Spring Cup Round 1

The first round of the Spring Cup was played in cool but very pleasant conditions with plenty of sun and white clouds around.

The stroke competition on the Tuart Course was run in combination with the delayed Match Play semi final between Tony Gooch and Barry Treak, the latter arrangement sending several SOS Committee Members and others diving into the R&A Rules book for validation!

News Flash!

SOS Golf Group member, Lynley Hunter is the Yaringa Ladies Golf Club, Hammersley, 'Club Champion for 2022!

The 54 hole (3 rounds) stroke competition was completed on Wednesday 27 July 2022, and Lynley won by 16 strokes!

On the Fairways & Greens

Some tricky footwork from Earle on the 13th hole captured by Pugdog!

Puggy provided this photo of the pitch mark from his 2nd shot on the par 4, 13th hole!
Awesome golf shot!!  However, the details provided with the photo do not let us know where the ball came to rest or, if a birdie was scored!

Mark Hill's tee shot on the 14th hit the left side trees just 50m from the tee, deflected 90°, bounced over the 'ladies' tee and got lost in the long grass! Paul Boquest captured the action and suggests a new movie titled ' Golfers in the Mist'!

Mark checks out the long grass!

Mark emerges from the mist without ball!

Ball finally located and Mark made an excellent recovery shot back onto the fairway!
Unfortunately, Mark's next shot was too well hit and raced across the green
 and plopped into the water!

Presidents' Address

SOS Golf Group President, Brett Fordham, called the meeting to order in decidedly cool conditions as members were seated on the benches outside the Pro Shop. The gusting cold wind, which picked up in the latter stages of the golf round, blew from the north-west and was funnelled between the 300 Acres Restaurant and the Pro Shop!  A large number of free plates of hot chips saved the day!

Brett noted a sheet was being passed around to record members intentions re the Country Cup being played on Sunday, 25 September, at the Araluen Country Club. Members who have not already provided details should email Shelley Yeo advising her 'Yes/No/Maybe'.

Honorary Life Member, Colin Kerr, is shortly checking into hospital for a bit of R&M and Brett, on behalf of all members, wished him well and a speedy recovery!

There were no members birthdays to celebrate this week!

A committee meeting will be held next week, 27 August, after the group meeting.

Results

1. Match Play Semi Finals

With Barry now recovered from his back injury, the delayed semi finals match between Barry Treak  and Tony Gooch could now take place.  After some discussion on the legality of playing a match play game simultaneously with a stroke event, it was agreed it was possible!

Barry was obviously in good form and was able to defeat Goochy 3/2.

In the picture below, Goochy congratulates Barry at hole 16.

Congratulations to the Match Play finalists:

Michael Curtis vs Barry Treak on 10 September 2022.

2. Spring cup - Round 1

Gerry awarded Earle, the most honest player of the day, the bag of lollies and the fines sheet for coming last!

However, congratulations go to Frances Longhurst with a par round of 70, snatching 1st place from Barry Treak in second place on 71 points and, Brett Fordham in 3rd with 72 points.

With the second and final round taking place next Saturday, the top 9 place getters must all be considered potential Spring Cup winners!

Earle Scarff expertly called out the list of fineable events and it seemed all members had one or more transgressions to account for!

Mark Hill was called out for skimming his tee ball on the 18th into the water and having it leap out the other side and into the right bunker. Mark executed a neat sand shot and tapped in for a par!

Treasurer, Shelley Yeo, counts up the raffle and fines monies.

Raffle

The master of the barrel was Puggy, who expertly called out the numbers. And the winner was . . .  Vickie!

Next Week

The second and final round of the Spring Cup will be played on the Old Course. The winner will have scored the lowest aggregate strokes from both round 1 and round 2.

Captains Corner

An unusual situation presented itself today when Tony Gooch and Barry Treak requested SOS's Captain, Gerry Tessier, to allow them to play their deferred match play semi final game at the same time as participating in the Spring Cup stroke play competition.

They explained that Barry's back pain was now fixed and the semi finalists were not able to re-schedule their game for any other time before the final due to work commitments and the like.  Gerry consulted with Derek, the match play referee, and Gerry granted their request.

Some members considered that combining the two games was not possible. However, with assistance from Shelley and Lynne it was determined that no SOS rules prevented the playing of match play and stroke together. In addition, R&A Rule 12 was located which specifically permitted such play, subject to certain conditions.

The Match play Referee and the Club Captain and a very large rule book!

And the answer is found in Rule 12.
