SOS Winter Cup - Round 1

SOS WINTER CUP - ROUND 1

Spare a thought for those playing in real winter conditions !

A recent record of 21 players signed up for the first round of the Winter Cup and enjoyed sublime conditions.  Despite a cool 11 degrees at the start and recent showers initially providing soft conditions and slowish greens, the blue skies, white clouds and a wisp of a breeze provided no excuses for erratic play!

Pre game strategy consumed each players inner thoughts . . . . . . . . .

Brett wins the prize for best dressed closely followed by Earle!

 Quilted jackets were popular today!

Why do balls invariably find the most frustrating place to stop?

WINTER CUP RESULTS - Round 1

Earle's excellent round of 69 allows him to take a 3 stroke lead into the second and final round next week.

Competition for the Cup is wide open, given the week to week fluctuations in scores by many of SOS's finest!

Match-play Quarter Finals

SOS Match-play Quarter Finals

A gusting cold wind and several short showers failed to dampen the spirits of the players as the Match-play quarter finalists set forth ! What were they thinking?

Rob and Paul made a spectacle of themselves as they prepared for the 'tee off'!
There were short odds for Paul but, Rob prevailed 7 / 6 !

Gary and John battled it out to the last but, John was 1 up on the 18th !

Dave and Glen also kept the game alive to the end with Glen persevering 1 Up !!

Greg, known for his relentless consistency, was unable to hold off an 'in form' Earle losing 3 /2.

This leaves the following pairings for the semi final to be held on 17 August 2019 :

and the cool weather fashion stakes turns on a colorful display !

Max about to nail the first of 2 birdies. His 3rd shot pitch from about 100 meters landing conveniently close to the hole on the par 5 Hole 1.

The gusting wind played occasional havoc particularly to those who chose to leave their umbrella up while taking a stroke!
Stephanie was a casualty at the 9th. When preparing to chip onto the green her buggy was flattened and the umbrella worked loose and cartwheeled across the green! Stephanie abandoned the shot and instead sprinted 40 meters in pursuit!

Max on his way to another par having hammered his drive on the 11th hole to the 200m marker
and his second shot just a few meters short of the green.

Gim reports that a duck egg was found on the Hole 15 fairway, apparently recently laid by a Mallard hen duck!!  A pair of confused ducks was seen in the vicinity!

Max and Bernie both came within a meter of winning

 the Golden Hole! Nice work!

The match-play contestants relax  . . . . .

The results of the 4BBB competition was close but Max and Steph produced a 3 point win with the following four groups each one point apart!

WINTER CUP
Next week is the first round of the Winter Cup, a stroke competition on the Old Course. The second and final round of the Winter Cup is held on the following week, 3 August on the Tuart Course.

GOLF TRIVIA

The word golf was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute on forbidden games as gouf, possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning "to strike or cuff". This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat" or "club", and the Dutch sport of the same name.
