New Years Cup

Only 18 SOS Members and one guest, James Axsom, managed to get themselves to Royal Wembley on New Years Day for a stroke competition on the Tuart Course.

Birgit, Keith & Mark H bathed in early morning sunlight!

Richard, Mark S & Gary consider their chances.

Glen Pope & Keith Barrow on the 1st tee.

Another 7.15am start provided a cool breeze before the temperature climbed at just below 30°c. All in all, another perfect golfing day with occasional clouds and little wind to disturb the direction of the ball other than, of course, the hands attached to the club!

Peter Baird & Glenn Kelly ready to hit their first drive!
With Gary photo-bombing in the centre!

Gary & Carol on the course!

On The Fairways

No doubt their were many fine shots played during the course of the competition, but surely none finer than Gerry's first 2 shots on the par 5 15th!!  With the ball pulling up within spitting distance of the hole Gerry took time to plot the angles for a near certain EAGLE!

Checking the lateral slope

A few practice swings

And launch putter, just so!

Arrrrggghhhh!!!!
The ball shaves the hole and stops inches past!!

The Eagle has flown and a Birdie is on offer!

Derek's tee shot on the 18th managed to find the centre of a tuft of tall grasses!
What is wrong with these balls??!?

Club Captain's Address

In the absence of SOS President Brett Fordham, who was possibly still resting after his New Year celebrations, SOS Captain Gerry Tessier brought the meeting to order and congratulated Mark Smith who will be celebrating his birthday on 3rd January!

Also, a warm welcome to James Axsom, a guest player who is seeking membership in due course.

SOS Captain Gerry Tessier announces the competition results!

Competition Results

Firstly, Gerry commiserated with Derek for coming in last place, no doubt wholly attributed to the tuft of grass on the 18th, and thereby earning a bag of lollies and the honor of calling out the fines list!

Then congratulated Peter Baird for scoring a net 68 (from a gross 44 out and 44 in), thereby winning 2 strokes ahead of Mark Smith on 70 and Shelley Yeo on 71.

Shelley later fined herself for taking 9 shots on a par 4 which, had she bogeyed that hole, would have seen her win the match by one shot and thereby taking out both the Christmas Cup and the New Years Cup!

Golden hole

The Golden Hole was set on the par 3, 6th hole and proved to be a tough nut to crack. No winner today, so the jackpot rolls forward to next week.

Avid blog followers may be wondering why Gerry is not on the list after missing his Eagle on the 15th!

That's right! Gerry missed the 'unmissable putt' and had to settle for par !

The Eagle and the Birdie went begging!

Ash Tray

Derek, who had recent experience in these matters, expertly called out the list of fines exhorting members to dig deep and recall all their poorly executed strokes leading to unseemly behaviour and a further gap between their score and handicap!!

Derek calls the fines . .

. . . as Carol & Birgit pass the 'collection plates'!

Raffle

Master of the raffle ball contraption, Glenn 'Pug Dog' Kelly, spins the barrel and the winner is:

  Shelley Yeo!!

Shelley holds up the winner's cash & scratchie!
Good luck!

Captain’s Corner

CC1    -    Clarification rules on hole 14 Tuart course (the water trap!)

If the ball enters the water, you play the ball from the entry point but cannot place the ball on the green. The ball must be dropped on the edge, closest to the entry point and not closer to the pin. The penalty is one shot.

CC2    -    To assist members in planning their next SOS round, the calendar for the remainder of the 2021/2022 season is shown below:

Next Game

As shown above, the next game will be played on the Tuart Course on  8 January.
It will be a stableford competition commencing at 7.24 am.
