Summer Cup Final

The final round of the Summer Cup attracted 26 players which included 9 that had not played at last week's Round 1.

That left a field of 17 players eligible to win the Cup.  Now, if you discount those players that scored 76 or more last week, there were only 6 players that had a snowballs chance in hell of scoring well enough in Round 2 to pull off a win!

So, the bets were on Round 1's top 6:

Frances Longhurst

70

Glen Pope

71

Mark Wilson

71

Lynne Malone  *

73

Birgit Reinartz    *

74

Mark Smith

74

* The odds got even better when both Birgit and Lynne pulled out of Round 2 leaving only 3 out of 4 to claim a podium finish!!

The first group away - Gary, Shelley S and Tony

Frances and Richard taking a rest before the start,
with Brett checking his emails at the rear!

Carol, Derek, Greg & Gim all looking confident!

Boris & Keith were in groups 5 & 4 respectively.

Carol, Brett & Gerry
Happy, but probably all out of contention for the Cup!

Group 3 about to tee off
Mark W, Peter, Shelley Y & Gordon

On the Fairways

Only one photo received this week for the blog!  So, not much to report.

Mark W's drive on the 17th went a very long way and ended
at the bottom of  some reticulation WIP!

After the Game

The venue after the game was a quarantined area outside the doors of the restaurant and very nice it was too until a kookaburra decided to divebomb the table to take a chip or two in front of Gordon!

Gordon's quick reflexes disturbed the birds line of flight resulting in it crash landing in the middle of the table and knocking his full glass of icy cold beer onto the floor where the glass shattered into many pieces!!

Attack of the Kookaburra

Who ? ?   Me ! !

Derek and Frances got some of the splatter!

The kookaburra has returned to its roost - see top of picture,
from where it later bombed the canteen counter and made off with a piece of someone's food order!

Restaurant staff clean up the mess and kindly replaced Gordon's glass of beer!!!

Presidential Address

Brett, and those present, congratulated Keith Barrow who celebrates his birthday next Tuesday.

The President calls the meeting to order.

Also some encouraging news on Dave Williamson, who is recovering from a heart attack and surgery and is now back home recuperating. Get well soon Dave . . . we want to see you back on the fairways!

Shelley Skinner has announced her imminent departure to return home to NZ !
Shelley S will be putting on a drinks event before she leaves - see details later in blog.

We also welcome Gordon Gryzb back to play after an extended break.

Brett noted SOS currently has 39 ordinary members which number will drop to 38 after Shelley's departure. So, there is still room for 2 more ordinary members before reaching the maximum number of 40 permitted under the SOS constitution. If the number exceeds 40, the additional members can join as associate members, which have slightly fewer privileges.

Brett apologised for the stuff ups in getting the AGM notice out to members at the first attempt, for which he and the communications officer both stumbled!

Do not forget to attend the AGM at Perry Lakes picnic ground after next weeks game. Subway platters of food, as well as drinks will be served prior to commencement of the formal meeting.

Brett advised next week's game will be Irish Stableford which is a team event, with additional details toward the end of the blog.  Teams will each have a Captain, a team name and a manual team card. Players have the option to used a personal card to record their score.

And now to hand over to SOS Club Captain Gerry Tessier who has the competition results:

The Results

Gerry Tessier announces the scores

Congratulations to Mark Wilson whose two consistent rounds scored 146 points.

Mark Smith was 2nd,  just 1 point behind, also showing great consistency.

Glen Pope came 3rd overall, just 2 points behind the winner!

But special praise to Keith Barrow who won the 2nd round with a net 70 points enabling him to take 4th place overall after posting a score of 80 points in round 1.  A 10 point swing-around between rounds!

Frances Longhurst, who won round 1, also with a score of 70, bombed out with a 2nd round score of 81, relegating her to 5th place, one point behind Keith.

Round 2 placings were Keith Barrow 70 (1st), Mitchel Smith 71 (2nd) and Mark Smith 73(3rd)

Mark Wilson holds the Summer Cup for the next year!

Gerry had a lot of scores to read out!

The Winners Podium
Mark Smith 2rd (overall) and Mitchell Smith 2nd (2nd round) with Gerry Tessier
Mark Wilson with Summer Cup Trophy and Keith Barrow, todays winner and 4th overall.

3rd place overall
Glen Pope

Golden Hole

The Golden Hole was on the par 3, 16th. With the pin placed at the very front of the green, it should have been a piece of cake for someone to claim the pot of gold! But, not to be!

The pot was won last time the Old Course was played, so only some $23 rolls over to the next time.

Novelties

The winners need little introduction as nearly all appeared on the podium!

The Ash Tray Collection

Keith gallantly took over the responsibility for calling out the fines from Carol who bottomed out with a score of 93!
There was much finger pointing to those that had 4 putted, lost their ball(s) and found themselves on adjacent fairways!

Keith calls while Gordon points!

All for a good cause!

The Raffle

Chaos reigned while four members tried to run the raffle!

First ball out was '12' which should have been the winner however, two people claimed the prize each with a '12' disc?? How did this happen?  Each was given a ball and the first prize drawn again.

This time we have a winner - Boris!

The prize - a $20 Lot Six Zero gift voucher!

Next Week

A Irish Stableford competition on the Old Course is scheduled for Saturday, 19 March, commencing at 8.34 am.

Message from Shelly Skinner

Is it Australian, or is it originally NZ?  The list keeps mounting…

  • Phar Lap
  • The Pav
  • Lamingtons
  • Crowded House
  • Dragon
  • Rebecca Gibney
  • Keith Urban
  • Russell Crowe
  • Quade Cooper
  • Stephanie Jeffares
  • Even the humble ANZAC biscuit isn’t immune to such blasphemous claims.

Then there’s the almighty of all - the underarm bowl …

Come and debate it all at Shelley2’s farewell from SOS on Saturday, 26 March.  She’s even stretching to a modest bar tab

Following the post game formalities, hang around, chew the fat and say Haere Ra, farewell.  ðŸ˜‚

All you SOS’s out there are welcome.

Reminder

SOS Breakfast Club's first event is scheduled for 9.00 am March 27, at Glen's restaurant Lot Six Zero, Subiaco - please confirm to Birgit before March 24.

Captains Corner

The Irish Stableford competition celebrates all things Irish, but particularly St Patrick's Day (Lá Fhéile Pádraig) which is Ireland's national holiday which falls on Thursday 17 March.

People hold parades and festivals to celebrate Irish culture on the day.

To join in the celebrations wear anything Green next Saturday!
