competition this week, but the eventual winners were:

NTP

2nd
Brett
NTP
In 3
8th
Earle
NTP
In 2
13th
Ciaran
LD

12th
Roland

A few people not in competition today, their results:

Charmaine 28 pts
Roland       28 pts
Kerry         29 pts
Graeme     34 pts

My grandpa got 28 points!

Graeme surprised us all, and most of all himself, with birdies on the 1st and 16th. Well done, mate.

And this is after a win...imagine if he'd lost

There's been some discussion about the finer points of how to handle those frustrating moments that can crop up anywhere during the round. I'd like to point members to this very brief but very useful coaching video.

And now, the competition that really mattered - the third round of the match play:

As a result of which, eight players go through to the quarter final. Derek and Bernie very kindly vacated their positions in the final eight, so that other, more desperate players could have a go. (Actually, they won't be here for all the finals rounds)

Mister three-time-loser

Which means, the pairings for the quarter finals are as follows:

Brett

Colin
Ciaran
v
Gordon
Phil McCloud

Gary

We wish them all the best for hard-fought rounds played in the best spirit. Remember, if you haven't enjoyed the round, you've both lost!

Match Play, Round 2

The Red Devils

Another day of nail-biting tension as the Match Play Competition moves into its second week. With two points for a win, one for an all square result, and absolutely nothing for a loss, the potential finalists are beginning to come out of the woodwork.

Sweetness and light on the first tee

So, without more ado, let's get straight down to the results.

First, the novelties.

Phil McKeague

We note in passing that Phil McKeague managed to score birdies on the 8th, 10th, 11th, and 17th. Hitting form just when you don't want to be playing against him in Match Play. And 35 Stableford points for Roland, who managed to compete very effectively against himself in a one-man competition.

The sign says it all

And, in anticipation of his birthday next week, Gary managed to pick up the Golden Hole Jackpot, which stood at a respectable $73. Should be just enough for the babysitter when you take Lin out to celebrate.
Rita after a bit of a tumble
Hope it warms up a bit.
By the way, did you know that golf is a contact sport. Apparently over 13,000 people go to the emergency room each year from the golf course. Click here to see why.
Hurry up and take that picture

Rita would like to mention that had personal experience of that wonderful expression "going arse over tit" this afternoon - fortunately her airbags deployed in time and there were no serious injuries, although Ron did rush over and volunteer to rub them better.

And what of the competition itself? Mostly close fought tussles, with the competition coming down to the last few holes. Not too many gimmes on the putting green, we gather - true match play intensity.

Give him the putt? Tell him he's dreaming.

So, next week, Round 3, before we move on to the finals. And we'll congregate afterwards at Wembley again, unless it's pouring with rain.

Match Play, Round 1

So, how do we mark the card?

Look, it's not that hard..

How many cards do we need?

I'll explain as we go round

Who putts out first?
Dormie? Dormie who?

Do we get one club length?

I'll explain once more...

What happens with branches in the bunker?

Do I get extra strokes for the snappy shorts?

So how does the handicap work?

That's right, it's Match Play time. Look, it's really not that complicated, is it? Basically, the person who wins the hole goes one up. Unless it's all square, in which case you stay the same. Unless they have to give you a stroke on that hole. But only if it's index...

Oh, all right. It is a bit complicated.

Ciaran's 254m drive on the 10th.

But, we kind of managed all right. And had fun. Mostly.

However, there is a different dynamic to the game when you're playing against the person standing next to you.

I think we've psych'd each other out

Now to the nitty gritty. Shelley wants to know if anyone's interested in buying white shirts for the summer. And she's going to investigate if we can get long sleeved ones, too.

World's most expensive drinks. $26.80 for two bottles.
There have been some comments about it being very expensive when we go back to the Boulevard. Mainly because we head off to the Red Dot store afterwards and buy all that junk we think will come in really useful someday?

There's a certain relief that that's all over for another week.
So, next week, unless it's raining, we'll tough it out back at Wembley.

The Golden Hole jackpots to $49 next week.

Ian, on being told he'll have to play Lynne again next week.

A good round from Ben, 93 off the stick. So good, the committee has approved his application for membership. Congratulations, Ben, and welcome.

On fire. Her golf's not bad either.

And now, the results of the Match Play, round 1.  Two points for a win, one for a draw.

Frances, for a birdie on the 3rd

And Richard for a birdie on the 10th.

Vickie's determined to get some action this week

Remember: “Golf… is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well.” – P.G. Wodehouse

Phew.

So, round two of the Match Play next week. Be nice.

WA Week Cup

This is what we're playing for - the WA Week Cup

A bit of a jumper on again, off again sort of day, but we avoided the rain and the sun came out for the second nine.

Looking a little bit like golfers

With $140 on the Golden Hole, that was certainly worth playing for as well.
That's more like it

Birthdays to Steve Desantis.

A match made in heaven

Lynne has headed off to Hong Kong to see her fourth grandchild.

Didn't end up there on the practice shot

A warm welcome back to Tony Lee - just so he felt wanted we generously allowed him to sponsor the prize.

So I slept in! Jealous, or what?

Ben Barnes presented his second card, with a very respectable 88 off the stick.

I was just feeling a bit unfocussed today

Ciaran's mate Sean came as a guest, and pulled in 32 Stableford points.

Ciaran's mate, Sean.

Congatulations to Phil McKeague on the birth of a baby boy.
Best chip of the day
Things just weren't adding up

Shelley has some shirts, but will be putting in a fresh order in two weeks time, so let her know if you need a new one.

Good to be back

Birdie on the 19th
The next three weeks will be the round robin phase of the Match Play. Earle will be distributing a reminder of the rules that are specific to Match Play. The groups are as follows:
