NEW YEARS CUP

Happy New Year to all our members - good to see we're all still here and enjoying our golf. Here's to knocking a few strokes off that handicap in 2019.

Birthday girl - but where's the cake?

Talking of which, we're taking a big step next week, and having a trial of using the new electronic cards. (A clarification - the cards themselves aren't electronic, they're actually made of paper as they always were. However, they will be read electronically)

What this means, is that you will pay Glen in the usual way, then go into the pro-shop, where you will enter your Golflink number into Wembley's you beaut computer and get your electronic card, which will look like this. (Don't worry, we'll have a list of everyone's number by the computer)

You'll give it to your partner who will fill in the right hand side as usual, but will also put a cross to indicate your score in the left hand side. So far, so simple.

Then, at the end of the round, go into the pro shop where your card will be scanned - keep the card, and give it to Vickie as usual (this is a back up for now, shouldn't be necessary).

The Wembley computer will then prepare a report with everyone's scores, calculate the winner, and at the same time update everyone's handicap. These results will be available as soon as the last card has been scanned.

This is just a trial for next week - we're in discussions with Wembley as to whether this should be our usual procedure. The following week - back to normal.

Ian back from circumnavigating the nation - good to have you back, sir.

Other news - your annual membership is now due and payable. We're keeping the fee to $100 for this year, you can pay it via EFT to the SOS account, or directly to our treasurer on game day. It's the same account into which you paid your annual dinner payment - I'll try and remember to include the details in the email that gives you the link to the blog (too insecure here).

Gentlemen, start your engines.

And even more news. The new rules come into force now, and Gary has already availed himself of the relief attached to kicking your ball accidentally and hitting your cart - congratulations Gary.

But there are also local rules that your committee has the option on instigating. They have decided, after taking the view of the group into account, to adopt the rule which limits the score on any hole to a maximum of ten. This means that once you've reached ten playing stroke, you pick up your ball and record a ten. It also means, if you fail to complete the hole, you will be scored a ten (so you no longer have to DQ yourself).  Stableford, of course, remains as it always did - pick up if there are no points left in the hole for you.

Lazy summer days - a couple of beers wouldn't go amiss

There is another local rule which the group considered, but rejected. This is the rule that permits a drop on the fairway with a two stroke penalty for a lost ball. This will not be implemented by SOS - if you believe your ball to be lost, play a provisional in the usual way.

You make sure you keep a good hold on that tiger

Here's a video with a clear presentation of some of the other rules - worth a look.

Now to the results. Congratulations to Thomas, who managed to pick up the Golden Hole.

And an outstanding round from today's winner. Absolutely no doubt about who gets the trophy - interestingly, the same person who picked it up last year.

Congratulations Keith, a phenomenal round. Whatever you're taking, hand some of it around. And thank you to Peter for his generous sponsorship - it's very much appreciated.

Next week, Stableford on the Old Course. Brenda Jones has very kindly offered to sponsor, although she is no longer playing with SOS. She sends her best wishes to all her old friends. (Not necessarily the old friends, just the friends she used to have)
