Yet again, the Perth weather was perfect for golfing with blue skies and very light winds! The start time at 8.25am allowed for plenty of time to warm up and prepare for the Par competition on the Tuart Course.
Only 20 starters today as, presumably, many others had headed to Royal Fremantle Golf Club to watch Gary Burgess play in the inaugural All Disabilities Competition being held in conjunction with the WA Open.
The 20 players also included guests Sandra and Harold Williams from Wales who were visiting their daughter, Andrea.
|
Small world? Guests Sandra & Harold Wilson recognised SOS Member Richard Osborne, last met many years ago in the UK!! |
|
Ready to rumble!! One of these players came last! |
|
Paul, Mark W, Gerry, Shelley, Glen & Andrea ready to do battle! |
Meanwhile, at Royal Fremantle, the 10 'All Disabilities' players are set to tee off at 8.30am.
SOS Member, Gary Burgess, is 3rd from the right
Gary reported later that he finished in 6th place and was thwarted doing better by the incredible fast greens!
"I finished in 6th place Cameron (the winner) is next to me in blue. The course was very hard with greens so fast you
only had to just touch the ball. I did hit the ball well but the greens did not
do me any favours, 3 putting a lot."
On the fairways - and greens
Meanwhile, on the Tuart Course members and guests settled down to their normal 'hit or miss' game with the greens still to fully recover from the recent coring by ground staff!
Paul Boquest, who managed to find the 18th green with his tee shot, took this photo of his 3 hapless fellow players who all found the left greenside bunker.
First, Peter used his putter to run his ball up the slope and just past the pin! Gerry did likewise, which convinced Shelley to discard her wedge and also use a putter! Bad move!! Shelley's first putt never made it to the lip and rolled back! As you will see later in the blog, had Shelley used her sand wedge, the podium may have looked a bit different!!
Captain's Address
In the absence of President Brett Fordham, Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, opened the meeting by welcoming guests Sandra and Harold Williams.
Gerry noted that the lowest scores today were carded by Mitchell Smith and Barry Treak, both on minus 10 to whom came the honor of accepting a bag of lollies and the fines list to raise funds for the Ash Tray Fund.
Congratulations to winner Paul Boquest for scoring minus 2, with Shelley Yeo, also on minus 2, coming in 2nd place on a countback.
Third place was snatched by Peter Baird on minus 3 from four other players, all with the same score.
It was a close game for the top 9 players, all within 2 points of one another!!

Ash Tray Collection
Boris did a splendid job in calling out the fines and thanks to Shelley and James for collecting from those who felt compelled to atone for their misdeeds!
|
Boris in action! |
While others were made to confess their wrongdoings?!
Shelley even fined herself for smacking the head of one of her irons into her jaw bone whilst trying to extricate said club from her golf bag during the week. Those present were impressed with the size of the purple bruise!
The Raffle
Boris was 'everywhere', including rolling the raffle barrel and calling the numbers!
|
Oh! You do not have the winning number? |
|
Then who does?? |
And the winner is Paul Boquest . . . |
Paul wins a $20 gift voucher and a Callaway ball!

And again
Mat & Bernie are now married!!
Congratulations and best wishes from SOS for a long and happy marriage!
Next Week
The first of 3 Match Play qualifying rounds will be played next Saturday, 7 May 2022, on the Old course.
The 2nd round is on 28 May (Tuart) and the 3rd round on the 18th June (Tuart).
The final will be held on 13 August 2022 on the Old Course.
The SOS Bylaws contain the following provisions in regard to match play competition:
Please familiarise yourself with the following match play rules, as infractions can prove costly!
An official SOS match referee is appointed for each match play competition so, if you are not sure of how to score any hole, do not sign the card and seek the referee to make a final decision!
Captains Corner
To assist members, particularly new members, in completing the competition scorecard in the preferred format, a copy of one, which is considered to be of good quality, is set out below! It happens to have been prepared by the President and Club Captain!
Points to consider:
i Make it as legible as possible.
ii Both player and marker must sign
iii Place a circle around the score to highlight birdies/eagles etc.
iv Record birdies/eagles at top right corner of card close to the score box.
v Write 2nd players name & handicap at top left of card.
After the cards have been used to record the results for the day they are handed to Greg Bennett, SOS's master statistician, who incorporates the results into the annual competition records, which includes the eclectic results, amongst others! Incomplete and/or hard to read cards cause delays and frustration to both the Club Captain immediately after the game and the statistician when later recording the results!
If you have any doubts, please discuss with Gerry or a committee member.
