Irish Stableford on Old

It's that time of year when most of us have to brush up our knowlege of things "IRISH" and search the moth blown areas of our wardrobes for things GREEN!

And so it was as members arrived for the SOS Annual St Patrick's Day game of Irish Stableford.

Glenn Pug Dog Kelly makes a colourful arrival!

Keith, Andrea & Gardi in various shades of greenery!

Carol & Mark H looking for their team members?

Take #1 of the group photo

The weather was pretty good compared with recent months! However, the humidity was unusually high with temperatures in the low 30's, with plenty of cloud cover and the occasional light breeze.

There was a short list of instructions on how to play the game, the first being that each group had to select a name.

Group 1  - The Scarlet Pimpinels (Don, Mark W, Gary)
Group 2  - We Are The Craic*  (Barry, Gardi, Mark S)
Group 3   - Kelley's Heroes  (Gerry, Glenn K, Carol)
Group 4   - Gimmey's    (Greg, Keith, Paul C, Gim)
Group 5   - Póg mo thóin Craic **    (Bernie, Steph, Peter, Karl)
Group 6  -  Galway Hookers   (Mark H, Goochy, Andrea, Brett)

* Craic (/kræk/ KRAK) or crack is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland. It is often used with the definite article – the craic – as in the expression "What's the craic?" (meaning "How are you?" or "What's happening?").

** translated as "kiss my arse"
A humorous Hiberno-English catch-phrase, conveying disrespect or incredulity, also sometimes used to trick foreigners into using a vulgarity!

The 2nd and 3rd instructions involved obtaining a Golf Link card for your handicap and a group card for the team results.  Not all individuals or groups managed to get this right, causing some angst during the course of play and issues convincing the Captain of their results.

The Captain reported that Pug Dog realised after 16 holes of golf the match was set up for the Tuart Course, when we played the Old Course!  Sounds like something got lost in the translation!?

For Group 5, the absence of a group score card meant they also forgot to choose a team name until arriving at the 19th hole! By all accounts, playing in an atmosphere of nameless anonimity Bernie, Steph, Peter & Karl lost some of their team spirit and their scoring suffered accordingly!

"We Are The Craic"
Mark S, Gardi & Barry comprise the 2nd group off the 1st tee!

Take #2 as additional members seize the opportunity!

President, Tony Gooch, announced that Lynley Hunter will be celebrating her birthday next Thursday, 21 March. Also, Keith Barrow celebrated his birthday yesterday, 15 March! Andrea's birthday on 6 March was also acclaimed as she has been absent for several weeks.

Tony also reminded everyone that the SOS 2024 Annual General Meeting will be held next weekend at the Perry Lakes BBQ area.  So, go directly to the AGM venue after completing next week's round.  Food and drink will be provided.

Irish Stableford Results

Team Captain, Gerry Tessier, announced that only 10 points separated first from last with:

The Winners Podium including Team Galway Hookers - Andrea, Brett, Goochy & Mark H
with Bernie (true product of Ireland) and Peter (lucky dip winner).

Individual stableford results are shown below with Paul Cooper taking the honours, closely followed by Don Beasley and Brett Fordham.

Greg narrowly won the bag of lollies, from Gardi and Peter, and did a outstanding job in reading out the list of fines most generously donated by members - a total of $39.75 was raised for the Ash Tray Fund!

The Golden Hole did not go off this round and has increased to $143.  As 'the pot' will pass the $150 mark next week, a 2nd GH will commence on a separate par 3 hole. Details to be advised . . .

Only 2 birdies were scored, which is well down on normal competition days! Don scored on hole 10 while Paul C scored on hole 14.

Novelties

NTP on #2  -  Gim, bettered by Steph.
NTP in 3 on #8 - Gerry outdistanced by Coops.
LD women on #10 - only one . . stiff knees (with cat bite) Andrea!

Costume Contest

The prize for the most original costume of the day was tightly contested, but was awarded to Pug Dog Kelly for his West Coast Fever T-Shirt (green), floral swim shorts and blarny hat - see top of blog for picture!

Others were highly commended, but fell short of the mark!

The Raffle

A total of 48 discs were purchased giving punters a 1 in 8 chance of winning a prize. Not sure who won, but Carol did an excellent job of churning the barrel!

Next Week

We have the Perry Lakes Cup played on the Old Course commencing at 8.44 am.

After completing play, members should go directly to the Perry Lakes BBQ area where the SOS 2024 Annual General meeting will be held.  Food and drinks will be supplied.
