Divorced Stableford on Old

No one could blame the weather which was ideal for golfing! High 20°c's, a bit of cloud and a freshening sea breeze arrived just when the first group reached the 15th tee on the downhill par 5 !!  There should have been a flurry of birdies on this hole, but only one was scored!

The first SOS golf round for 2023 attracted 25 members which allowed 12 divorced pairs and one single player (Stephanie!?!) to contest the Divorced Stableford competition on the Tuart Course.

Andrea, Ian & Barry cast a long shadow
 in the early morning light.

Shelley & Birgit ready for the competition!

Gerry, Derek, Barry & Ian strike a pose!

Fairways & Greens

Spoiler Alert!

Stephanie holds the Golden Hole marker after watching her ball roll and roll and roll across the 3rd hole green and eventually come to rest a hairsbreadth within the length of the yellow flag stick!! Nice work Steph!!

Pre shot routine fail!!

Post Game Meeting

There was increasing consternation amongst the finishers as there was no sign of the raffle barrel and numbered buttons!

Concerned finishers!

It took 3 blokes to open locker #40 where the raffle stuff was locked away since last week!

Rumours are that only the President, Brett, who was in the last group of 4, knew how to open the locker system . . . . . . push the little green . . . . .

The entombed raffle bag is finally released

President's Address

SOS Golf Group President, Brett Fordham, finally brought the meeting to order ...

Brett Fordham addresses members

The only SOS member celebrating a birthday this week is Gordon Grzyb and the day is today, which probably explains why he is not here. Congratulations Gordon!

With the start of the New Year the SOS annual subscription now becomes due. The amount has been kept the same as last year - $140. Members should pay this amount directly to our Treasurer, Shelley Yeo, or make a payment to the SOS bank account, details of which Shelley can provide on request. A receipt will be issued when payment is made. [Do not remit the amount to the booking fee account of G & L Pope!].

The Annual Par 3 Competition at Lake Claremont is booked for Thursday February 2nd, 2023. Derek will be sending out further details very shortly and taking bookings for the game and post game meal.

Also for your social calendar, the Australia Day Cup will be held on Saturday, 28 January with the post game sausage sizzle being held at Perry Lakes.

Brett advised that he and a number of long term SOS members had attended the funeral of Malcolm Yeo last Thursday. The service was a wonderful celebration of Malcolm's long and eventful life as an aviator, teacher and family man.

Please note that, in the absence of Tony Gooch, Andrea has been appointed temporary Vice Captain and will deliver the results of the Novelties today!

Brett also made a passing reference to 'locker twits' when describing the antics involved in freeing the bag of raffle gear from the locked gentlemen's clothes locker!!

Competition Results

SOS Golf Group Captain, Gerry Tessier, announced the results of the Divorced Stableford competition starting with last place which had been taken by Birgit and himself!!

However, the clear winners today was the team of Earle Scarff and Michael Curtis who won by 9 points, with 2nd place taken by Paul Boquest and Shelley Yeo on 55 points.

Stephanie came 3rd on a countback, also on 55 points.

The scorecards show Earle and Michael scored 12 points on the first hole after nailing a birdie and par, respectively!!   [4 x 3 = 12]. Did anyone else do as well on any hole?

Golden Hole

It has been many weeks since we played on the Tuart Course where the Jackpot on hole 3 had sat at $150.

Yippeee!! What should I spend this on??

Out of the 26 players today, only Stephanie managed to strike her ball within the distance of the flagstick on the par 3 hole!

Congratulations Stephanie for winning the pot of gold!!

Stephanie with her loot!

Eagles & Birdies

No eagles today although there were several attempts from close range!

And only 5 birdies were reported! Congratulations to :

Stephanie, holding Gerry's bag of lollies, and Birgit with her own!

Birgit reads out the long list of fines as Lynley and others collected the coins
!
Shelley made special mention of Ian Holmes losing control of his equipment,
for allowing his buggy to crash into hers!

Ian is provided with a "L" plate to hang on his buggy
to forewarn others of potential danger!

Raffle

The raffle was nearly not held as the bag containing the barrel, balls and counters could not be recovered from the Men's Changing Room locker where it had been placed at the end of last week's meeting!  While those responsible for remembering the electronic code insist they were using the correct number, it simply would not open!!  All was saved once President Brett completed his round and was able to show the hapless custodians how to do it!

Andrea was finally able to spin the balls and the 1st number drawn was held by Barry who received a $20 gift voucher from our sponsor, Lot Six Zero!

Barry wins the raffle draw!

Next Week

A game of par will be played on the Tuart Course commencing around 7.24am.

Player’s score in Par competitions by receiving a plus (+), minus (-) or square (□) at each hole played in relation to his/her handicap.

A point or plus (+) is achieved by beating par at a hole in relation to the player’s handicap.

A square (□) is achieved by matching par at a hole in relation to the player’s handicap. A point is deducted or a minus (-) placed on the card if the player fails to beat or match par at a hole in relation to the player’s handicap.

The player’s score for each hole should be placed in the appropriate column (e.g. your score in the Marker 1 column) and the points in the Result column.

SCORE CARD REMINDER

Please take some time during, and at the end of the round, to ensure your score card has been correctly completed and is legible! At the end of the round, check with your scorer that both cards have the same data before processing them at the Pro Shop scanner.

The Captain collects the cards before the post game meeting in order to ensure there are no discrepancies with the electronic results list and to announce those that made eagles, birdies or other interesting facts!

After the meeting the cards are handed to Greg Bennett who uses the information to update his data bank for the annual eclectic results and other category winners.

The example below, although with several corrections, is a good example of containing all the required information (see arrows).
