Match Play Semi Final

The BOM radar showed plenty of heavy showers gusting over the city beaches from the NW at speeds around 45 kph!  So the blogger, who fortunately stayed home nursing a gout affected wrist, assumes players experienced a wild & wet round of golf on the Tuart Course!  The stories and photos received confirmed it was indeed a wet and wild day of golf!

The first casualty was Barry Treak who never made it to the course due to an injury received the day before whilst having a practice round with Gerry!  Barry's match play opponent, Tony Gooch, was left to fine tune his game and the pair will have to arrange a time to play their semi final match in the next two weeks.

This left Michael Curtis vs Gerry Tessier to contest their match play semi final, and first to tee off, followed by 13 SOS wet weather fanatics playing an individual stableford game.

Match Play almost on its way.

The Last Group - 4 'Girls'

What a nice bunch of golfers!

"That is where the rain will be coming from!"
(Jurian Bay as per BOM / Gary Burgess)

Gerry casting a spell on opponent Michael!?

Michael massages Andrea's back after
pulling a back muscle on the driving range!

Vickie, Frances & Shelley swathed in wet weather gear!

Gerry preparing his scorecard.
Still very confident!

Fairways & Greens

Steph and Birgit
Still smiling!
Stephanie pulled out at hole 13 when the wind carried away her
buggy/clubs/umbrella, leaving her too exhausted and dispirited to continue!

Bernie & Andrea huddle under their umbrellas!!
Andrea pulled a back muscle while hitting practice balls and only made
it to hole 3 before retiring to become Birgit's caddie!
Bernie stopped after 9 holes . . . is she really Irish?

Birgit reports that her and Stephanies balls twice hit each other on the 7th hole. Firstly on the fairway and then  on the green when Steph chipped out of the back rough and collided with her ball, which was already on the green! What are the chances of that? Better than a hole in one?

With Birgit remaining the sole player in the last group, the group in front of her, comprising Earle, Vickie, Shelley & Frances, asked Birgit (& caddie Andrea) to join them from the 15th hole.

This apparently worked well until the 18th when Earle's ball was declared 'lost' after none of the 5 girls watched where his tee ball went! Earle was apparently not amused!

Frances made it to the end, slightly damp!

So did Vickie, although slightly damper!!

Captain's Address

SOS Captain, Gerry Tessier, addressed the members remaining and who had not already succumbed to the big wet and gone home!

Gerry noted that he had been saddened recently by word from Glen Pope of the loss of his Mother.  On behalf of all SOS members, Gerry expressed our sincere condolences to Glen and his family.

The Results

Match Play Semi final

The semi finals were marred by two events.

Firstly, Gerry got beaten by Michael 4/2 and,

Secondly, the Boris/Goochy match had to be deferred following a back injury sustained by Boris during a Friday warm-up game!  This match will be rescheduled in accordance with the SOS Rules & ByLaws, which provides for the match to be played in the next 14 days.

According to Gerry, he was beaten by the better player on the day . .  and may have experienced a small bit of humility, or perhaps not!!  Gerry noted the handicaps gave Michael a 10 stroke advantage which he was unable to overcome!

Individual Stableford Competition

In an ominous sign of things to come, Goochy drowned the opposition with a magnificent display of  ball striking in the wet conditions, scoring 35 points and took 1st place, which included a birdie on the 10th.

Second was Glenn (Pugdog) Kelly with a score of 34 including 2 birdies on the 13th & 18th holes!

Shelley Yeo took 3rd place with 32 points.

The rain and wind caused such poor playing conditions that both Bernie and Stephanie quit early in the round and headed for the Club House!

Andrea's warm up injury prevented her from playing past hole 3, so she sportingly continued on with the round as Birgit's caddie!

Novelties

Congratulations to the four players who cleaned up all of the Novelty prizes!

With Tony Gooch in the first group of match players, it was always going to be a challenge for those following! So, well done Frances and Derek!

Birgit made a great effort to out-play her 5 rivals for the Ladies Longest Drive! However, by the 7th hole Andrea had already ceased playing, leaving Stephanie, Bernie & Vickie to beat!

Ash Tray Collection

Greg Bennett filled in for Colin Kerr and read out the list of fines and received the bag of lollies!

Thanks Greg!

Raffle

The  raffle was not held due to the small number of players at the finish and who all had a strong desire to get home quickly for a hot shower and dry clothes!

Captain's Corner

Country Cup - Araluen Country Club - Sunday 25 September 2022

As the Country Cup is only 6 weeks away, it is time to lock in the date and start your altitude training!

At next week's post game meeting Shelley Yeo will be circulating a list to obtain confirmation of those members and their friends who wish to attend this popular event!

Other Thoughts

Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, is rarely left speechless however, after playing in the match play semi final he was apparently moved by the following  . . . . and thought others may wish to share in his experience!
