BennKerr Cup Round 1

An historic day for SOS Golf Group saw the SOS membership split between those of convict blood versus those born somewhere else!  It was Australia vs Rest of the World (ROW - 'The Red Team') playing a 4BBB stableford on the Tuart Course.

The BennKerr Cup is to honour SOS's two longest serving playing members, Greg Bennett and Colin Kerr, who were foundation members back in 1972. The Cup will be contested each year over two rounds with the team scoring the most points being declared the winner!

The weather was near perfect, slightly overcast with occasional patches of blue sky, with a gentle breeze sufficient to carry the ball into the rough for those unable to control those long shots!

From across the ditch and further afield the Red Team
had many facets!

On the course

Birgit's buggy adorned with the colours of Germany

For some reason many players found their way forward impeded by the ball's proximity to a tree, shrub or other hazard!

Tony Gooch considers his options!

Ivar's tee shot on hole 1 went too far right!

Frances considers a drop!

But opts for a two club shot!?!

Peter's ball hugged the tree base and led to a windy followed
by a backward hack onto the fairway as he inched toward the 7th green.
Ian Holmes watches the carnage unfold!

As Stephanie neared the 15th green she first sent her buggy careering toward the sand trap and, after a frantic chase, managed to straighten it up for a relaunch down the slope where it collided with Glen's remote controlled MGI, tipping her buggy over!
Glen seen here righting Stephanie's buggy as she watches from afar!

The Clubhouse

Members feasted on hot chips as the trailing groups made their way back to the clubhouse.

SOS President Brett Fordham welcomed everyone present including guest Ivar Holmes and congratulated Frances Longhurst and Barry Treak who both celebrate their birthdays on 24 October.

Brett noted the final round of the BennKerr Cup will be played next week and is to be followed by a BBQ Sausage Sizzle at the Perry Lakes BBQ area.

Brett address the players.

Greg, Colin, Glen & Stephanie listen to Brett's speech!

Malcolm Yeo

Shelley Yeo advised members that Malcolm would no longer be accompanying her while she played golf as he had recently been admitted as a resident of the Koh-I-Noor aged care facility in Pangbourne Street, Wembley. Many of us will have fond memories of playing golf with Malcolm of the last decade or so and will miss his company.

The Results

Congratulations to Shelley Yeo for winning the day with 40 stableford points with Mark Wilson 4 strokes back and Brett 1 more, but including 3 birdies.

The BennKerr Cup - Round 1

Team Australia scored 32 points against ROW's 23 points, giving it a 9 point margin to carry into the final round next week!! Can the Red Team recover the gap?? Perhaps Gerry's suggestion to hold a 5.00 am practice session might make a difference?

Captain's Rules Corner

Another 6 pearls of wisdom to assist members to quickly apply the rules during play.

Golden Hole

Congratulations to Shelley Yeo for nailing the Golden Hole on the 6th hole by driving her tee shot to within the length of the flag stick.

Many try, but few succeed!

Ash Tray Collection

Tony James shows off a Minty from the bag of lollies for claiming the lowest score.

A cascade of coins hit the fines tin as members, sometimes reluctantly, paid for their poor play or, in Stephanies case, loss of control of equipment!

Club funds were used to feed us with chips
 after the tough competition!

Best Dressed Awards

While Frances got a 'highly commended', Earle's colourful ensemble won for Team Australia and Bernie scored for the ROW with her Irish attire and hat!

The Raffle

The raffle discs had been sold out before the last two groups got into the clubhouse requiring some bargaining to have those with many to share them around.

Birgit proudly shows off the spoils for chancing on the winning number!

Birgit wins the raffle's 1st prize!

Glenn scored a raffle ball!

Next Week - BennKerr Cup Round 2

Round 2 will be an American Foursome played on the Old Course to be followed by a BBQ and trophy presentation at Perry Lakes.

American Foursomes:

Both players play tee shots at each hole, then play a second with their partners ball. One ball is then selected and then play proceeds as in foursomes with the owner of the ball selected then playing the third shot. Handicap allowance is 50% of combined handicaps.

Please confirm, as soon as possible, your availability for round 2 to Glen to assist organisation.

Gerry explains next week's game format.

End . . . .  😎 ⚒ 🎯
