Winter Cup Round 1

Very kindly sponsored by DJ, who appeared out of almost nowhere to descend amongst us.

Peter The WeatherMan as normal consulted the radars and correctly stated we were in for a beautiful Winters' Day with scattered showers, which were due to clear up after lunch.

And yet again he was correct, faith has certainly been restored in his accurate predictions.

Much in keeping with the weather, the Birffffday Boy, Derek was looking very dapper in his cravat.
Points for Golfing Style, Glen???

Anyway enough of the pre-amble, lets get to the important stuff:-

Golden Hole
Although the par 3's were attacked well today (especially by myself hehehe), the Golden Hole wasn't won so the funds have Jackpotted to $77!

Ashes Update
Well as expected at The Home of Cricket, the Aussies finally showed up & the English crumbled with normal service being restored, on what has to be said was a pretty ordinary pitch!
So that's one 'stuffing' each,  what will the next Test bring?

The Boulevard
I don't know about anybody else but i would like to applaud Shelley for booking the tables at The Boulevard in Floreat.
A cracking venue with good beer and food.

Thanks Shelley, and i for one certainly look forward to being back there next week.

New Shirts
Unfortunately due to alleged flight delays out of Kalgoorlie we weren't able to pick up the new shirts from Brett, so we'll have to wait until next week to don our new gear.

I do though have my doubts about his excuse, as the jungle drums were beating that he was last seen at the following establishment

Fine of the Week
As usual there were many candidates for this very prodigious one including:-

Vickie trying to hit her Tee shot twice
Paul & Vickies shanks
Dummy spits by both Deano & myself
Colin and his 'ball-lickers'

but the winner has to go to,,,,,,,,, drum roll please,,,,,
Mr Roland Stanger

For his impression of a JCB digger after taking 8,,, yes 8, in a bunker!!
top work for carrying on mate, where many of us may not have.

Random Pics
Apologies for the quality of the pics this week as my phone got a little bit damp

MatchPlay Semis & 4BBB stableford

Very kindly sponsored by Steve & Nola DeSantis.

After my last weekends debacle I was looking forward to a beautiful day of some wondrous golf.
Peter Baird aka The WeatherMan had assured me that this was to be a fine sunny winters day, and low and behold he was correct!
Good on ya Pete.

As we assembled for the Tee-Off unfortunately we were delayed a tad as the society group before us had smuggled in a couple of other players, something which we have done ourselves on occasion in the past,,, so lets not stress about this as the following is quite apt:-

It did actually provide some of us some time to consider our upcoming games and a chance for the ladies to catch up on some gossip.

Ladies that lunch

Last minute practise

At this point I should welcome my guest, Dean Palmer, who once introduced was bombarded by misinformation and slanderous comments about me by various members (you know who you are!!!)*.

Ignore what they say about me, they tell lies!
* too many to name

I would like to state that the majority of the comments are indeed false, and that Dean knows me well enough to sift through the BS,,, hehehehehe

Who knew that Dean was part of the latest Chick Flick,,,,,,

"Magic Dean,, Wiry & Strong"

Ashes Update
The first part of the sprinkler is in place, as England comprehensively out-played the Aussies in every department.
I'n sure however that they will bounce back strongly at the home of cricket, Lords, on Thursday.

Let the fantastic entertainment continue!

But Rob was VERY sincere in his speech, I promise x

Play of the Day
The Play of the Day I'm afraid has to go to the well deserving multi-talented acrobat, Peter Baird.
Not only is he The WeatherMan but he has shown he can certainly throw some moves.
In his eagerness to present the Raffle Prize his chair got caught up and he fell "A over T" onto the floor, albeit in fantastic slow motion.

Fortunately our esteemed Treasurer was unhurt, as due to the thousands of hours of acrobatic training he has learned how to fall!

Xmas in July
As mentioned in the announcements, Earle  & Vickie have kindly loaned their house for our Xmas in July that is to be held on the 1st August,,,,, yes I know!!!!!!!!

If you wish to come along and enjoy the wintery festivities, some fine food, a "Queens Speech", and other random activities please let Brett know asap so we can gauge numbers.

MatchPlay QuarterFinals and 4BBB

Well hi there guys & girls of the illustrious SOS Golf Society, and firstly don't expect much from this weeks blog due to me missing my game after being stuck in Melbourne.

As you all will know those lovely people at Virgin Australia,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

decided to muck me (and 300 others) around by firstly delaying our flight from an original time of 6pm,,,, keeping our hopes going by stating:-

"But sir the flight will go tonight, I promise!"

All other flights by all other carriers were full by 7pm!

until finally cancelling the flight at 11pm, and then taking another hour or so to get us to a hotel with a measly $50 drink and meal voucher.

The Bosch Boys enjoying a beverage

However I must applaud the poor groundstaff who dealt with some very angry and grumpy Saffers, who were going to miss their connections in order to get back to SA.

Though I'm sure that if Richard Branson had employed the people below, especially in the cold of Melbourne there would've been a lot more smiles!

Ironically his shirt says "now boarding!"

I finally got through the door at 2pm Saturday, so I missed all the action and therefore have nothing to report.
Admittedly Kerry did take some pics but I haven't seen them yet, so they'll be saved for next week!

Novelties
Sorry not a clue but i do hear on the jungle-drums that Derek won 2 balls.
Make sure you use them wisely D-man.

MatchPlay Results
Again not sure,

The Rest Results
All I know is Kerry was very happy with hers and Dave Williamson's result

Golden Hole
The monies haven't gone off so a massive ~$25 in both the Tuart and Old Course funds.
I reckon we leave it for a few weeks before anybody attempts to win it again.
What do you think peeps?

It's Ashes Time
Who thought you could get away without your Pommie Author mentioning the upcoming Ashes starting tonight, in fact as I write this!
The series will be a lot closer that a lot of people think, and if it isn't I will indeed eat my words.
For those few Aussies who took the bets, good luck, and let's have a cracking series.

For the English amongst us,,,,, C'Mon England,,,, let's see this again!

Next Week
Semi-finals of the MatchPlay event, and for us lucky losers 4BBB stableford

After Match Venue
Due to the inhospitable weather, lack of cover etc we are looking at other options to congregate after the game, though I do believe there is another option to look at at Wembley Golf Club,,,

watch this space!

MatchPlay round 3

Here we go for the third instalment of the MatchPlay for SOS!

However, before I begin I must offer a retraction of previous scurrilous comments about the Meteorologist Peter Baird.
I apologise for comparing his comments of "it's never going to rain" to the inept forecasting of Michael Fish back in the 1980's, something which I believe has hurt him deeply.

So onwards for the weather report for Saturday the 27th June for the full field that took part,,,, it was a very fine winters day peaking at ~21degs after a dewy morning, something that many an English summer would be proud!

The controversy began early as Graeme 'cried off' at the last minute, leaving me partner-less and expecting a 'bye' and therefore an easy 2 points.
However the RulesMeister and Referee had different ideas.

Eventually it was decided that I was to play Bruce, after he was passed around and rejected by firstly Gim then Travis.

As predicted by both Bruce & myself we were in for an epic round, which was to be decided on the 18th where the deadlock was ended with a beautiful 'chip-in' by Bruce!
Top shot sir!!!!

The sledges and fight talking were rife throughout the morning group as they waited to commence the battle.
It was even overheard that Lynne tried to bribe Gordon for a 10&8 victory to guarantee her progression into the quarter finals.

Apparently bribery and corruption does work!! hehehehe

And then there was the pent up anger from Vickie.
