WA Week Trophy

Clear blue skies welcomed 25 SOS members to contest for the WA Week Trophy on the Old Course.

THE WA WEEK TROPHY

Previous winners include Colin Kerr in 1985,
Ian Holmes in 2020 and Lynne Malone in 2021!

Guests, Bruce and Sebastian Cullerton and Tim Kerin, increased the numbers to 28.

It was still pretty chilly as the first of the 7 groups set off around 9.30am, but the sun was out and, provided you kept out of the shadows, the conditions were perfect for golf.

Gerry, Brett, Gary & Colin at the 1st tee

Frances, Barry & Mitchell sunning themselves on the wall!

Glen applies war paint to his ball!

Puggy has his thumb up as he prepares
to be the 1st to tee off!

Birgit, looking confident, also in the 1st group!

Birgit had a swim before the game (13c unheated!!!)
as part of her pre-game warm-up, with Gerry on duty as lifeguard!!

Match Play Coin Toss

As mentioned several weeks ago, there was a tie for 6th and 7th positions in the list of the 8 Match Play quarter finalists.  Under the SOS By Laws, the tie has to be decided by a toss of a coin!

SOS President Brett Fordham tosses the coin and the winner, taking 6th place is Gerry Tessier with Colin Kerr relegated to 7th position.

The draw for the quarter final competition can now proceed and will be announced shortly.

Greens & Fairways

The greens appeared to be fairly fast despite having been 'spiked' very recently!

Birgit's Kookaburra driver sock with 2 chicks on the wall at the first tee!?

With his back facing the 6th green, Peter uses an open 7 iron
to chip his 'tree'd' ball back toward the tee!!

Peter rights his buggy which had flipped backwards while under remote control while approaching the 7th green!

Birgit points to the rope stake which mercifully deflected her ball toward the 10th hole pin!!

Puggy, in the first group, gets to mark his longest drive on the 11th hole!
No-one was able to match it on the day!

Birgit tracks her tee shot on the 14th.

Mission accomplished - middle of fairway(again)!

Post Game

Plenty of refreshments needed as the groups arrive for the post game activities. Free chips too!

Frances and Bernie with some dark ale!

Club Captain's Address

As SOS President, Brett Fordham, had left early to watch the Rugby International at the Optus Stadium, Captain Gerry Tessier took the floor and brought the meeting to order!

Gerry welcomed guests Bruce and Sebastian Cullerton and Tim Kerin, noting that young Sebastian had fired a round of 101 off the stick, an exceptional score for his age!

Birthdays are celebrated this week by Don Beesley, Dave Williamson and Tony Gooch.  Your fellow SOS members wish you all the best and lower handicaps!

Playing Fees
Wembley Golf has advised that the cost of a round is increasing by $1 to $50.  However, the SOS Committee has decided to keep the weekly fee to $49, including the golden hole, and for SOS to absorb the difference. This has been made possible by higher than predicted weekly playing numbers which also increases receipts from the raffle and Ash Tray collections.

Today's Results

Congratulations to Mitchell Smith for claiming 1st place and the SOS WA Week Trophy by scoring 39 points and 2 birdies!

Greg Bennett claimed 2nd place with 38 points.

And Glenn Kelly was 3rd in a 3 way tie on 36 points.

Claiming a life-time best stableford score, Birgit Reinartz scored a magnificent 36 points and 4th place, showing an early morning swim and support from her Kookaburra makes all the difference!

Ash Tray Fund

Gordon, who had the misfortune to lose out to Gerry in a tie break for last place, did an excellent job in clearly calling out the list of fines.
There were plenty of players and nearly all had multiple reasons to keep the coins flowing into the SOS collection boxes!

Gordon reads the list of fines supported by collectors Gerry and Mitch.

Glenn rolled the barrel and announced the numbers  . . . and the winner was Mitchell!!

Next Week

On 9 July, the first of two rounds will be played to decide the winner of the Winter Cup.

The competition is a stroke event and will be played on the Old Course.

The second round is played the following week, 16 July, on the Tuart Course.

Captains Corner

Tees - Black, Green or White?

After 3 months of using the 3 Tee system and receiving feedback from members, it has been agreed that:
  1. All women members may use the white markers but, if desired, can elect to use the green markers. The choice of tee marker colour is part of the log-in process to obtain a playing card and your handicap is adjusted automatically based on your selection.
  2. For men, members with a handicap on the day of 10 or less will play from the black markers. Men with handicaps above 10 will play off the green markers.
  3. These measures are designed to make the competition for daily prizes and trophies fair to all players.  The competition results will be reviewed and, if required, changes considered.

Match Play

A special tanks to Mark Wilson who, after finishing 2nd after the three qualifying rounds, has volunteered to withdraw from the competition as he will be overseas when the semi-final is played!
Great sportsmanship!  The quarterfinal draw will be released shortly.

For players not participating in the match play quarter and semi finals and the finals, other competitions, other than stableford, are being organised and will be announced shortly.

Breakfast at Lot Six Zero

Another successful Sunday breakfast was enjoyed by a large number of SOS members and partners on Sunday morning, 3 July.

Many thanks to Lot Six Zero, Innaloo and hosts Glen & Lindsey for serving up sumptuous meals. Also thanks to Birgit and others for organising the event!

Many good discussions were had and much fun!
