CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, ROUND 5

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, ROUND 5

.

On the Tuart again.

One of those on again, off again days. (Jumpers, that is)

.

Some threatening grey skies, a little drizzle, some bursts of sunshine and the odd breeze.

"With the time we've been waiting here,
we could have pitched a tent and had a nap!"

Early in the day, Shelley and Andrew had teed off for their matchplay quarter final. Result later.

A dearth of birthdays, after the plethora of last week.

.

The grass is growing longer under the trees, and the clover is flourishing with all this rain. Meaning that a ball in the trees could disappear quite effectively. (If you find one with a red cross on it on the third, or the sixteenth, it would be nice to have it back. We were quite strict about only three minutes seaching in our group.).

.

Lynne’s group suggested that her hitting a STUD and getting the girls’ longest drive for it on the same hole was something of a unique achievement.

.

Brett managed to gum up proceedings on the seventeenth by failing to find his first drive, going back to hit a second, losing that, returning to the tee to hit five, then discovering an earlier drive and basically having a major stuff up while everyone else stood around twiddling their thumbs.

.

Drue hit into the trees left on the fourteenth, ended up in a huge mess, decided to take an unplayable, two club lengths gave no release, nor did retreating in line with the pin, so elected to return to the tee from where he managed to put the ball into trees right.

.

And Peter managed to hole out with a 12 on the fourth, and was delighted to discover that he could card just a ten for it. Yes, it was one of those days.

.

Were there birdies? Of course there were: Mark Wilson on the 10th, Paul Cooper on the 18th, Brett on both the 5th and 16th (just before his disaster on the 17th) and Goochie on both the 8th and 9th.

.

The matchplay quarter final result, Andrew beat Shelley 3 and 2, having had, we’re led to believe, a couple of amazing chips and putts towards the end of the round. Congratulations, Andrew.

.

So the semi-finals take place next week, Gary v Derek and Keith v Andrew. Remember this bit of pertinent advice:

.

For the next few weeks, we’ll be donating our fines money to the Children’s Medical Research Institute for research into kids born with a birth defect or genetic disease, as well as our chip’s budget - the club has undertaken to match the members’ contribution.

Guess who won the raffle.

And the fines this week totalled $62 - that’s a record, and thank you to the membership for their unparalleled generosity.

.

So, the men’s longest drive on the fourth, picked up by Mark Wilson

The ladies longest drive won by Lynne on the fifth

Nearest the pin in 2 on the tenth - Mark Wilson again

Nearest the pin in 3 on the eleventh, Paul Cooper, trumped by Brett

And nearest the pin on the eighteenth, Gerry, trumped by Paul Cooper, who sank the putt for a birdie.

The results - a real spread, from the sublime to the not very good, but stroke is a great leveller - one bad hole and the round can really unravel.

.

Congratulations to Paul, an excellent result.

.

Next week we’re back on the Old Course, matchplay semis and stableford for the rest.

Match Play Quarterfinals

Another magnificent day for a round of golf at Wembley. This week the Tuart Course was in play with its several water hazards, tricky par 4's and some narrow fairways.

With clear blue skies and little to no wind the 3 pairs of match play quarter-finalists had every opportunity to demonstrate their best game however, as we know, golf play is a fickle business! The remaining pair, comprising Shelley Yeo and Andrew Crevald, will play their match at a later date.

That left the remaining 17 players to enjoy a round of stableford!

The match-players have already teed off leaving
Frances, Greg, Colin, Paul & Andrea at the first tee!

Mind games were inevitably clouding ones judgement at critical points of the match!

Did everyone get in enough practice before the start?

Paul and Keith looking relaxed as they wait on the 3rd tee with Mark Macnish.
Bernie, the 4th member of this group, was teeing off on the white markers!

Gerry's tee shot on the 2nd found its way underneath
a pile of broken branches which took some time to clear!

Andrea takes a pic of Nuria attempting to redirect
her ball from the base of a tree!

The 18th hole with group 2 putting out.
Only 91 metres from the green markers with many, either on purpose
or inadvertently, sneaking their ball past the safe side of the left hand sand bunker!

Hot chips were much welcomed!

Gim and Shelley were last in and made do with the rear table!

President's Message

SOS President, Tony Gooch, welcomed members present and congratulated those with birthdays to celebrate this week!

President, Tony Gooch, wishes Derek a happy birthday for tomorrow
and also to Richard Osborne and Mark Hill for later in the week!

Tony also referred to the email received by SOS members this week from Glen's daughter, Kelly, concerning the tragic loss of their newborn son, Charlie, to a genetic disease and their desire to raise funds for research for preventing birth defects and genetic disease in children. The SOS committee believes the raising of funds for the cause, to be donated to the Children’s Medical Research Institute for research into kids born with a birth defect or a genetic disease, to be something the SOS Group can support. The Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, has outlined the fundraising procedure in 'Captain's Corner' toward the end of this blog.

Congratulations to Derek, Gary and Keith for claiming victory in the match-play quarterfinals.

Captains Corner

Raising Funds for Charlie Big Heart - Kelly & Family (Glen's daughter)

We all have received Kelly’s message about raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute for research into kids born with a birth defect or a genetic disease.  The SOS committee in the name of all SOS group members would like to support the cause so, as of next week, for the next 4 weeks, all Ash Tray fines and also the chips budget will go to the cause and SOS will match the total amount up to a ceiling of $250.

We count on all of you to be generous for the fines and to support it …and if some one wants to buy the chips …you are going to be VERY popular as well !

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, ROUND 4

Just a wonderful day on a beautiful course

The fourth round of the Club Championship. There’ll be seven rounds in all, your final score will be the sum of your best five scores out of the seven, or the sum of the scores for the number of rounds that you have played should you only play less than five. And the Club Champion will be the person with the best gross score, but there’ll be prizes for the best nett scores in A grade and B grade, and that will be determined.....oh, never mind.

.

It was a very nice day. As close to perfect as it can get on a golf course. We welcomed Keith back from the UK, having only arrived on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately his email still doesn’t work properly. He’d welcome a bit of technical support from anyone who knows that stuff.

.

The president thanked everyone for their efforts in cleaning up after the International Night - it had indeed been a lot of fun.

.

Next week is the first knockout round of the Match Play competition. Billed as a semi-final, they are of course, quarter finals, but no matter. The first two groups will be filled by these competitors.

Gerry will be the referee, and his decision will be unerringly final. He will also make the handicaps known on the Saturday morning. Competitors will take a manual card, and an all square result after the eighteenth hole will be determined by playing off again (and again if necessary) on the eighteenth. Other players are asked to prioritise such play-offs.

.

Everyone else will play a Stableford competition. There will, of course, be prizes as usual.

.

The novelties will be available to all.

Gim has a STUD from the tee box

We congratulated Steph and Bernie for their impressive result at Dongara, and we were pleased to note that on unlike one of their previous out of town excursions, this time they were not scolded for making too much noise and talking.

Group One ready for the off

The novelties:

Nearest the pin on the second - the first three groups struggled to even get a ball on the green. Paul Cooper dropped one on from the fourth group, but was beaten by Mark Wilson on one of the last drives of the day.

.

Nearest the pin in two on the tenth - always a nice approach on this hole, very reachable for everyone. Peter the first to get on the marker, followed by Gardy, Don got even closer but Keith got inside that. Not to be outdone, Pugsy from the same group snuck inside Keith’s to take the prize.

Barry puts it all on the three's - obviously the way to go.

.

Nearest in three on the fifth - a tough one? Not so. It may be a high index hole, but Andrea got to the green in three, only to be outdone by Gary who put it in the hole. Amazing? Not to be outdone, Gordon also put it in the hole, to make it two birdies on this very challenging green.

.

The ladies’ longest drive on the eighth - In the first group, Frances put it straight down the middle, only to be bested by Andrea from the same group. And that’s how it stayed.

.

The men’s longest drive on the seventeenth - another lovely straight fairway, Gardy got his name on the maker first, apparently wasn’t the greatest drive, but no-one managed to better it until Steph, self-identifying as a bloke, passed it from the last group. Just to bring a little normalcy back to the proceedings, Gary snuck one past both of them to pick up the prize. (Except he didn’t, he’d left by then, so he’ll pick it up next week.)

Having a great day!

There were half a dozen birdies this week, two of them by Peter Baird, who chipped in from 10, 20, 30, 40 (depends who you ask) metres on the ninth, then added a second with a four on the seventeenth. Pugsy tidied up on the sixth and the eleventh, Gardy and Gordon on the fifth, and Mark Wilson the second.

.
Something to celebrate. An Eagle's behind, perhaps?

The final results: a remarkable change in form for Peter, who you’ll remember, picked up the lollies last week with a very disappointing 87! Whatever he’s having, we’d all like some, please.

Congratulations!
