Match Play Final

Spring weather has arrived!!  A beautiful clear day with warm winds and plenty of sunshine.

A perfect day to hold the 2022 Match Play final between Michael Curtis and Barry Treak while the remaining 22 players contested a 2-person blind draw stableford handicap event.

THE MATCH PLAY FINALISTS
Barry Treak vs Michael Curtis

The Match Play final

The first group to tee off contained the match play finalists as well as Club Captain, Gerry Tessier and finals referee, Derek Longhurst.

The Match Play Group

Barry tee'd off first and made a reasonable start sending his ball down the left side of the fairway, short of the dogs leg. Michael on the other hand, had a touch of nerves and topped his ball which hopped about 10 metres forward and stopped short of the white tee markers! Surely an SOS 'first'?

On the Fairways & Greens

While it was an ignominious start for Michael, by the end of  the first 9 holes they were 'all square' !

Match play in progress on the 6th.
(Taken by Birgit on the 4th)

Meanwhile, Peter's 2nd shot on the 8th stopped right under the bunker lip! A highly lofted lob wedge got the ball out of the bunker and a few metres toward the green.

Players will have noticed that ground staff had recently excavated most, if not all, of the bunker edges making it impossible to putt out of the bunkers!

Andrea, Vickie & Frances take a banana break during their round!

Match play update !
Barry's ball gets snookered after deviating from the fairway on the 13th!

A Blond moment?

The picture below shows Frances' buggy left abandoned at the end of hole 7 after she accepted a lift in Vickie's buggy uphill to the 8th hole tee area. After teeing off Vickie and Frances got back into the buggy and were so pre-occupied chatting away that the two motored down the fairway to play their next shots.  Fortunately,  Andrea and Birgit, who had walked back to collect their buggies, alerted the duo in the cart and Frances was reunited with her clubs!

Match Play update

The match play winner was decided after the 16th hole when the referee declared a result of 3 up with 2 to go!!

President's Address at the Perry Lakes Picnic Venue

President Brett Fordham welcomed members and guests to the post-match event noting the awards ceremony and regular events would be followed by a General Meeting of Members of the SOS Golf Group Inc. covering the business set out in the Notice to Members.

Brett advised there are no members birthdays to celebrate this week, although Vickie's was on Friday, 9th September, which I mentioned last week!

Next week, 17 September, will be the final round of the Club Championship contest; a stableford event played on the Tuart Course. The followed week is the Country Cup event on Sunday 25 September at the Araluan Country Resort! If you have not already done so, please complete your booking with Tony Gooch and remit funds to the SOS bank account.

A warm welcome to guest Ron Hill who is a member of the Cottesloe Golf Club and enjoys a handicap of 12.

It is good to see member Greg Dunkeld joining us today after an absence.

And a big 'thank you' to Carol and Frances and others for organising the BBQ and picnic including buns, salads and a refreshing range of drinks!  Always very much appreciated!

Golden Hole

No winner on the Tuart Course today, so the jackpot takes another leap to a total of $141.

New Rules for Golden Holes

Most SOS members are aware that the General Meeting held on 10 September 2022 agreed that, in future, the Golden Hole at each of the Tuart and Old Courses would accumulate to a maximum of $150 on each course.
It was also agreed that if the Jackpot exceeds $150 on either course, a second Golden Hole will be created to hold the 2nd Jackpot funds that exceed $150. In this situation, members will have 2 Golden Holes to contest during the golf round!

For your information, as at 10 September 2022 the Golden Hole jackpot status was:

Tuart Course -  $141 (so, $9 from the next round, on 17 September, will cap off the Jackpot at $150 with the remainder applied to the 2nd Golden Hole.)

Old Course -  $177  ($27 will immediately be applied to the 2nd Golden Hole leaving the original Golden Hole with a sum of $150. The Old Course will next used on 1 October.

Ash Tray Collection

Derek Longhurst took the honor of calling the fines, and the winning the bag of lollies, for coming close to the bottom of the results list! Money poured into the collection boxes as almost all players had a tale of woe. Balls were sunk & otherwise lost, equipment abandoned & abused, profanity filled the air etc. etc.

Raffle

Many players used the tranquil setting to buy up unusually large quantities of numbered disks, so much so there were none left for the 'tail-enders' to buy!

And the winner was Ron Hill!

Ron Hill wins 1st prize in the raffle and
scores a $20 Lot Six Zero gift card!

Results of General Meeting

A total of 23 members signed the attendance register and President Brett Fordham chaired the meeting  which commenced at 3.08pm.

There were 2 ordinary resolutions.

The one dealing with the rules for the conduct of the Benkerr Cup was passed by a majority after some modifications. The precise wording will be provided to members in the short term.

The resolution to prevent the winner of the Masters Trophy from also winning the Memorial Trophy was defeated, so there is no change required to the SOS By Laws.

There were two items for discussion.

After vigorous discussion, it was agreed to 'cap' the Golden Hole jackpot amounts at $150 with any amounts collected in excess of $150 being used to create a second Golden Hole fund.  Please refer to the 'Golden Hole' caption earlier in this blog for a more detailed explanation.

In respect to the issue of the 3 coloured tee markers at Wembley, it was agreed that all men should play off the Green tees and all women should play off the White tees.

The President closed the General Meeting at 3.47pm.
