Spring Cup Final

Excellent early spring weather to contest the final round of the Spring Cup. It was cool, a few minor showers, windy gusts at times, but lots of blue skies and white clouds. The galahs, cockatoos and ducks were all very active, with many ducklings trooping after their parents!

As there were only four group bookings allocated to SOS for the day, only 16 players could tee off. Several players heroically gave up their places to allow others, possibly more likely to win the Spring Cup, to participate!

On the Fairways & Greens

Tony Gooch cut a fine figure as he smashed his first ball off the black tee marker, over the tree at the dogs leg and landed in the middle of the fairway only some 160m short of the green!

On the 8th hole, Goochy, Gerry and Peter all found themselves at the top end of the left side bunker with another 120m or so to the pin! Both Goochy and Peter managed to make the green! Meanwhile, Mark S was catching up some hundreds of meters away having hooked his tee ball to the far side of the adjacent fairway!

President's Address

SOS President, Brett Fordham opened the meeting and apologised for the inability to accommodate all those who had wished to play today!

Brett noted that production planning for the 50th anniversary annual dinner and shirts was well underway with the final shirt designs becoming available for review in the coming weeks.

He reminded members that the match play final takes place in 2 weeks time and  will be followed after the game by a BBQ and award ceremony at the Perry Lakes picnic area.

The SOS Committee is meeting this afternoon to address current issues and plans to call a general meeting of members, to coincide with the BBQ event, to address some current issues effecting the SOS Group.

Brett noted that no members had a birthday to celebrate this week!

The Results

Club Captain Gerry Tessier also apologised for today's booking problems. The fact is that SOS has four confirmed groups (16 players) booked each week and often seeks one or more additional groups if a large number of members wish to play.  However, today the golf course was fully booked and it was not possible to accommodate more than 16 players!   Gerry extended a special thanks to Kerry, Vickie and Earle for giving up their places to others.

Spring Cup - Round 2

Congratulations to Peter Baird for winning Round 2 with a net score of 70, narrowly outplaying Gerry Tessier who also scored 70 and Greg Bennett one point behind on 71 points.
However, none of these scores were good enough to win the Spring Cup!

Golden Hole

Yet again, no winner this week so the pot continues to accumulate!

Novelties

Congratulations to the Contenders and Winners of the novelty holes!

Maureen was in the last group and to win the longest drive, had only to keep it on the fairway, as no player before her had managed to do that!

Ash Tray Collection

As Frances and Gary had 'done a runner' it was left to Goochy to call out the fines and accept the bag of lollies for the highest score!

Members dug deep to pay for their errant shots into trees and bunkers, uncouth language, etc. etc.

Shelley assisted in collecting the fines!

Tony accepted the bag of lollies for coming 3rd last!

Raffle

And the winner of last weeks raffle was Lynne Malone!

Can anyone remember who had the winning ball this week??

Next Week

On Saturday, 3 September, the 6th round of the Club Championship competition will be played on the Old Course.  There are a total of 7 rounds in the competition, with each players 5 best rounds added together to determine a final score. Results of the competition, which involve a number of different categories, are announced at the annual dinner.

1. Golf Rules

The following link leads to a video covering 6 often misunderstood golf rules;

2. The Benefits of booking your SOS game early

As the Wembley Golf Course becomes more and more popular there will be increasing pressure on the SOS Booking Officer in securing sufficient places each Saturday for members wishing to play.

SOS has 4 confirmed groups booked each week which accommodates 16 players. If more than 16 players book for a game, the SOS Booking Officer will seek additional groups. However, there is no guarantee that Wembley Golf Course will be able to provide those additional groups if the public, or other golfing clubs, have already received confirmed bookings!

Accordingly, to obtain the best possible chance of a confirmed booking, it is recommended payment of the course fee is made to the Booking officer's (Glen Pope's) bank account as soon as you decide you want to play. The deadline for advising the Booking Officer and paying the course fee is 5.00pm Wednesday.

3. Wembley Golf Course ('WGC') Colored Tee Marker System ('CTMS')

The following is a short review of the origin of the CTMS and how SOS currently applies the system to each member.

On 9 January 2022 WGC introduced the CTMS with a view to speeding up play and making the game more enjoyable.

SOS adopted the system on 9 January 2022 subject to a review at the AGM held on 20 March 2022. At the AGM it was decided to continue using the CTMS and evaluate it after another 3 months.  That subsequent review, in late June 2022, considered many comments that had been received from lady members and others, discussions with WGC management, as well as benchmarking with other ladies groups playing at Wembley. Based on this input, on 3 July 2022, the SOS committee decided to modify the application of the CTMS as follows:

Female members may elect to play from the white tees unless a female member has a preference to play from the green tees, in which case they may elect to do so.  Male members with a handicap of 10 or less should play from the black tees and male members with a handicap of 11 or more should play from the green tees. However, male members with a handicap of 11 or more may elect to use the black tees, but not the white tees.

As it is proposed to have a general discussion on the CTMS at the general meeting on 10 September 2022, members may find this short summary useful.

End  😀

  1. Very nice change, should attract a lot of people to golf practice. My current main product is the golf laser rangefinder, which is currently used by less than 10% of American golfers.
It can be used for good ranging and quickly familiarize yourself with the stadium.
