Club Championship 1

There was more than a full turnout as a record 28 members turned up to contest the 1st of 7 Club Championship rounds; today's round being a stroke competition played on the Tuart Course.

Perhaps the 8.55am tee off was also a contributing factor to the turnout numbers?

Thanks to Glen Pope for successfully negotiating with Wembley Golf to increase the maximum number of SOS time slots from 6 to 7.

The weather was magnificent! Clear blue skies, temperature in the mid 20's, and the occasional light breeze. Nothing could go wrong . . . or could it?

Birnie returns after a break, with Glenn

Group 2 on the tee - PugDog, Goochy, Derek & Ian

Gerry, Goochy, Lynley (in shadow), Lynne & Vickie

James, Richard & Earle

Action on the course

Two near holes in 1

Glen a little too long on the Tuart #6 hole; but it had a chance of a HIO!
In the background, Glen's remote controlled MGI is leading the charge off the tee!

Linley just a little short of a hole in 1 on the Tuart #12.

Hitting Up

Glenn Kelly scored a birdie on the 7th having managed to drive his tee shot onto the green on this par 4 hole!

Unfortunately, PugDog did so when the group in front, consisting of Birgit, Lynne, Lynley & Stephanie, were still on the green putting!!

Word has it that he left before he could be fined!!

Rake Obstruction

Gary's round was not without incident as his 2nd shot to the green on hole 9 found its way into the greenside bunker and lodged itself next to a rake! With the 3 minute 'lost ball' rule counting down Birgit spotted the ball next to the rake enabling Gary to execute a decent shot onto the green!

Bunbury Canadian Foursome Ladies Competition

Birgit reports . . . "Shelley and I went to Bunbury playing Canadian foursome in a Ladies competition….though we only ranked 20th (out of 74) with 34 points we had an enjoyable day.

Gary in Training for the 97th WA Open

The 97th WA Open Golf Tournament will takes place at the Royal Fremantle Golf Club from next Thursday, 28 April, until Sunday 1st May. For the first time the WA Open will include an 'All Abilities Tournament' consisting of 12 players selected Australia wide for their golfing excellence while living with a disability. The All Abilities Tournament will be played over 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday, teeing off ahead of the WA Open players that make the cut after the competition on Thursday and Friday.

Gary Burgess has been selected as one of the 12 'All Abilities' golfers and Shelley Yeo's brother, Kim,  has agreed to be his caddy!!

SOS congratulates Gary for being selected and our very best wishes to him and Kim for a successful tournament!

Gary in training . . . . but what is that in his right hand?!!

The Winners Podium

As Gary Burgess (2nd) and Lynley Hunter (3rd) had already taken their leave, only Gerry Tessier was available to mount the winners podium!

Novelties

Congratulations to all the winners!

Why were there no contenders for the 'LD - Mens' when the winner, Glen Pope, was in the last group? Surely some other male's ball stopped on the fairway?!

Golden Hole

The Golden Hole, which I think may have been on hole 3, did not attract a winner despite 28 attempts!

Eagles & Birdies

Congratulations to the players who managed to score a birdie (or two)!

A total of 13 birdies were scored by 10 players. The top 4 players scored 6 birdies, which obviously assisted in their low scores!

While Tony Gooch scored two and yet came 22nd?!

Raffle

The raffle was won by Brett who scored a $20 Lot Six Zero gift voucher.

Barry won several raffle balls after selecting a large number of disks.

Ash Tray Collection

As a very recent member, Michael Curtis got his first taste of the ritual of collecting money for the SOS Ash Tray Fund!  Assisted by coin collectors Greg and Shelley, Michael called the list of fines and watched as members freely gave up their loose change to atone for their poor golfing skills and other misadventures!

Michael calls the fines list.

Mark signals his guilt to some golfing irregularity!

Next Week

A Par competition will be played on the Tuart Course on 30 April 2022.

Captains Corner

Stroke Play - Pick Up after 10 strokes

The Committee has decided that when playing a stroke competition the maximum number of strokes shall be 10. So, if you are unfortunate enough to take 10 strokes without holing the ball, then you pick up your ball and write down 10 in the scorecard.

Players who have scored 10 strokes on a hole are unlikely to be competitive in that golf round, so this practice is one of expediency, allowing the game to proceed without undue delay.

Searching for a ball

Most SOS members will recall the recent hunt for a lost ball, or balls!

Here are some useful rules to follow in the event your ball goes in a direction other than that planned and has to be searched for!
