Stableford on Tuart

A total of 22 SOS members and one guest, James Axson, rose early for a 7.15am start on the Tuart Course. The stableford competition suited some, but the weather was challenging as the day heated up to the high 30's and the wind progressed to gale force by the end of the round!

Players required a regular supply of liquids to avoid dehydration as they toiled under the clear blue skies!

On the Fairways

Shelley Skinner 'accidently' managed to
hit her golf ball off the fairway!

While Lynley decides how far to push the risk/reward
 equation on her next stroke!!

Brett, Earle & Tony G on the 18th.
Tony's tee shot nearly scored a hole in one coming to rest just 5 cm from the hole!
Certainly close enough to win the golden Hole!

Brett putts for birdie on the 18th!

Post Match

While we were very fortunate to be able to play the round without masks, it was a bit of a shock for most when asked for 'proof of vax' to gain entry to the clubhouse and bar!

Many members had obviously never been to a venue which required 'proof''!

A simple solution was quickly hatched. Those with proof and needing a drink stood behind the barrier while all others took up seats at tables a mere metre or so from the barrier.

Birgit, Steph & Shelley S enjoy a drink inside 'proof of vax' boundary!

President's Address

President Brett Fordham addresses members
on both sides of the thin line!

The President opened proceedings by congratulating Gordon Grzyb who celebrated a birthday on 7 January!

Brett noted the Group's Annual General Meeting was due to be held after the game on Saturday, 19 March 2022 and that the Committee was currently reviewing the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2021 and the proposed budget for 2022.  The annual membership fees are an integral part of the budget and currently under consideration by the committee. Announcements will be made in due course.

The Results

Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, advised that Peter came last this week with a score of just 24, a far cry from his efforts last week when he won the New Year's Cup. Such is golf - a rooster one week, a feather duster the next!

Before proceeding with further results, Gerry noted that Webley Golf Course had announced several changes to the local playing rules that will affect SOS in the short and longer term. Further details are provided under the 'Captain's Corner' section of the blog.

SOS Captain Gerry Tessier announces the competition results!

And congratulations to Gary Burgess with a winning score of 37, one point ahead of Keith Barrow, who was one point clear of Tony Gooch in 3rd place !

Golden Hole

Tony Gooch was taking no prisoners when he sent his 18th hole tee shot to within several centimetres of the hole for a 'tap in' birdie and the pot of gold! So nearly a hole in one. Unfortunately, the pot had been claimed very recently and the prize pool was small!

Tony Gooch wins the Golden Hole jackpot!

Eagles & Birdies

No eagles, but a total of 9 birdies were scored in the blustery conditions !

Captain's Corner News

Wembley Golf  have announced 2 significant changes to the operation of the facility.

One is a permanent change commencing on Tuesday, 18 January 2022 involving the colour coding of tee markers.

The other is a temporary disruption to the 4th & 5th holes of the Old Course, planned for 1 to 21 February 2022 (3 weeks), while drainage pipes are re-routed along Empire Avenue so the pipes drain into the Perry Lake bird sanctuaries instead of into the Swanbourne Drain and the Indian ocean!

TEE MARKERS

On both the Tuart and Old courses the blue and red markers will disappear and be replaced by Black, Green & White markers. By playing from the appropriate tees, Wembley Golf anticipates that everyone can help maintain a good pace of play and enjoy the game more. Public players can choose their tee colour based around their current gross score for 18 holes.

The recommended brackets are:

      Black     For up to 80

      Green     81 to 99

      White     100 +

Other changes will include:

– New design scorecards
– Updated competitions including scratch and slope ratings
– New tee signs
– New golf shop signage
– New tee markers
– New and updated hole indexing based on the last 13,000 competition rounds

In the case of SOS members playing a handicapping/competition round, the printed cards will automatically reflect these changes in MiClub.

Scratch and slope ratings for the Old Course and the Tuart Course will be updated for each colour.

Also, a new index for each hole will be calculated based on the last 13,000 competition results.

Therefore, the Australia Day Cup competition on 22 January 2022 will be held under the new course system!

TEMPORARY DISRUPTION

Modifications to the SOS competition schedule resulting from the 3 week closure of holes 4 & 5 on the Old Course will be:

1-  February 5 - the two rounds of the Summer Cup will be deferred until the 5th and 12th of March, respectively. The cancelled Round 1, which was to be played on the Tuart Course on 5 February, will be replaced by a game of the Vice-Captain choice.

2-  Feb 12 and Feb 19 scheduled on Old Course (play 16 holes only) - no official competition that day (no official card My club available) -  replace by Crazy / Funny golf competition for people that are interested; fees will be adjusted accordingly. If you have a suggestion for Funny golf competition ( 2 players three clubs each, Stableford  Divorce (thanks Keith for proposal) or anything can be fun to play together, please share with committee members, and we can decide at the Sausage sizzle on Australian Day together.

3- Schedule of competition modification:

   Feb 5 - vice-captain choice formula Tuart  7.40am

Feb 12 and 19 - funny Crazy golf competition 7:32am Old Course 16 holes

  March 19 Irish Stableford ( AGM ) Old 8.44am

Facebook Site

After 1 weeks of the creation of our Facebook Site, approx  25 members joined it; this is great!

The objective is Not to replace the blog but add on social network to exchange together about us, sharing information, adding  funny pics and we are going to create Flea Market for the members who wish to sell or buy some golf items; service you can offer etc. and can be used for a recruitment campaign in the future.

Also, if some members  do not want for any reason to have their pics or name on the site, to advise Birgit or me ( we are the administrator of the site ), and we are going to take necessary action.
