Benkerr Cup Round 1

Round 1 of the second annual Benkerr Cup contest was held in beautiful conditions on the Tuart Course. The 7.34 am start was the earliest yet this season, but the skies were blue and temperature quite reasonable as 22 members and two guests, Nuria Smith and Paul Cooper, lined up on the first tee.

In many cases it was easy to pick out those on the Aussie team and those, born overseas, comprising the Rest of the World (ROW). However, some contestants seemed to be in their normal weekend attire!

Here is a summary of the 'best dressed':

Lynne & Lynley win 'best dressed' for their distinctly
Aussie attire which included clothes, hats, pins, flag and streamers!

Pro Shop Equipment Malfunction

SOS Captain Gerry Tessier had a harrowing start to the day as the Pro Shop scorecard printer did not work, therefore Gerry started checking the individual daily handicaps online. When he was almost done one of the Pro Shop staff came out and told us the machine was now working . . .  lots of stress for the Captain before the start of the competition!

Mitchell considers his choice of clubs!

Mitchell drove his ball so far on the 8th it landed on the
edge of the left side bunker! That is a long drive!!

plays with feet in the bunker!

Golf is a cruel game at times!
Mitchell gets close to the green but finds his ball directly under the net!

Lynley and Lynne on the 1st tee!
Lynley won a recent mid week competition at
Maylands, so should be in top form today!

The Results

Benkerr Cup

It was victory for ROW in the first round of the 2022 Benkerr Cup beating the Aussies by 3 points - 29 to 26.

It was a very closely fought contest with only 5 points separating the team scores first from last!

Colin Kerr & Greg Bennett - before the result!

Will the 3 point lead be enough for the ROW team to claim overall victory at next week's final round?

Novelties

The Novelty events nearly did not happen as SOS Vice Captain, and keeper of the novelty markers, Tony Gooch was not playing and the markers were nowhere to be found.

Earle quickly remedied the issue by producing some very ad hoc 'markers' which were affixed to the turf by tees!

Congratulations to the winners who outperformed the pack!

Eagles & Birdies

No eagles however, 10 birdies were scored including 3 on the downhill par 5, 15th hole. The calm conditions with a moderate breeze from the south west may have helped!

Ash Tray Fund

Carol graciously accepted the bag of lollies by scoring the least number of points in the individual competition. However, Carol was not feeling too well and, in a great show of dedication to the ROW team, she turned up for the round and partnered with Barry to score 38 which, coincidentally, also placed her (and Barry) in 11th and last place in the team event.  As only 10 teams comprised the scoring for the Benkerr Cup their team did not score!

Carol with her bag of lollies!

Blond Moments

Vickie reportedly suffered 2 blond moments! Firstly, on several occasions she tried to attach her ball marker to her hair when she was not wearing a hat! Keith fined her for that in the clubhouse. Secondly, Vickie played Birgit's ball at hole 15. Luckily she realised it before Birgit played Vickie's ball. A two (2) stroke penalty was applied as per the rules! Yikes!!

Late arrival Steph had her own blond moment when she selected a 9 hole competition card instead of the SOS event! An own goal?

Keith Barrow reads out the fines list on behalf of Carol
while Shelley and Gim supervise the collection.

Not sure what is being discussed here!
Colin makes a point to Gerry while Greg listens on.

Keith calls for anyone who wishes to fine someone else!

While many other members were scoring birdies on the 15th hole, Peter went to assist Colin look for his ball under the trees to the left of the 15th tee area. Would you believe it? While Peter was under the largest tree a bird crapped on Peter's neck/shirt collar and had to be assisted by Mark W in cleaning up the mess!  Was this a case of wildlife attacking players?

Raffle

Earle Scarff was the winner of the raffle draw which was expertly conducted by Mark Hill in the absence of Tony Gooch.

Peter scored 2 new Titleist balls from his 4 numbers selected, slightly consoling him from being crapped upon!

Next Week

The 2nd and final round of the Benkerr Cup will be played on the Old Course at the same early start time of 7.24am.

The competition will be American Foursome where both team players play tee shots at each hole, then play a second with their partner's ball. One ball is then selected, and play proceeds, as in a foursome, with the owner of the ball chosen then playing the third shot.
It is a stroke play competition and handicap allowance is 50% of combined handicaps.

Further details are shown below under 'Captain's Corner'.

Captain's Corner

The Benkerr Cup 2nd round Team Captains are:
    Australia - Greg & Colin
ROW - Glen Pope and (TBA).

Team Captains are to organise the teams for their competition from the talent pool available to them. As agreed at the recent General Meeting, it is not necessary that team members play in both rounds to be eligible to play in the competition.

Points will be awarded 1 to 10 where 10 is the best paired score of the day and 1 is worst.
The best 5 scores from each team are taken to determine the winner of the 2nd round.
The total scores for each team from rounds 1 & 2 are totalled to determine the team winner of the Benkerr Cup ~ Australia or ROW.

 End ~ 💨
