SOS Cup - Final Round

Another magnificent spring day at Royal Wembley to determine the winner of the SOS Cup won so convincingly last year by Barry Treak !  The Stroke Competition was played on the Tuart Course.

Barry has held the SOS Cup for a year!

While 21 players lined up for Round 2, only 12 had a chance of winning the cup by competing in both rounds.

The 9 other players included former member Ivar Holm, who is normally seen playing at the Yokine Golf Club, and Chloe Bedlow who was enjoying her 3rd game with SOS.

Birgit decided to take a break from golf after scoring a net 94 last week.
The pool and the company of her dogs was a more appealing option! !

MGI remote controlled buggy goes missing!

There was an air of bewilderment after Gerry, Brett, Barry & Peter had putted out on the 10th green when Gerry was unable to locate his remote controlled MGI buggy!

Barry, Gerry and Brett start searching the rough between the 10th green & 9th fairway

They even start searching the 9th fairway only to be told there had been
no sightings of an orphan buggy without player on the 9th!

A drone would have been useful to search for the rouge equipment, however the buggy was eventually found to have taken a bee line for the 11th tee, climbed the slope, across the teeing area and got wedged in the trees on the downslope toward the road!!  Gerry was thankful there were no water hazards in the vicinity!

It could have been worse !!

This minor inconvenience did not put Gerry off his game as, a few holes later, he pulled off a remarkable approach shot to the 14th hole by sending it cleanly through the fork in the tree, thus allowing it to proceed down the right side slope toward the green and avoiding the very large water hazard encircling the green's left side.  Gerry was hesitant to say whether or not he had planned it that way!

The President's Message

Brett Fordham opened the meeting by welcoming visitor Ivar Holm, a long time former member of SOS Golf Group, as well as Chloe Bedlow who is back for her third game with SOS.

Congratulations and best wishes were extended to both Earle Scarff and Bernie Chaffrey who celebrate their birthdays next week on the 11th and 12th respectively.

Brett also announced that further details of the Benkerr Cup would be announced this week (see below), noting that captains of the two teams had been chosen as follows:

Team Australia        -    Greg Bennett & Colin Kerr
Rest of the World    -    Derek Longhurst

Brett included a few remarks on the frailties of remote
 control technology combined with golf!

The Results

The results of the 2nd Round of the SOS Cup saw Shelley Yeo scoring a magnificent net 66, a clear 6 shots ahead of second placed Ivar Holm on 72 and Brett Fordham one point behind on 73.

There were a total of 8 birdies, but the Golden Hole was not claimed and gets to jackpot to next time on the Tuart.

Two Birdies were scored by each of Brett & Gordon, while Shelley Yeo, Frances Longhurst and Tony James each scored one. No doubt there were many near misses!

Winners of the second round are 1st Shelley, 2nd Brett and 3rd Steph!
With Cup winner Frances and Club Captain Gerry Tessier.

Ash Tray collection

Tony called out the list of fines ensuring that no indiscretion was missed so that members could pour their loose change into the coffers of the Ash Tray! The presentation went so smoothly some might think Tony has done this before!

TJ bagged the lollies after an unfortunate run of bad luck on the course.

Golden Hole and Eagles

Both escaped the combined best efforts of 21 players today! Maybe next week?

Captains Corner

To assist members in adhering to current rules the Club Captain, Gerry Tessier, has provided the following details which became effective from 1 January 2019:

Noticeably absent is a time limit for searching for lost remote controlled buggies!

Next Week

The calendar informs us that a game of Stableford is being played on the Tuart Course however, this has been replaced by the first of a two round competition for the initial Benkerr Cups - see below.

The Benkerr Cup

The following details are provided by Gerry Tessier, SOS Club Captain, to explain the origin of the Benkerr Cup and the rules by which it will be played on 16 and 23 October :

1.     BENKERR CUP is a new competition and named in honour of Greg Bennett and Colin Kerr, our most senior members whose membership goes back to the initial formation of SOS Golf Group.

2.     The competition is Ryder Cup style - Australia vs The Rest of the World.

3.      Brett is the Captain of the Australian Team.   Assistant Captain to be confirmed.

4.     Gerry is the Captain of THE RED MACHINE (Rest of the World). Derek is Assistant Captain.

5.     The event is played over two consecutive Saturdays - Competition dates are 16 October (2BBB on the Tuart Course) and 23 October (American Foursome on the Old Course).

6.     The 2BBB (Better/ Best Ball) tournament involves a Team of 2. Each team member plays their own ball throughout the round, and after each hole report the best score and Stableford points which is registered as the official score for the team.
Example on ROW team Derek and Gerry are on the same team - Derek played 6 on par 5 for 2 Stableford points and Gerry played 7 for 1 point. The official score on the card must read 6 strokes & 2 points.
It is important to report the score correctly in case of equal scores.

7.     The AMERICAN FOURSOME format also involves 2 players where both drive their own ball off the tee, then switch to play their partners ball for the second stroke. After 2 strokes the team decides the best ball to continue play, with the two players taking alternative stokes until the ball is holed. ie Gerry will hit the tee ball of Derek, and Derek will hit the tee ball of Gerry; Gerry and Derek then decide which ball is best placed and take alternative strokes until the ball is holed.

Scoring is based on Stroke Play.

8.     We probably do not have an even number of players for each team, so the Captain will manage to balance it for the score of the competition. Everyone who wants to play will play!

9.     The same team of two will remain for each competition.

10.  The prize will be for the best 3 teams of the 2 competitions.

11.  There will be a Sausage sizzle after the second competition at Perry Lake.

12.  We encourage everyone who will join to have something to represent your team.

13.  The Australian Team will also have the privilege to wear an official SOS shirt.

14.  ROW - our Team name is The Red Machine - if you have something Red, shirt, hat, pants :) and also we encourage something from your origin country, small Flag etc.

15.  We hope everything will be ok, and if something happened, both Captains will discuss and make a decision!

16.  Handicaps will be based on that existing on each competition day.

17.  Normal Wembley golf score cards will be used for the competition.

18.  You can print a card for competition to confirm your daily handicap or use WA Golf apps for your Handicap of the day.

19.  We hope that this new kind of competition will be a success and everyone will enjoy it. The current official list of players is shown below with final teams to be advised by end of next week.
