Match Play Final

The day the Match Play Champion is decided, while the rest of the pack contest a stableford competition!

Derek won the toss and was first to tee off on the Old Course, followed by Keith, then the match referee, Shelley Yeo.

Keith on the downswing as Derek and Shelley look on!

Far less stress for the rest of the players who were to compete in a stableford competition.

The 3rd group to tee off were Barry, Francis, Carol & Glen
 . . . .  all looking very relaxed!

President's Address

SOS President, Tony Gooch, opened the post match meeting by welcoming guest player Karl Wolzac.

There were no birthdays last week but two early next week. Congratulations to SOS Club Captain Gerry Tessier for Tuesday 4th September and also to Michael Curtis for Wednesday 5th September.

Donation to Children’s Medical Research Institute

Tony advised that SOS members had raised a total of $700 over the last several weeks for the Jeans for Genes charity event and thanked everyone for their generous support!

Match Play Results

The match play competition was won by Keith Barrow who was 3 up with 2 to play.

It was a close contest with neither player getting more than one up for the first 14 holes! Keith's birdie on the 15th helped him get over the line. Keith took his very best golf to Derek and would have scored a net 69 (3 under his handicap) had he played with the rest of the club! The game was played in good SOS spirits.

Match Play Auction Results

Back on 7 July Barry successfully bid for Keith to win the match play competition and Frances backed Derek!  The total auction proceeds for all 8 match play finalists was $885 and was rounded up by $115 to $1,000 by SOS.

Barry received 80% of the pool and Frances 20%. Both were smiling as the result of the competition was announced and Barry was shouting free drinks to all!!

Golden Hole & Novelties

The pot for the Golden Hole #1 was $150 (16th hole) and $33 for the Golden Hole #2 (2nd hole).
In a comedy of confusion, caused in the main by the absence of Novelty Supervisor Andrea) the Treasurer was informed that GH #2 (might have been the second golden hole?) had gone off and Paul was promptly awarded $33. Some time later Paul queried the prize amount and the error was corrected!

Paul C takes out the Golden Hole on the 16th and pockets $150!

Wooops! . . if anyone has a record of the novelty results, please forward the details to the guest blogger (Peter) who will amend this blog!

Stableford Competition

It was a close contest with only 3 points separating the top 6 positions!
Conditions were cool and windy but otherwise very favourable with the umbrellas going up for only several minutes toward the end of the game.

And the winner of the stableford competition with a respectable 36 points off a 10 handicap is Glen Pope.

Congratulations Glen!

It was good to see Drue O'Donoghue, who also scored 36 points, place 2nd on a count back, for his first time on the SOS podium.

No less than 4 players scored 34 points with Greg Bennett securing 3rd place on the count back!

Greg (3rd) and Drue (2nd)

Birdies

Derek and Keith both scored birdies on the par 3, 6th hole with Keith also scoring on the 15th!
Only 3 other birdies - Garry (4th), Brett (11th) and Glen P (18th).

Match Play Auction Proc

Raffle

None other than President Tony  won the raffle and received a Lot Six Zero $20 gift voucher!

Next Week

Par Plus will be played next week on the Old Course with the first group teeing off around 8.20 am. Shelley will issue the rules with next week's fixtures list.

Beware the bear!

In other parts of the world the hazard is bears.

In Australia it is snakes and kookaburras!

Captain's Corner

In the absence of Captain Gerry Tessier, who is overseas, a timely 'blast from the past' is offered from the SOS blog archives.

  • Subject:  Remote controlled buggy hazards.
  • Event:     Accidental activation of remote control
  • Result:  Buggy takes off without owners knowledge, travels several hundred metres and falls into dam.

This actually occurred several years ago now when the owner was 'putting out' on the 9th green of the Tuart Course! The weather was wet and windy!
