Club Championship Round 5

The 5th round of the Club Championship was held on the Old Course in decidedly chilly conditions!

However there was much to be happy about!

Perth's mid-week 4 day lock-down had been lifted late on Friday allowing the competition to go ahead although face masks were required to be worn at all times.  Playing conditions were generally very favorable. There was no rain in sight and very little wind to blame for balls being hit off the fairways! Most players kept at least 3 layers of clothing on during the round due to the almost total cloud cover.

And the Golden Hole jackpot was up for grabs having increased to $343!

But the best news came mid week when Keith and Carol, who had earlier advised they had visited Ikea at the same time as a Covid positive case, declared themselves to be 'negative'! A great weight was lifted from both Brett and Peter, in particular, who had played with the Barrows last week!

Mark, Earle, Frances & Derek barely visible
through the early morning mist!

Barry, Keith & Carol masked and rugged up.

Gerry, Lynne, Shelley & Lynley on the 1st tee.
Lynley taking no chances with hypothermia!

Group 4 - Birgit, Greg, Steph & Colin also stop for a group photo!

Keith consumes a large muffin as Peter selects his raffle numbers.

Presidents' Address

SOS Golf Group President, Brett Fordham, welcomed members and guest, Mark Wilson, to the post match meeting, noting that it was fortunate the Covid virus lock-down had been lifted on Friday night allowing the 5th round of the Club Championship to proceed.

Birthdays

On behalf of SOS Brett congratulated members David Williamson and Tony Gooch who celebrate their birthdays on 2nd July and 5th July respectively.

New Members

Brett officially welcomed two new members who had joined SOS in recent days. Mark Hill holds a 12 handicap and Gordon Grzyb a 10.4 handicap!  Both appear destined to give the low handicappers a bit of a shake up!

Winter Cup

Members were reminded the Winter Cup competition will be held over the next two Saturdays, being the 10th and 17th of July. This is a stroke competition, first on the Old Course and the second round on the Tuart Course.

Sausage Sizzle

Brett confirmed the earlier advice that the sausage sizzle, that had been planned for today, had been re-scheduled for next week.

International Night

Brett confirmed that our Social Organiser, Carol Barrow, has organised an International Evening to be held on Saturday night, 24 July commencing at 7pm. Glen has kindly offered us his premises at LOT SIX ZERO (corner of Station and Hood St) Subiaco. Partners are invited and, if you have not already done so, please advise Carol directly on whether or not you will attend. See Keith Barrow's email dated 29 June for details.

Golden Hole

Well, it has taken 343 golf strokes, but the Old Course Hole 16 Jackpot has finally been claimed and, by all accounts, it was not by divine intervention or a ricochet off one of the nearby trees, but a carefully executed stroke by Maureen Sundari!

Maureen takes the Golden Hole and $343 !

For the technically minded, Maureen used a 4 hybrid which, she modestly advised, 'usually would be too long for the distance but after many weeks of trying to get there and wasn’t good enough, this time I chose to swing easy and relaxed, but still making sure it’s a good set up, correct alignment, executed good contact, finished full swing, then hope for the best.

I supposed this time I got them all right. Even after it dropped on the green it traveled straight towards the hole and stopped around 50 cm from the hole.'

So, there you have it!

Maureen was unable to stay for the post game meeting, but has proposed celebrating the winnings with members soon when parenting duties allow !

For the rest of us, keep swinging !

Eagles & Birdies

No less than 10 birdies scored today! And Maureen managed to hole her 2nd shot on the 16th!
However, there were no Eagles and the birdies did not include any of the low index holes.
Anyway, congratulations to the 7 winners, particularly Shelley, Mark and Colin for their doubles.
