Match Play Quarter Final

The weather forecast was benign, and so it was !  Even nicer than last week as the wind was almost non existent throughout the day!

Warm and sunny! What could be better to draw out the best in members' golf skills?

A perfect day for the quarter finals of the 2020 Match Play competition on the Old Course while other club members enjoyed a friendly stableford competition.

Derek, Brett & Ian all looking confident
at the 1st tee of the Old Course!

Earle & Paul obscuring the 1st tee markers
which were set back as far as was possible!

It is never too late to practice !

Max, Tony, Steph & Frances with a backdrop of clear blue skies!

First off the blocks were Shelley v Peter accompanied by Gary, as referee, and Malcolm.
Group 2 included two matches, Bernie v Kerry and Tony v Greg.
In the third group, Brett was matched against Stephanie accompanied by Don and Max.
Another 3 groups then followed, all playing stableford.

Peter was first to tee off, somewhat daunted by the location of the markers
which was as close to the Pro Shop as could be!!

The competition for the match play champion was now at a serious stage and, fortunately, no sledging or unsportsmanlike conduct was reported, which was just as well, as the some committee members had already been involved in rules interpretations during the week!

Not to say there was a little casual banter from time to time!

There were many fine shots played on the day with Gary and Tony both birdying the index 1 hole!
It is not often these holes go off, but two in one day is a RARE EVENT!

For those wishing to achieve the same result, it took Gary two consecutive 3 wood shots, to within 2 metres of the flag stick, and a single putt into the hole!  He also got a birdie on hole 12.

And to think that I was about to give him a 'pick up'!

 The Post Match Session

SOS Captain, Gary Burgess took the floor in the absence of President Brett, who apologised for having to leave early!

Bernie and Steff compare notes on their semi final results
as they prepare the raffle ball machine for action.

 Birthdays

Congratulations to Richard Osborne, who had to pass up golf today in order to play hockey, so could not be applauded for celebrating his birthday on 27 July.

The Results

SOS Captain Gary Burgess takes out 1st prize for the
Stableford Competition, which included 2 birdies,
Glen takes 2nd place with 38 points on a count-back.

Paul would have been 2nd outright if he had hit one less shot - but was reasonably
happy to settle for 3rd on a count-back!
