Match Play - Round 2

The Old Course was the venue for the 2nd Round of the SOS Match Play competition with 22 players registering for the challenge. The earlier forecast for 2-6 mm of rain failed to reach the coastal suburbs resulting in magnificent golfing weather while the Rottnest Island Quokka population received a few showers!

With very little wind, lots of large white clouds and plenty of blue sky, there were no excuses for not playing well however, as is the nature of golf, there were plenty of good, bad and ugly shots as the groups meandered from tee to green.

Recent heavy rains over the last several weeks had caused considerable damage to the tees and the efforts of ground staff to re-seed damaged areas had resulted in many bizarre tee marker placements!

Many tees had the men's and ladies tees virtually on top of each other, while others were exceedingly far apart! On hole 4, the men's tee was in front of the ladies tee!?

Gerry making his drive on the 1st tee !
The tee was so far back very few made it to the dogs leg at the bottom of the hill!

Maureen and Gerry were the first matched pair!

Stephanie & Ian were one of the last matched pairs to start.

Frances, Carol, Derek & Greg soaked up the morning sun!

Tony James & Darren Headley ready to start the round.

The Game

Newsworthy tales of brilliant shots and catastrophic meltdowns failed to surface after the game so the blog is unable to report on the cut and thrust of play. However, there were a number of very close contests and several draws.

Tony G and Birgit still smiling after 18 holes!

Many can relate to the highs and lows of  today's game!

NB: Glen Pope was unable to play due to injury. Match to be rescheduled.

For future reference, match play pairs should follow these guidelines in respect to handicap calculations:

1.    Handicap - if possible, both players should go together to the Wembley Pro Shop registration station and punch in their Golf Australia membership number to see what their current handicap rating is.  Insert the handicap number of each player on the playing card so as to avoid any doubt.

2    Where the pairing consists of a male and female, the index to be used will be determined by the player with the higher handicap. For example, Maureen is paired to play against Gerry. Their handicaps are 12 & 19 respectively. As Gerry receives 7 strokes from Maureen, the men's index is used.

Golden Hole

Yet again, no-one came within distance to win the hole 16 jackpot which now totals $320.
Do not be surprised if hole 2 is selected next time the Old Course is played!

Raffle

Fist prize was collected by Derek who wins a $10 note and a scratchie of potential high value!

An earnest post game discussion!

Ash Tray Fund

Peter Baird, having suffered a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Gary, won the honor to read out the list of fine-able acts.  Peter received no lollies for this task! A few lost balls, many trees to fairways and even a 'missed the unmissable putt' contributed to the haul.

Ian, Tony & Derek listen to the reading of the list of fines !

Next Week

You will recall that the 3rd round of the Club Championship had been scheduled for 29 May however, was cancelled due to severe weather.
Next week's game was to be the 4th round but will now be played as the 3rd round. This is a stroke event.

The 4th round will be rescheduled to 24 July replacing the 'American 4 Some' event that had been scheduled.
