Irish Stableford Teams

A perfect day to celebrate St Patricks Day on the Old Course - even a sensible 8.35am start!

Six teams of 4 players lined up to contest the Irish Stableford Teams Competition, bearing a range of, well, Irish team names:

Team 1        To Be Sure To Be Sure
Team 2        Emerald Gold
Team 3        Earle & the Shamrock Sheilas
Team 4        The Bug Boys
Team 5        The Blarney Kissers
Team 6        The Naughty Irish Sausages

The weather was showing some signs of autumn with considerable cloud cover and temperatures in the high 20's.  A magnificent day for golfing  . . . . . . and for the SOS 2022 Annual General Meeting which followed at the Perry Lakes picnic area after the game.

The theme was GREEN!
Birgit, Shelley, Derek, Frances & Richard

Richard looking resplendent!
Surely a candidate for 'best dressed'?

Stephanie in emerald & black camouflage!

Peter & Carol ready to tee off!

Club President, Brett Fordham examining Tony James' ball!

Team To Be Sure To Be Sure (missing Brett) ready to tee off as group 1.

Club Captain and Vice Captain conferring before play
as Vickie and Frances chat in the background.

Tony forgot to wear green, but sporting
a large Band-Aid on his leg!

April, Birgit, Stephanie & Gim
 representing teams 6, 2, 6 & 4, respectively.

Earle & Vickie on the shortlist for best couple!

Lynne & Lynley with a smattering of green!

Birgit, Richard & Carol . . again
But they do look in the spirit!

On the Fairways

Not much to report this week as only two photos were received of play in progress!

On the 3rd hole, Mark Smith's tee shot veered very left and buried itself in the long grass next to the (former) ladies tee! Mark's recovery shot managed to get the ball back on the fairway, which required both strength and a bit of good fortune!

Two holes further on, Glen lost control of his remotely controlled MGI buggy (again!) which decided to career into the left greenside bunker on hole 5!  At least water was not present on this occasion!

Glen recovers his buggy from the bunker!

Perry Lakes Subway & Drinks

Once again the Social Committee and many helpers provided a sumptuous meal of Subway wraps and buns, together with copious quantities of icy cold beer, wines and other drinks.

Well done Carol and her team!

It was a very enjoyable occasion, made a little easier by a distinct absence of kookaburras which had seemingly become extinct, at least around Perry Lakes. There were, however, quite a number of magpies running around on the ground asking to be fed. At least they do not swoop from on high and remove food from your fingers, plate or mouth!

President's Introduction

SOS Golf Club Inc. President, Brett Fordham, opened the meeting and welcomed all to the post match meeting at the club's normal BBQ venue, the Perry Lakes picnic area. Brett noted there were 21 members present today which will enable the AGM to proceed with the required quorum after today's results had been announced and other regular activities have been completed.

Brett congratulated Lynley Hunter who would be celebrating her birthday on 21 March!

The Results

Club Captain, Gerry Tessier took the floor to announce the results of the Irish Stableford Teams event and individual stableford competition:

Eagles & Birdies

Either a very mediocre day for low scores, or perhaps some forgot to record birdies on their card next to their score.  In the event, only one birdie was recorded - congratulations to Brett:

Golden Hole

With only 1 birdie being scored it was a big 'ask' for anyone to get close enough to the pin on the 16th hole!  Mark Smith got close, but not close enough.
Another jackpot rollover to 9 April when the Old Course will next be played.

Ash Tray Collection

Birgit won the bag of lollies for coming last, although there were several others who scored in the low 20's !

Lynne and Lynley collected the coins as they flew in their scores into the boxes!

Even Glen stumped up for losing control of his equipment!

And the coins keep flowing!

Raffle

A certain amount of mayhem in the raffle draw!  First ball down the ramp was number 3 held by Peter who, unfortunately, still had his discs at the bottom of his pocket and did not hear the call anyway! So a redraw was held and won by Shelley who won a $20 Lot Six Zero gift card!  Shelley kindly offered to hand over the prize after Peter later revealed the contents of his pocket!
A selfless act!

SOS Golf Group 2022 Annual General Meeting

Brett Fordham formally opened the SOS Golf Group Inc. 2022 Annual General Meeting and advised that the 21 members present exceeded the quorum required by the Group's constitution to hold a valid meeting of members. An apology had been received from Gary Burgess who was unable to attend for quarantine reasons.

Brett referred to the meeting agenda which had been distributed some time ago and includes the matters to be tabled at the meeting.

President's Speech

The Presidents 2022 speech on the Group's activities follows:

The 2021 / 2022 golfing calendar was relatively free from Covid interruption to our annual fixtures. There was some shifting of scheduled matches due to inclement weather (1 match) and reticulation works to the Old Course (2 matches), however main trophy events were not impacted.

The match against the WABGA was played May 9th recommencing after the 2021 fixture being cancelled through Covid. SOS golf club retained the Fellowship trophy 6 wins / two losses and the club generously donated $400 to the WABGA.

Membership is currently 34 paid members and 3 honouree members totalling 37 full members in the club. We welcomed as new members Mark Smith, Mitchell Smith and James Axson. Sadly we have lost Maureen Sundari, and Shelly Skinner leaving the club. The club has fielded an average of 23 - 24 players per week over the past 12 months being great support to our competitions.

The club donated $175 to the Park Honour Avenue Group which was supported through the collected fines through November with club members being generous in support with their coin donations.

Lot Six Zero continues to be a strong sponsor of the club with further donations to subsidise club shirts, weekly first prize winners of the raffle and contribution to the 50th year anniversary shirts that the committee are organising through the 2022 calendar year.

An international “Plate of Origin” night was held at the Subiaco Lot Six Zero restaurant whereby members bought along food originating from their place of birth. A great night which included auctioning of the 2022 Match Play finalists being very successful.

The Country Cup competition was held at Pinjarra Golf Club on September 30th, a strong field showed up for the annual event to take on the hidden hazards of the country course.

On 21 November the Annual Dinner took place again at La Casetta in Wembley, the evening was well attended by members and partners, credit to the organising committee in support of a great club night.

Barry and Jenny Treak very kindly entertained us at their house in Woodlands for the “Christmas Cheer” event in late December. Again a well-attended event and the host’s support was very much appreciated.

Lake Claremont was the venue for another Par 3 competition on February 3rd, followed by a meal and drinks. Richard Osborne finished top of the field with a net score of 24. Thanks go to Derek Longhurst who again did a great job as the event organiser.

Special thanks throughout the year to celebrity Bloggers Peter, Birgit, Derek. Those assistants and venue owners supporting our social events. A big thank you to the committee who have filled the required roles to perform club duties that without we simply would not have a club to belong too.

A special thanks to Vicki Scarff who continues to provide silent support to the committee in running the SOS club to the Constitution and By-laws.

Brett concluded his speech by proposing a vote of thanks to members of the SOS Committee.

The following motions were put to the meeting, all of which were approved:

1.    The Minutes of the 2021 AGM were accepted and signed by the President.

2.    The Treasurer's report and annual statement of accounts for the year ended 31 December 2021 were accepted.

3.    The annual membership fees for 2022/2023 of $140 per member and $80 for junior members was approved.

4.    The 2022 budget was approved.

5.    The annual fixtures list was approved.

Election of Committee Members

The President tabled individual nominations for each position on the Committee. With the approval of members, the following were elected:

President

Brett Fordham

Captain

Gerry Tessier

Vice-Captain

Tony Gooch

Treasurer

Shelley Yeo

Booking Officer

Glen Pope

Social Organiser

Carol Barrow

Communications Officer

Peter Baird

General Business

The two matters raised by Greg Bennett in general business (i) rules to regulate the conduct of the Benkerr Cup and, (ii) amendment to the eligibility to contest the SOS Memorial Trophy, were discussed at some length. The President noted that motions addressing these issues could be presented to a general meeting of members in the short term.

In addition, the Club Captain, Gerry Tessier raised a number of matters that he felt should be considered by the Committee.

In formally closing the meeting the President thanked everyone in attendance for contributing to a successful AGM and looked forward to seeing everyone next week at the start of the new season.

Blog note: The formal draft minutes of the AGM will be produced in due course which will contain a more detailed account of proceedings.

Members appeared tired at the end of the AGM ?!?

Next Week

This is the SOS Opening Day, the start of the 2022/2023 season.

A stableford competition will be held on the Tuart Course on 26 March 2022 for the Perry Lakes Cup.  The start time is expected to be 8.44am, so no excuses for turning up late!

The Captains Corner

How not to miss an unmissable put.

Do not act in haste!
Pick up, clean & replace the ball.
Walk away several metres and check the green for slope, worm holes etc.
Take several deep breaths!
Take your normal stance.
Tap it in the hole.

Ça Alors !

Social Calendar

Breakfast at Lot Six Zero

Shelley2's Farewell - Saturday March 26

Is it Australian, or is it originally NZ?  The list keeps mounting…

  • Phar Lap
  • The Pav
  • Lamingtons
  • Crowded House
  • Dragon
  • Rebecca Gibney
  • Keith Urban
  • Russell Crowe
  • Quade Cooper
  • Stephanie Jeffares
  • Even the humble ANZAC biscuit isn’t immune to such blasphemous claims.

Then there’s the almighty of all – the underarm bowl…

Come and debate it all at Shelley2’s farewell from SOS on Saturday, 26 March.  She’s even stretching to a modest bar tab

Following the formalities, hang around, chew the fat and say Haere Ra, farewell.

All you SOS’s out there are welcome.
