Captain's Choice

Camo pants for our very own urban guerilla

Well, this was a bit of a rum do.

Apparently we'd been paired up before the game begun, but no knew with whom one was paired, until all was revealed at the end.

No-one else has got balls like mine

At which point, you added up your score and your partner's.

Whose shoes are these? Scroll down to find out.

Probably just as well we didn't know who we were paired with.

Paul's going to try this with Stan after the game next week.

Anyway, it all came out in the end. Sort of. After numerous recounts.

A bit windy, but otherwise a pleasant enough day.
Ah, the wind in our hair. What's left of it.
Malcolm retired hurt.

Don just retired as usual.

We celebrated a couple of birthdays. Frances last week.

Strange, but true..

And Glen today.
After Glen lost control of his equipment and they wrapped around the drinking fountain
And Gary very kindly applied for Glen's senior's card.

Free travel on the bus for when my sporty wheels are in for a service

Frances' first day back, and Roland very generously made sure she didn't come last.

My brother better not beat me, or else..

That's because Roland had a great day fishing during the week, and was feeling very magnanimous.

Which one's the piano tuna?

Since we're here, let's remind ourselves of Rule 28 - Ball Unplayable.

You have, under penalty of one stroke, three options:

a) Play the ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played; or

b) Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the point on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or

c)Drop the ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.

A couple of points worth thinking about here - last week, one of our players (alright, it was Peter) hit a grubby tee shot into the long grass under a bush. Instead of declaring it unplayable, he took a swing at the ball, and fluffed it a couple of inches deeper into the grass. Now, he decided it was unplayable, and went to play again from the tee, under option a). But, because he last played the ball from the spot in the long grass (albeit pretty much a windy), he could no longer return to the tee - the ball was last played from the spot in the grass.

Also, it's worth bearing in mind that if you drop the ball under options a, b or c, and it is still unplayable, you take another penalty, and another drop, and another, and another, until you consider it playable, taking an additional penalty for each drop. This can work out expensive.

But, it's surprising how often we don't consider option a. If you're in a mess,  it's sometimes better to go back to where you played the last shot from, (ie the tee if it's your first shot), but make that call before you try playing it from where it lies, otherwise the position you return to is the unplayable position, as Peter found last week.

And of course, it's entirely up to you whether it's declared unplayable or not.

I'm not entirely sure why I do this, but I've seen Stan do it.

The novelties went to the usual suspects in most cases:
