Winter Cup Round 1

The 1st Round for the Winter Cup attracted a field of 21 SOS Golf members to the Old Course to compete in the first of 2 rounds of the stroke competition.

As the first group teed up at 8.55 am, a quick look at the BOM radar showed the potential for intermittent showers, but no sign of the deluges experienced earlier in the week!

The Game

The playing conditions were generally excellent. One short shower during the round brought out the umbrellas and buggy covers.  There was much evidence of the torrential rain that came down during the week causing washouts and lines of flotsam in bunkers and depressions. However, the greens were well drained and yielded some excellent long putts!

A pair of ducks on the tee as Glen prepares his first shot!

Gerry takes a picture of Peter using his range finder
as he stands atop the 7th hole 150m marker!?

About 140m further uphill, Gerry uses his remote control to steer his buggy off the top face of the green-side bunker! Crushed umbrella in the foreground shows where buggy landed!  Distracted??

President's Address

SOS Golf Group president, Brett Fordham, welcomed members and guests to the post match sausage sizzle at the Perry Lakes reserve and thanked Carol Barrow, Shelley, Maureen and others who had organised the excellent food and drinks!

Carol and Shelley catering wizards!

Brett reminded everyone that the International Night is being held on Saturday evening, 24 July, and that Glen has kindly offered us his premises at LOT SIX ZERO (corner of Station and Hood St) Subiaco, starting at 7pm.  Partners are invited and arrangements are being organised by Carol.

The Results

Congratulations to Gary, Glen and Greg for taking the podium positions. The lowest aggregate score from this and next week's rounds will claim the Winter Cup!

Birdies & Eagles

Only 4 birdies this week and not an eagle in sight.
No doubt there were numerous 'near misses'!

Holes in 1

News from overseas advises Paul Gardner has joined the multiple 'Hole in 1" club with another ace in the UK! However, as Paul left SOS to return to his roots some months ago, it does not count!

Paul's latest hole-in-one was on the 5th hole of the Montgomery Course at Celtic Manor (Ryder Cup 2010)

Paul celebrates his ace!

Novelties

It was perhaps inevitable that not one player managed to hit a par 3 green in 1 stroke! It happened on hole 13, a par 3 of some 140 m uphill!

Congratulations to the other winners, particularly to Brett for featuring in all three scoring holes.

Golden Hole

The Old Course Golden Hole was claimed for the second week in a row!
While Maureen claimed the $343 prize last week, Glenn Kelly's prize this week was only around $20.

Glenn Kelly claims the Golden hole!
He looks pleased!

Sadly his birdie putt finished further away. Such is the way of golf!

Ash Tray Collection

There were many fines levied for all manner of abnormal golf strokes, loss in control of equipment, with Tony James gallantly taking on the roll of 'fine master'!

It did not rain on the sausage sizzle!

Next Week

The second and final round of the Winter Cup competition will be held on the Tuart Course on 17 July.
Frances Longhurst won the Winter Cup in 2020 and will, no doubt, bring it next week!

Golf Humor

A man got on a bus, with both of his front pant pockets full of golf balls, and sat down next to a beautiful blonde.

The blonde kept looking quizzically at him and his obviously bulging pants.

Finally, after many such glances from her, he said, “Its golf balls.”

The blond looked at him compassionately and said, “Oh you poor thing. I bet that hurts a whole lot worse than tennis elbow?”

End !
