SOS Summer Cup Round 1

Another magnificent day for golf, clear blue skies, a bit of a breeze and low 30's.

It was, however, humid! Perhaps that was the problem as many players found frequent despair when driving, chipping and putting their ball! Indeed, many found it difficult to comprehend how they managed to blow their handicap so comprehensively!  Perhaps it was the unaccustomed pressure of a stroke competition which allows for no leeway on all 18 holes!

Presidents Message & Birthdays

The President opened the post game meeting by announcing that no members had celebrated a birthday this week!

Brett also noted the players list for today was one short of a full card as Wembley Golf allocate 28 places each week for SOS and we managed to field a near record 27 players!

Brett advised that a group photograph is planned to be taken prior to the game next week which will require members to get to the course earlier than normal. Further details are provided toward the end of the blog.

Brett advised that Tony and Anne James have kindly agreed to host next week's Summer Cup awards ceremony which will be held immediately after the game at their Lissadell Street residence, a few streets east of The Floreat Forum. Ask if unsure of the number. The event will include a sausage sizzle and some drinks, but bringing a bottle of your preferred beverage may avoid disappointment.

The Results - Round 1 Summer Cup

For the second week in a row the Club Captain, Gary Burgess, had to declare himself the winner with a very respectable score of 69!

Gary trying to look modest!

Maureen and Colin, who scored 70 and 71 respectively, came in 2nd and 3rd, but were unable to collect their prizes as they had left immediately after the game to attend other commitments.

Only one on the podium!

So no photos of Maureen and Colin collecting their gift cards and receiving the adulation of members!

James Weaver made a return to the SOS players list after more than a few absences and did well to also score 71 points and 4th place in a count back from Colin.

Round 2 of the Summer Cup next week. Lowest aggregate score wins!

Novelties

Maureen's disciplined golf swing and concentration impressed those in her group.
It enabled her to pick up half of the novelty prizes and could easily have enabled her to take 1st place had her putting not let her down on more than one occasion!

Congratulations also to Gerry for making the longest drive and to Glenn for demonstrating the uphill par 3 is not so difficult!

Golden Hole

Again, the Old Course jackpot rolls over to a larger sum!

Birdies and Eagles

No reported eagles and only two birdies notwithstanding a near record turnout of 27 players!

Congratulations to Gary and Maureen for showing it can be done and that birdies help in the placings!

Ash Tray Collection

Derek had the misfortune to collect the lollies but gave a spirited display in presenting the list of fines and extracting a goodly pile of coins (& a note) from members. It also prompted a record number of players to 'fine myself' for a variety of bewildering behavior.

The Raffle

Welcome back to James who managed to take out the raffle's 1st prize as well as one of the balls!

Next Week

The second and final round of the Summer Cup stroke competition will be played on the Tuart Course. The winner will have the lowest aggregate score over the two rounds.

To be followed by a sausage sizzle at the Tony James residence in Floreat.

SOS Group Photograph

It has been many years since we have been able to take a group photograph. This is about to change.

Only 3 remain today of the 33 members pictured above in 2003 !

We have engaged a celebrity photographer to capture the friendly and engaging nature of this unique group.

Before the game this coming week we will assemble at the Lakeside Pavilion, opposite the practice bunkers and chipping green on the way to the Tuart tenth tee. Glen will advise us of the time when he issues the weekly playing sheet.

Please wear your SOS shirt, and if possible, dark pants. And bring your best smile.

Lockdown for Golfers

Try some of these amazing golf shots!
