Fellowship Day Trophy

The autumn weather was perfect for the annual competition between a selection of SOS's best and members of the Western Australian Blind & Vision Impaired Golfers Association. A field of 7 players from each club were paired up to contest a stableford competition on the Old Course.

Due to the extended COVID-19 lock-down period mid last year the 2020 contest was unable to be held.

The 2021 event was originally planned for mid April 2021, only to abandoned when an unexpected 7 day lock-down closed the Wembley Course!  Committee members from both teams worked hard to reschedule the event for 8 May to be followed by a presentation ceremony and BBQ at the Perry Lakes reserve.

SOS President, Brett Fordham, and Social Organiser, Tony James, interrupted their fishing trip in the north-west of the state to send their apologies for being unable to participate in the event!

Group 1

The Fellowship Day Trophy

It may come as a surprise to some, but the Fellowship Day trophy had been missing since about 2014!

The good news is that, last week, after an exchange of several thousand emails between past and present committee members and some heroic search efforts, including into the dark recesses of a former SOS President's red-back infested garage, it has been found. The last engraving on the burl wood plaque was for the year 2013, making it almost an antiquity!

SOS Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, with the recovered trophy.

To fill in the gaps, SOS archive specialists, Derek Longhurst and Greg Bennett searched previous blogs and came up with the following historic results:

2020 Not held
2019 SOS winners 6:3
2018 SOS winners 5:2
2017 WABGA 3:2
2016 SOS 4:1
2015 WABGA 3:1
2014 SOS  229 : 224
2013 SOS 140 : 139
2012  ?
2011  ? weather?
2010  SOS
2009 WABGA
2008 WABGA
2007 SOS

Which brings us to the 2021 results which was a 5:2 win for SOS!

Golden Hole

No one got close to the pin on the par 3, 16th hole, so the jackpot rolls over to next week when the second round of the Club Championship will be played on the Old Course.

Birthdays

Congratulations to Richard Yeo who celebrated his birthday on 3 May.
There are 4 other members who have birthdays later in May!

Derek, Dave, Ian and Tony guard the cooked sausages while they keep hot on the BBQ.

Unusually, not a kookaburra in sight to dive bomb the unsuspecting with food in their hands!
There must have been a cull!

Award Ceremony

After the BBQ, a presentation ceremony was held which included speeches by Gerry Tessier, as Club Captain of SOS and Ron Anderson as President of the Western Australian Blind & Vision Impaired Golf Association.  Both agreed the event had been a great success!

While Gerry Tessier accepted the Fellowship Day Trophy on behalf of SOS for 2021, Ron Anderson's speech provided the SOS members with an informed account of the origins of blind golfing in Australia and how events such as this provide their members with a challenge and sense of enjoyment on the course. Ron also gave thanks on behalf of his association for the donation by SOS of $400 which will assist in meeting the association's objectives.

The 2nd Round of the Club Championship will be held on the Old Course on 15 May 2021.

Treasurer's Dilemma

The money jars are missing!!

Treasurer, Shelley Yeo, has been unable to locate the two money jars used to collect Saturday's Golden Hole and Eagles Nest monies!  Can anyone recall what happened to them as the last several groups teed off at the start? The money jars are normally left on the table outside the Pro Shop to accommodate late arrivals, and then picked up by someone in the last group or two.

Fortunately SOS will not have to file for insolvency if they cannot be found as the maximum monies presently lost are in the order of $20.50.
