BLIND STABLEFORD PAIRS

We were supposed to play with our eyes closed?

No, not really, although some of our scores suggested that’s exactly how we played.

So which course are we on today?

The idea is your Stableford score is added to that of another player, but you don’t know to whose until after the round!

Some embarrassing pairings resulted, but more of that later.

We played on the Tuart.

Waiting for the blokes on the seventeenth

A strange day, warm, even hot at times, but also wet with showers, and a cool breeze to precede the showers.

We shook the moths out of our umbrellas

It wasn’t unusual to have the umbrella out twice on the same hole, once for the sun, and once for the rain.

We welcomed a couple of guests, Alex Mancini who submitted his third card, and Jos Lankester who popped in his second. If you didn’t get a chance to introduce yourself, here they are.

Alex on the left, Jos on the right.

The novelties were ably managed by Lynley, who even managed to get her name on one of them, in spite of our efforts to fail to put out the marker for the longest drive.

On number 4, nearest the pin in 3 (phew, that long par 5) Alex got his name on the card, and there it stayed.

Kerry gives it a whack

The Golden Hole on the 6th remained unclaimed, and jackpots to $86.

Gim finds the figs

The Ladies’ longest drive on the 8th went to Lynley, a monster drive straight down the middle, as is her wont.

Wayne unleashes on the fourth

Nearest in 2 on the 10th, first to Frances, then Gerry, but Mark Wilson was having none of it and got inside both efforts.

Ooh, bit of a fine there
Gerry's buggy runs off the second green across the third tee
and into the bush

The Men’s longest drive on the 17th saw a great effort by Wayne, but Gardy went further.

And nearest on the 18th, all three of the first group made the green, and it required a pace out to determine the closest, but Roland just pipped Wayne for the chocolates.

Roland on his way to a winning score?

The 18th also saw Karl awarded the Kangaroo Award - his first drive hit the path and bounced right into the putting area - his next effort also struck the path, and this time reached the children’s playground.

Bounce of the week there, Karl.

Gim looking after those feet

Fines and Raffle earnings are  going to the Charlie’s Angels charity again this week. Members reached deeply into their pockets, contributing well over $150 in fines.

Generous donations

This means over the two weeks, that SOS will be able to contribute $600. Thank you to all concerned for your generosity.

They're back

There were birdies, but not much of a flock.

The ladies finish the eighteenth.
Let's head for the bar

Roland on the 18th, and Glenn Kelly on the 11th and 16th. Well done, those players.

Gerry played with a full set this week. Still got a better score when he played with four clubs!

Andrea celebrated her anniversaire this week. That’s Penblwydd Hapus from all of us!

And a special shout out to Lynne, who's bravely going through some punishing rounds of treatment at the moment - our thoughts are with you, and we're looking forward to seeing you back.

For those interested in the individual scores - this is how they panned out.

But for the pairs competition, it was extremely competitive

There was a tie for the lollies, and a tie for the winning pair as well.

Down there somewhere

A countback to the last nine holes still saw the winners tied, so it had to go to the last three holes to determine a winning pair.

Congratulations to Roland and Birgit - a couple of very tidy rounds there, and commiserations to Wayne and Gerry, who just missed out.

Meanwhile next week, it’s Irish Stableford, to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. We play individual Stableford in teams of 4. On holes 1-5 count just one score for your team, on holes 6-10 count the better two scores. On holes 11-15 count three scores, then on 16, 17, 18 the sum of all four scores.

You are expected to make at least some effort to wear green - there’ll be a $10 voucher for the greenest.

And here's a course you might want to try sometime:

TUART STABLEFORD

A forecast high of 29 degrees combined with a very civilised tee time of 8.44 saw a big field tee up for the stableford competition on the Tuart course.

Gerry was in for a surprise when he opened the cover to his golf bag to discover just 4 clubs inside, a putter and 3 others. However, as you will discover when we get to the scores for the day he played pretty well without the other 10 clubs. In fact he is seriously considering putting the other 10 Pings up for sale on eBay for $500. Anyone interested?

Oh No!!!

As usual their was a fair degree of nervous tension on the first and we saw many balls head towards the driving range fence where numerous children were seen earning a bit of pocket money, bless them.

If only we could be as relaxed as some of the great golfers of the past.

The epitome of relaxation

Garry was back from touring the country and was first to tee off

Spots of Bovver

We had a spattering of spots of bovver

Earle's sentiments as he was confronted with the following

Well, almost hit the fairway.

Not to be outdone Gardy reintroduced his now famous exit strategy from blackboys, the putter

Despite the mild weather forecast of just 29 degrees it seemed a lot hotter and this was reflected in the scores, apart from Mark W's great round of just 3 over par off the stick!!

Results

Reading of the results

The Winners

First - Mark Wilson with a spectacular score of 73 off the stick for a net 37 - well done.
Second - Glen Pope first round back from a back injury score of net 35.
Third - Greg Bennett with a very respectable net 34.

Carol took home the lollies and it was also welcome back to Carol on the "Wheel of Fortune", well 5 bucks at least.
Some of us missed the squealing pig but that soon past as Carol demonstrated true professionalism on the wheel

Presidents Update

Gerry showed an example of our new club shirt, which most seemed suitably impressed with and Shelly attempted to tidy up the list of those that had requested a shirt/shirts and their size choice. Prior to lodging the final order Shelly will circulate a list that everyone should read carefully and advise her of any errors.

Fundraiser for Charlies Angels Foundation

Glen provided a brief summary of how the foundation came into existence and the the work it does to help grieving families.
We are pleased to inform all that the raffle raised $68 and the Ash Tray $148.75 for a total of $216.75 for the foundation. Next week all proceeds from the raffle and ash tray will again be donated to the foundation so lets see if we can out do yesterdays result.

Get Well Earle - We want to see you back soon in a chariot

Unfortunately the higher than forecast maximum took its toll with Earle who suffered heat exhaustion and after some very professional nursing care from Stephanie was taken to Sir Charles Gardner hospital for follow up assessment.

The trooper that Earle is sent me a text after I enquired about his well being through Vicki.

Next Saturday

It's back to the Tuart for another round of stableford and the competition will be "Blind Pairs".
Tee off its at 8.20, again a decent time that allows for a proper breakfast to be had.
The forecast at this stage is 28 degrees but that could vary, and if it gets hotter please consider using a cart and bring plenty of cold water
In Andrea's absence I will be captain next Saturday so hold onto your hats as anything could happen. Lynley will act as vice captain and decide the novelties and read at the results after the match.
I'm not sure if the squealing pig will be gracing us with its dulcet tones next week?

I'll leave you with this thought
