MatchPlay round 1

Might have to warn ya,,,, this is quite a long one (ooooe--er) as i have sooo much info, one blog wont cut it!

I did invite a good mate to play, Phil the guava Wear, and he turned up on time,,, most unlike him,,,,, it must've been a tough night as a professional gambler and pool player, as he got out of his car,,,
and said:-

'fook, i've forgotten my trolley,
ahhh fook, i've forgotten my clubs'

so threw his money in, turned around, then went home.

Must've been a good night on the tables hehehhe
luv ya work Legend.

How good is golf!

As guest blogger i'm gonna start with the beautiful fact that it is indeed an honour to fill in for the WeatherMan.

what a great day for it!

he had clearly seen the storm that was about to happen, and by using his Crystal Ball he declared himself unavailable by not paying in time!

Note to all:- make sure you pay in time, or your Saturday will be filled with mindless drudgery, rather than swearing at a golf ball that doesn't obey.

Mmmmm tough choice eh?

At this point i should mention there are a couple of B-Days to announce:-

Malcolm test pilot Yeo just beat Greg down the middle Bennett  to a b-day, which i'm told brings much amusement,,,
all i heard was :-

'you old carnt, 2 days is a lifetime'
To Malcolm Test Pilot Yeo, and Greg Down the Middle Bennett

On my front, Happy B-day to you both,,, and well played!

so what else has been going on,,,

well Kerry wifey Gardner has been knitting like a machine. When Iso kicked in, and she wasn't allowed back to Blighty to see her gorgeous grandson Flynn, she began to knit.
And knitt she has done,,,, almost non-stop for the last month.

The Beanies are on order and available upon request.....

Blatent Plug
if anybody needs any sanitiser, i'm ya man!
Please tell ya mates, business associates, basically anyone ,,, hehehhhe

Fines
Thankfully most of it has been lifted, but my favourite has been the look on Wifeys face (after 2 weeks of iso ) when she could finally get to the charity shops. The Salvos have a reprieve!

Under much discussion, not really, but because it was my idea there's gonna be a revision of the fines.
Anybody caught mentioning will be fined heavily:-

  • Isolation
  • Unprecedented
  • Covid
  • Social Distancing
  • Can i hug ya?
  • borders

Ashes
Not that many of you know, but the Ashes are still a relevant competition.
After losing the Ashes in 2019, the Poms bounced back and won the first Test in 2020, before the Beer Virus hit!
Glen has played some quality in the interim ,hence the 6 handicap, but to no avail, as we've not fkn won,,,, argghhh

so the Poms are one down in 2020 with revised Tests to be confirmed.

Iso
please tell me ya weirdest/best Iso stories,,,

we already have painter/decorator Brett Splash me with paint Fordham being helped by Barry dont electrocute me Treak.

I've also heard there was some dissension in the ranks about the handicaps?

Brett El Presdidente Fordham, (you've got to get a grip son heheheh) ,,,
delegated the role of handicap officer (not really, but dictated) to,,,,

Thankfully Stiff the blonde one Jeffares, stood up, got counted, and put her hand up.

Only to once given the task of recording such an important and emotional thing, under advisement from Wifey the scores were logged, though never informed of the true protocol to print off the updated handicaps.
But alas on Saturday morning there were many enquiries/statements/whinges' etc.....
who thought an Aussie would whinge hehehheh

Anyway, after the announcement of the new rules by Gary so broken Burgess we played was it loosely called golf.

Next week we see the return of the Novelties

Plus its the first round of the Club Championship, so $45 to Glen the bookie Pope.

Soon, it'll be back to normal,,,, though i vote for returning to Perry Lakes after each round,,,, but i'm happy to be out-voted,, as the Guinness is pretty good at Wembley.

  • more club funds
  • cheaper beer
  • sausage sizzle

worst raffle in the world ever,,,, T-dog James,,,

plus he had the most unfortunate event today,,, he hit a bird (not abuse), injured the poor duck's leg, then deflected into the water,,, Karma??? mmm i'll let buddha decide that.

Glen James Bond Pope takes a call

Suppose i best put the results in:-

Shelley  v Paul 2&1
Brett Stiff 4&3
Barry v Gary 4&3
TJ v Earl 2 up
Bernie v Fran 4&3
Kerry v Glen 7&6
Rich O Gooch 1 up
Greg Derek 2 up

so sweet, bday luv.

Its my birfday it has! if i said its gone 250m, it has.

SOS GOLF 16 May 2020 - Opening Day & Perry Lakes Cup

OPENING DAY

Wembley Golf course reopened today for club players after 7 weeks of enforced closure while the global COVID-19 pandemic wrecked havoc throughout the world!

Sandgropers can feel very fortunate to have been only mildly affected by this contagion compared with many other parts of the world!  Living in one of the most isolated cities in the world obviously has its benefits.

THE PERRY LAKE CUP

An early start scheduled for 8.20am got stretched out to nearer our normal tee off time, providing plenty of opportunity for players to catch up on what they had got up to during the long break!

It was a cool morning with light wind and a slight smoke haze from surrounding burn-offs.

Greg surveys the smoke shrouded 1st tee.

Are we socially distanced?

Derek & Tom ready to rumble !

Fancy footwork practice from our fashion royalty!

Thankful even for a 'wipe' !

The practical golfer

The ball in the right foreground, slightly obscured by smoke, was hit by Paul
who can just be seen in the middle distance. Nice shot Paul!

Grouping in practice !

Social distancing was the name of the game at Perry Lakes as most players made it for the awards ceremony and Ash tray collection.

A different group !

President Brett addresses the players at Perry Lakes while Captain Gary checks the scores

Congratulations go to Kerry for winning the Perry Lakes Cup for 2020 with a very commendable 40 stapleford points. Brett came in 2nd place with 38 points and 2 birdies, narrowly eclipsing Richard Osborne, also on 38.

THE ASH TRAY COLLECTION

The plastic bucket appeared to receive a goodly amount of coins (and a few notes) as players bared their souls for a wide range of erratic and ill judged play.

Moments after winning her cup, Kerry had turned it into a wine cooler !

NEXT WEEK

The 1st round of the Match Play competition will be held on 23 May 2020 and will be played on the Tuart Course.  The 2nd and 3rd rounds are on 13 and 27 June respectively.

BIRTHDAYS

Congratulations to Tony James who's birthday is on Tuesday, 19 May!

SOS GOLF - 9 MAY 2020

One week to go . . . . until SOS Golf Group

is once again able to tee off at our beloved Wembley golf course !

Now is the time to brush up on Golf 101 and to dust off your golf kit!

Golf 101 . . . remember?

During the 55 days of enforced hibernation we have been forced to cancel:

  -  Open Day / Perry Lakes Cup (28 March)
  -  Ladies Day (4 April)
  -  Easter Cup (11 April)
  -  Round 1 of the Club Championship (18 April) re-scheduled for 30 May
  -  Fellowship Day with the Blind Golfers Association (25 April)
  -  Par on the Tuart (2 May)
  -  Stapleford on the Old (9 May)

However, the new fixtures list kicks off next Saturday, 16 May, with a round of stapleford on the Old Course.

Resumption of play

Glen reports that 24 intrepid players have so far signed up to tee off on this historic occasion which, I presume, many will consider as a 'warm-up' before the 1st round of match play which is played the following week!

How many will be able to match their last handicap?

While some have apparently been out there pounding the fairways on a regular basis, others will have not lifted a club, so there should be an interesting range of scores!

Anyone you know ?

Who was it who observed :

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated;
it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect.
It is at the same time rewarding and maddening -
and is without doubt the greatest game
mankind ever invented.

COVID-19 precautions

Please be sure that you read up on the latest social distancing practices and rules of play at the Wembley Course before you get there. The list of player groups will be sent out during the week which will show individual start times.  Course management requires each group of 4 players to tee off separately, with the next foursome remaining well clear of the tee area.

The WA government's current rules for social groups allows up to 10 people to congregate, but each person in that group must maintain social distancing from one another.  On 18 May the number will be increased to 20 persons in a social group.

So, for the event on 16 May the committee suggests that club members congregate in groups of no more than 8 persons and that each group maintains a distance of 8 or so metres so as to clearly define each group. This applies at both the course and at Perry Lakes. Common sense must apply to ensure the rules are not abused!

Perry Lakes public enemy No. 1

Perry Lakes post match

If you wish to join the post match review, please proceed to Perry Lakes after completing your round and it is suggested that we arrange ourselves into 3 or 4 separate groups.

Please bring your own food and drink as well as sufficient coins for the Ash Tray & Raffle.

Also, Shelley will have some beers, wines and soft drinks for sale at $2 to $3 each. Help yourself one at a time.

A container of hand sanitizer and a box of gloves should be available.

If you have any to spare . . bring it along  to share ?

Birthdays

There are no birthdays to celebrate this week!

It's mine !!   All mine!

It might be a good idea to bring your own roll!

SOS Golf - 2 May 2020

IS THERE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL ?

This weekend marks the 6th week of  deferred play at the Wembley golf course for SOS members due to the COVID-19 virus.

However, there is now light to be seen at the end of this dark chapter of the club's history!

Indeed, celebrations are in order as we report that the Wembley Pro Shop has invited SOS to submit a new fixtures list for 2020 commencing on Saturday, 16 May 2020.

That is less than 2 weeks away !

With WA's excellent record to-date of containing the spread of the COVID-19 virus the Federal and State governments have been slowly easing the restrictions, including on golf play.  There will continue to be social distancing and many other restrictions for on-course behavior, but groups of 4 are now being permitted.

Sneezing into ones elbow is still mandatory!

No more absurd backyard practice sessions !

The revised fixtures list, which has now been circulated to all members by Glen, was approved by your committee at a meeting on Sunday afternoon.  The committee also decided on how the SOS members might meet after the game in order to practice a semblance of our post round rituals.

Please note that the re-opening of the golf course for groups of 4, and the Pro Shop's accommodation of social golf groups, comes with a strict set of rules which SOS members must follow. Many of the rules are listed below. In particular, the timing of payment of course fees has changed considerably to avoid cash handling! Please read Glen's email carefully if you wish to apply for a SOS booking.

The committee noted that it will be a delicate balance between observing the Government and Town of Cambridge rules, including practices that individual members may wish to follow, and trying to re-establish the SOS social spirit!   Accordingly, the arrangements set out below may be changed if found to clash with best practice social distancing or similar issues.

Composing this long blog !

But First . . . . a Message from Wembley Pro Shop

The committee received the following advice from Jason Roach, Operations Manager, on 26 April 2020.

"We have some better news! J

The WA government has today relaxed social distancing restrictions somewhat to allow up to 10 people per gathering. From tomorrow 27th April 2020 the Wembley Golf Course will allow groups of 4 players in each tee time.  The timesheets in future have been adjusted to accommodate more players on both the Old and Tuart courses.  Greens renovations will begin on the Tuart course from Tuesday 28th April 2020.

Social gatherings are strictly limited to 10 People which the WGC staff will be monitoring to ensure social distancing is adhered to.  Timesheets are currently open 11 days in advance which are quite full already (will change as they are now groups of 4) however will be available for all social golf club bookings from Sunday 10th May 2020 onwards once I get back to work this Tuesday 28/4/2020.  Motorised carts will also remain as one person and one bag per cart.

 • Online golf bookings only (no walk-ins accepted)
• Groups of 2 players per tee time (8 minute intervals) [now 4 players & longer intervals]
• Tap & Go payments only (cash will not be accepted) [ie for $5 players card]
• 4 customers in the pro shop at any one time
• Social distancing to be practised at all times
• One person per golf cart 18 holes $30 - 9 holes $20
• No hire clubs available
• Gates open 6:30am – Gates close 6:15pm
• Please arrive just prior (15mins) to your tee time
• No gatherings permitted prior to or after play
• No competitions will be administered [will commence from Sunday 10 May]
• Golf Carts will be sanitised before and after use."

Post Game Activity

The Committee has recommended :

Novelties - not to be used for initial rounds, but 'see how it goes' and reconsider.

Post game -  when each group of players completes their round* they proceed to the Perry Lakes BBQ area where groups of  up to 10 can congregate while maintaining social distancing rules.

* first process score cards if Pro Shop are accepting them.

Fines - a large bucket can be used to collect coins thrown by players who have transgressed.

Raffle - a contactless system is being devised including a random number generator to replace the balls and raffle wheel!

Food & Drink - It is suggested that members bring their own food and drink.  Shelley may also have a quantity of beer available, at cost.

Birthdays

And a Happy Birthday to Richard Yeo for 3 May.

Oh Joy !!  Time to play again !

Book early to avoid disappointment.

SOS has been allocated a set number of bookings and Glen is no longer able to work his magic!
