FELLOWSHIP DAY

.

As our esteemed President remarked after the game - golf is a winter sport.

.

And we were inclined to agree

.

As the rain swept across the fairways

.

Giving us plenty of excuses for poor scores

It was, of course, our Fellowship Day

.

When we join with the WABGA

The West Australian Blind and Vision Impaired Golf Association

.

To celebrate our love of the game

.

And to compete for the shiny new trophy

.

The Austin Cup

Named for our generous sponsor Austin Engineering

.

They are known for Innovative Mining and Fabrication Solutions

And are currently working on finding ways to drive the golf ball further

.

Many thanks to Neville and the rest of the team at Austin

.

And thanks to Gerry, Andrea, Shelley and everyone else who worked to make today possible and fun. Especially those caddies in their hi-vis vests, who gave so generously of their time and talents.

In spite of the weather, it was a very enjoyable day

.

That 17th hole was giving up a slew of birdies today - that lower tee makes for a straight line to the green.

The WABGA proved highly competitive as always

.

And our own version of the Duckworth Lewis calculation - the Tessier Gooch method, was employed to determine the winner.

.

The final result was a score of 26.6 for WABGA and 29.2 for SOS,

So SOS are the inaugural winners of the Austin Cup!

.

The event was brought to a conclusion in the 300 Acres restaurant, as the forecast of inclement weather suggested that a Perry Lakes barbecue could be something of a damp experience.

Not like yesterday..

Pizzas and chips were enjoyed, and a spirited raffle was enlivened even more by a controversy between claimants of a prize for a 6 or an inverted 9. Invigilator Shelley was called in to pronounce a verdict.

.

Ron Anderson for WABGA thanked SOS, noting that the event had been held since 1981, making this the 42nd time.

.

Gerry presented Ron with a cheque for $500, to help continue the wonderful work that the Association does in helping their members enjoy the many benefits that the game provides.

.

Tony acknowledged members’ birthdays this week - Don, Dave Williamson and Coach all have something to celebrate, and there was a big competition for the lollies, with Paul Cooper edging out Derek on countback.

.

Meanwhile, the results of the preliminary rounds of the Match Play have been determined, with 8 players going through to the knockout rounds. The rules are quite specific about how these rounds are to be played, and they are summarised at the end of this blog.

.

RULES FOR MATCH PLAY ELIMINATION FINALS

The semi-finals and the grand final must be played for the trophies to be awarded. That is, the championship cannot be won on a forfeit. If a player is unavailable on a fixture date, then the two affected players may nominate an alternative Saturday or other days, which must be within 14 days of the original fixture date, on either the Tuart or the Old Courses as agreed between the two players. If the players cannot agree on the Course, the fixture must be played on the Course for the original fixture date. The player (or players) must advise the Captain of the alternate date and Course prior to the original fixture date.

.

The Elimination finals will be contested by the top 8 players with

  1. The best score
  2. Are available for the final schedule  for
    1. Qtr Final July 22
    2. Semi-Finals  Aug 5
    3. Final Sept 2

So in summary, if you already know you are not available on that date or cannot catch up within the 14 days – please advise the captain ASAP. As of Today Mark Wilson and Gerry Tessier are going to be overseas during that period and cannot play the final  competition as per the conditions so they will withdraw.
