One of the big days on the SOS Calendar - the Country Cup
Played at Yanchep Sun City Country Club
. |
Designed by Bob Green of Golf and Recreation Planners and
the club’s first captain Murray Dawson, the golf course at Sun City Country
Club is one of WA’s favorite layouts.
The first round was played on
July 27, 1974 after a construction phase of just 15 months and its quality was
immediately recognised by the staging of three WA PGAs from 1975 to 1977.
. |
A major highlight of any round
at Sun City has always been the long sweeping breaks on greens which seem to
keep their line secret until just after impact of putter on ball.
And they've had some fun with naming the holes |
Another unique fascination of
the course is the length of many of its holes, demanding good use of every club
in the bag, including the longest irons. This fascination is made even more
acute off the tee, where the many dogleg fairways (12 out of 14) demand a
perfect line into the outside of the corner.
Playing "Water's Edge" |
Shelley's about to make him an offer he can't refuse |
It was, indeed, an exciting course, visually stunning and
challenging to play. It had everything - water, bunkers, blind tees and the
notorious barranca. Take a good look at it here:
Gerry's back from an extended visit to Canada
. |
Rain threatened before the tee off, but petered out once play started.
Hmmm.. |
A stiff breeze was enough to make club choice a little more
involved than normal, and stopping the ball on the green wasn’t always as easy
as it looked.
. |
Hilly unfortunately couldn't make it - his motor failed to start,
Very disappointed |
in spite of getting the spanners out.
Gave it a good wallop - didn't seem to work |
Not to mention greens that sometimes took a break, and
sometimes didn’t, but most of the time played faster than we were used to.
. |
But a lot of fun nonetheless.
. |
A great day out.
There's one in every group! |
And big thanks to Andrea, for organising
it all, and Vickie, Shelley and Peter for supporting the effort.
I've had a lot of practice of these at Wembley |
Shelley managed to negotiate a reduction on the published
price, and everyone who played (and paid) now has a $20 credit at the SOS
Booking Account. (So bear that in mind next time you pay for golf).
. |
Gerry conspired to make the course more difficult:
It's a Pro V1 - it must be in here somewhere |
Now, you don't really need a club for these shots, I'll show you... |
We had novelties:
This looks pretty easy, just a six iron over the water... |
...bugger! |
Let me show you how.. |
On the fourth, the boys longest drive - Popey, pipped by
guest Ozzie.
The girls longest drive on the fifth - a great roll down
the hill if you got it far enough - Lynley outdriven by Frances.
Nearest the pin on the eighth - Lynley again (don’t put
her in the first group next time), then Mike, Goochy and beaten by Andrea!
Must have been a good one! |
less so? |
Nearest the pin on the seventeenth, Karl, then Mark
Wilson, but Shelley inside both of them.
And the longest putt - Karl, looking good until Andrea
drained a 30 footer!
30 foot from the pin? No problem.. |
We then decamped to the bar, where the Sunday roast
option proved popular for lunch.
. |
We welcomed back Mark Wilson, who has been to England
where he and Trish celebrated their nuptials - congratulations to you both
And we congratulated Gary on his great result in South
Australia.
Next weekend, he’s playing in the WA PGA at Joondalup on
both Saturday and Sunday - do go and cheer him on if you’re free.
A quiet moment before the pandemonium as Nuria draws her own number in the raffle |
The results for the day, a fine spread of good, very good
and decidedly average.
