Par Comp on Tuart

Winter must be approaching as the start time was advanced by 30 minutes to 7.45am. However, the temperature was similar to last week, low 30's and the wind a bit windier!

Twenty two SOS members turned up for the par competition on the Tuart Course which, fortunately, had not yet been cored, so there were no impediments to low scores, at least on the putting side of the game.

Photos from 26 February game

A number of excellent photos sent to the blogger last weekend did not make it into the blog as they were held up in the iinet email system for several days. To ensure contributors are not discouraged from sending in photos in the future, they are now published below:

President's Address

President, Brett Fordham, welcomed all to the post match meeting. It was noted several players had opted to avoid the meeting due to the heightened risk of Covid transmission in the confined space!

Brett announced that, for the 5th week in a row there were no members birthdays to celebrate - but a few come up later in March.

Members were reminded the SOS 2022 annual general meeting will take place on 19 March and that information regarding the meeting was sent to all members by the Communications Officer on 4 March.

Competition Results

Club Captain, Gerry Tessier announced that Frances Longhurst had won the competition with a net score of 70.

Second and third places both scored 71 with Glen Pope beating Mark Wilson on a countback!

A total of 5 birdies were recorded, while Greg took up the honor of coming last and was awarded the traditional bag of lollies and given the list of fines to read out!

Golden Hole

The Golden Hole this week was on the 3rd hole, whereas last week it was in the 18th.
No winner today, so the jackpot rolls over. As it is, the pot was emptied last week by Puggsy 'Centrefold' Kelly, so the rollover amount is in the order of $20.

The Raffle

And the winner is . . . ??  Does anyone remember who won?

Keith & Carol managed the raffle with the assistance of a stuffed bird!

Ash Tray Collection

Greg Bennett, ably assisted by cash collectors Gerry and Boris, called out the list of fines and extracted coins from most members for all manner of foul play, miss hits, inattention and indiscreet language!

Lynne Malone noted the take might have been a lot more had Gary been able to attend the meeting!
Word has it, that Gary became embroiled in a one or more bunker catastrophes taking 4 (?) shots to get out of one. Details are scarce, so next week's blog may contain further details of Gary's bunker battles!

The Ash Tray collection in progress!

Next Week

The 2nd and final round of the Summer Cup will be played on the Old Course.  The greens will be cored adding that extra bit of unpredictability that makes golf so much fun!

The Summer Cup is a stroke play competition with the winner scoring the lowest net strokes over the 2 rounds.

SOS Breakfast Club

SOS Breakfast Club's first event is scheduled for Sunday, March 27 at 9.00am to Glen's Lot Six Zero restaurant at Subiaco. Please confirm to Birgit before March 24.

Captain's Corner

Golfers world wide are being encouraged to avoid slow play wherever possible!

Please consider introducing the following ideas into your game!

READY GOLF  from GOLF R & A

When “ready golf” is encouraged, players have to act sensibly to ensure that playing out of turn does not endanger other players.

“Ready golf” should not be confused with being ready to play, which is covered in the Player Behavior section of The R&A Pace of Play Manual.

The term “ready golf” has been adopted by many as a catch-all phrase for a number of actions that separately and collectively can improve the pace of play. There is no official definition of the term, but examples of “ready golf” in action are:

·         Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options

·         Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait

·         Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play

·         Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball

·         Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line

·         Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a green-side bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker

·         When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player has to walk to their ball and assess their shot

·         Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off

·         We can add, going to the next tee after you finish your putting and if there is a possibility prepare for your drive -but waiting at least of another member from your group joined to check your ball direction.

  End
