Match Play Round 3

Twenty paired SOS members and one guest, Mark Wilson, lined up at the Tuart Course for the 3rd round of the annual match play competition.

It was a relatively late start at 9.40 am, particularly as the winter solstice occurred last week!  Blue skies, a light wind and a very cold start to the day had everyone rugged up on the first tee!

Maureen and Keith dressed for the chilling conditions!

Gary, Derek & Shelley also taking no chances!

Peter, Barry & Mark H all looking confident !

Keith & Frances protected by quilted anoraks!

On the course

There were no reports of out of control wireless buggies diving into distant water hazards, snake bite or injured wildlife!  Perhaps match play competition brings out the 'killer instinct' in SOS members and the level of concentration is much greater than for any other form of competition?  Match play turns every hole into a competition in itself !

The blogger managed to capture the moment Brett took his 2nd stroke on the par 4, 9th hole. The hole is designated as 310 metres long and includes a significant uphill section for the first 150 metres or so. Nevertheless, Brett's tee shot had a serious turn of speed as it flew off the tee and disappeared in the direction of the green. It stopped some 3 metres short of the green!  While we were all very impressed it took Brett an additional 3 shots to hole the ball for a par!!

President's Message

The SOS Golf Group President, Brett Fordham, welcomed members and guest to the post match meeting.

Brett noted that Dave Williamson will be celebrating his birthday next Friday, 2 July, and that Don Beasley's birthday is next Wednesday, 30 June.  Congratulations and best wishes for many more were extended to Don and Dave!

Next Week

On Saturday 2 July 2021 the 5th round of the club championship will be played on the Old Course.

Please do not forget to remit $48 (course fees increased by $1 from 1 July) to Glen before 5pm on Wednesday if you wish to play.

Club Championship Round 3

It was after 9.30 am before the first group managed to launch its balls off the 1st tee of the Tuart Course to contest the 3rd round of the Club Championship competition.

A total of 24 players set off with guest, Mark Wilson, included in the first group.  The temperature was chilly, with most wearing at least 3 layers of top clothing throughout the entire round! At times the sun came out from behind the clouds and, with little to no wind, it made for very pleasant golfing weather!

Carol, Glenn, Vickie & Frances rugged up!

Gerry, Shelley & Earle smiling at the start!

The Game

There were some truly remarkable results from the days' competition! Multiple Golden Hole contenders and spectacular shots coming off the clubs of some not accustomed to low handicaps!

Then, of course, there were those that had to contend with a fair bag of hooks, slices and similar misdirected shots.  Putting as well tested the limits of sanity from time to time!

As experienced last week on the Old Course, the blue and red tee markers were often on top of each other to allow tee surfaces to recover from the recent heavy rains.

Frances tees off behind the blue markers
on hole 5 while Ian looks on!

President's Address

President Brett Fordham starts the post match proceedings
with advice the clubs' finances were in good shape!

Also, Brett confirmed the position of Social Organiser had recently been changed with Tony James stepping down, due to increased work commitments, and the position being taken by Carol Barrow. Carol already has a few ideas including holding an 'International Day'. Stay tuned!

Brett also advised the Treasurers recent monthly report showed the SOS Golf Group's actual cash funds at mid year were higher than had been budgeted! The Committee had identified some areas of expenditure that could be increased where essentially all members would benefit. Additional 'Sausage Sizzles', higher cash prizes and additional raffle prizes will be provided.

Birthdays

Brett noted that long time member and recent Club Captain, Gary Burgess, will be celebrating his birthday on Monday 21st June. Happy Birthday Gary !

The Results

Winners are grinners!!
Shelly, Stephanie and Barry take the podium and receive
gift cards from Club Captain, Gerry Tessier.

Shelley takes 1st prize with an impressive 68 net points, including two birdies, two strokes ahead of both Stephanie and Barry.

Vickie receives the bag of lollies for taking last place on the list!

Golden Hole

The Tuart Golden Hole jackpot went off in great style!! The jackpot hole has most often been placed on the par 3, 3rd hole however, today was moved to the 18th hole where it was attacked by many a good shot!

Firstly, Maureen in the first group landed her shot well within the length of the flag stick! However, this was bettered by Stephanie in the 5th group. Vickie then stepped up as the last player in group 5 and bettered them both and took away a prize pool of $107.

Vickie claims the Golden Hole . . . . and bag of lollies!

Eagles & Birdies

Congratulations to the 6 players who scored birdies; particularly to Glen who pick up 2 golf balls for scoring on the index 1, hole 2.
