Club Championship Round 6

The weather forecast was for 1-3mm of rain and some wind! For the first half of the game there was persistent rain showers accompanied by ferocious wind gusts providing a wind chill factor close to freezing! Many with 3 layers of clothing wished they had 4 !  However, on the second half the situation moderated a bit with a few infrequent glimpses of the sun.

The forecast did not stop 25 SOS members from assembling for the 6th round of the Club Championship competition played on the Old Course.

Fairways & Greens

Only one photo of action on the fairways & greens, so what better than to start the blog with a soothing poem supplied by Keith?

                       Golf Poem

In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, And  Rather Small.
Oh, How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.

By Its Size I Could Not Guess
The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I've Wandered  Through The Fires Of Hell.

My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End;
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.

It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry,
And Hate Myself And Want To  Die.
It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,
If I Hit It Straight  And Hit It Far.

To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be  Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does  Exactly As It Chooses.

It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.

With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.

It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It  Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball Knows  ... I'll Be Back Tomorrow.

Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs

And losers of balls!

Another of Keith's contributions from the UK

A recent study found that the average golfer
Walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found that golfers drink, on
Average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.

This means that, on average, golfers get about
41 miles to the gallon!

Kind of makes you proud.

Almost makes you Feel like a hybrid !

Gerry's drive on the 15th saved by the rake!!

A bad rake placement!!
Not sure who should be fined, the rake placer or Gerry?

Can any inference be drawn from the fact the two match play finalists are separated this week by 15 points? Perhaps Barry has peaked too early or Michael has lulled his opponent into a false sense of destiny?!

 Eagles & Birdies

A long time since someone scored an Eagle however, there were 7 birdies scored by 5 players which is not too bad considering the weather!

Golden Hole

With the strong wind gusting right to left over the fairway on the 15th it was always going to be a miracle if anyone got close to the pin! No miracles occurred and the jackpot accumulates to around $175.  The Tuart Course jackpot stands at $116.

Novelties

The large black Novelty Markers have been replaced by sleek pointy ones with a golf ball crowning the top! Very snappy design and less likely to cause injury . . can we thank Tony Gooch?

Evidently Vickie, Shelley and Frances all missed the fairway on the 7th hole allowing Lynne M, in the 5th grouping, to snatch the Longest Drive unopposed!

Congratulations to Colin, who is just back from surgery, for taking out the longest drive!

Conspicuous by his absence is Tony Gooch, who was in Group 1.

Ash Tray Collection

Michael Curtis had the honor of coming last, although both Mitchell S & Mark H also scored 85!

Members dutifully donated to the Ash Tray fund with the adverse weather creating an additional level of difficulty and opportunity to run foul of the list of fineable events!  Glen Pope lost control of his equipment before he even got to the 1st tee!

At least the post match session was held inside!

Next Week

September 10th will see the Match Play final take place on the Tuart Course. Best of luck to both Michael Curtis and Barry Treak the SOS Match Play finalists for 2022!

While Michael & Barry will be concentrating on their opponents shots, the rest of the members will play a 2-person blind draw stableford handicap event! At the end of the round the Captain will conduct a blind draw to determine who will be your partner. Then, the stableford points of each partner will be added together to determine the overall winner. A prize will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd best teams.
