Club Championship Round 3

The 3rd round of the Club Championship was held on the Old Course in what must have unquestionably been the coldest day so far this year!  The light wind had a sharp edge to it and most players kept at least two layers of clothes on throughout the round!

Two guests, Mark Jones and Mick Maloney, were part of the 30 strong field.  Generally, it could be said, the conditions were perfect for low scoring . . . but, as we shall see later, a very large percentage of players produced scores in the 80's and even 90's!!

Mark & Mitchell Smith played with
Birgit & Frances in Group 5

Frances, Steph & Birgit ready to start the round!

Mark Jones, Andrea Williams & Gary Burgess at the start.

Gerry Tessier and Mick Maloney layered up
for warmth at the 1st tee.

Group 2 comprising Kerry Edwards, James Axson, Derek Longhurst and Earle Scarff line up to hit off from the green tee on hole 1.

James takes his tee shot !

Derek follows . . . . good swing!

Earle's drive sounds good!

Frances & Birgit share  a 'selfie' during the game!

President's Address

Brett addresses the post match meeting

SOS President, Brett Fordham, brought the meeting to order, noting the high turnout today reflected the strong membership position the club currently enjoys.

Glen Pope tests positive
Brett noted that SOS booking Officer, Glen Pope, had transitioned during the week from being a close contact of a CoVid positive member! We wish Glen a speedy recovery to good health and an early return to the fairways!

Matchplay - auction of finalists
There will be an auction of the match play finalists on 16 July - further details in due course. The remaining match play timetable is:
  • 18 June  -  3rd and final qualifying round
  • 30 July  -  quarter finals
  • 13 August  -  semi finals
  • 10 September  -  final
Mid Year Social Event
A mid-year evening event is planned to be held at Lot Six Zero, Subiaco on Saturday evening, 23 July. Further details will be announced shortly and it is anticipated the theme will be similar to that held last year which featured dishes and dress highlighting each members country of origin!
Anyone wishing to sponsor the auction should approach the President.

Birthdays
Congratulations to Lynne Malone who will be celebrating her birthday on Monday, 6 June!

Committee Meeting
A meeting is planned to be held after the game next week, 11 June.

Next Week's game
The 'Par Plus' game in the fixtures list has been replaced with a '2 Ball Aggregate Stableford" game - further details toward end of blog.

The Results

Congratulations to Mark Hill by winning from Gary Burgess on a countback with a net 75 points, with Barry Treak in 3rd place, 2 points behind!

Only 7 out of 29 players got under a net 80, with the winner still some 3 points off making par!!
The only explanation is that all players were affected to some degree by the chilling conditions!

Golden hole

No-one came close enough! Some sent their ball(s) in very unhelpful directions! Must have been hypothermia starting to take a hold of the extremities by hole 16!

Eagles & Birdies

Only 6 birdies from such a large field of players!
Mark Hill takes top honors claiming 2 birdies, both on low index holes - 18th hole index 2 and 12th hole index 4!!

Ash Tray Collection

Plenty of coins flowed into the collection trays as more than an average number of appalling golf shots resulted in players falling foul of the list of fines!  Again, the very low temperatures on the course appeared to be the common factor!

Mitchell Smith reads out the fines list having narrowly beaten
the blogger for the worst score of the day!

Raffle

Glenn was master of the wheel and churned out the numbers!

And the winner is Tony Gooch!!
With special mention to Richard who claimed 2 of the minor placings!

Tony Gooch wins the Raffle and is
awarded a Lot Six Zero gift voucher

Next Week

Next week's competition will be -  2 Ball Aggregate Stableford - instead of par plus.

In 2 Ball Aggregate Stableford, the two partners add their Stableford score each hole (e.g. 3 points + 2 points = 5 points). Both player's strokes and scores (unless 0 is the score) must be recorded on the card. The scores are then added with the highest number of points winning.

Next SOS Breakfast

The next SOS breakfast at Glen's Lot Six Zero eatery and bistro in Subiaco is planned for 3 July at 9.00am.
Please advise Birgit if you wish to attend.
It will be a good opportunity for anyone who has won a gift voucher and others who would like to enjoy a good breakfast in a great atmosphere!

Captains Corner

Here are a few very useful rules to remember for those odd occasions which occur from time to time!
