Just like last week, but without the wind! Beautiful weather in the mid 20's, blue skies with the odd cloud about !
And back to the Old Course for the first time in many weeks to contest the Anniversary Cup, a stroke event, making scoring a lot less challenging!
Gary, Keith and Derek ready to meet the challenge !
Glen, Vickie and Earle sporting a diverse wardrobe !
The Anniversary Cup
For the benefit of recent members to SOS who may not know the origin of the Anniversary Cup, Honorary Life Member Colin Kerr advised, that "Lloyd Taylor was the founder who after playing with three
friends for a while, another four joined them and SOS was formed."
While records from the 1970's are possibly lost, a copy of the 2004 Season Results has survived which includes a listing of the SOS President and Captain, as well as the trophy winners, from 1972 to 2004.
Indeed, 1972 seems to be year of formation of SOS with Lloyd Taylor as President and R Fraser as Captain.
In 1973 the Champion, SOS Cup and Summer Cup trophies were first awarded. Colin Kerr was one of the first to join and is shown as the winner of the Summer Cup in 1975. In 1976 two more trophies were issued, the Match Play and Presidents Trophy.
The Winter Cup was first issued in 1982!
However, the Anniversary Cup was not awarded until 1985, when it was won by V Quinlan.
No doubt, the Anniversary Cup was issued to celebrate the club's formation in 1972, now some 48 years ago!
Not long before the Committee will need to plan for the 'Golden Year' !
Post Match Revelry
In the absence of President, Brett Fordham, our Treasurer, Shelley Yeo called the meeting to order and announced that the 2020 Christmas Cheer event would be held on Saturday, 19th December. Further details will be supplied to members and guests via email very shortly.
Shelley also advised that the Ash Tray collections during the the month of November had raised some $190 and the Committee had agreed to round up the amount to $200 and to donate that amount to The Honour Avenues Group who maintain all the Honour Plaques, posts and colour patches in the Honour Avenues in Kings Park.

Novelties
Again, the low handicappers win the novelty holes!
Golden Hole - the 16th
With a very modest $41 (approx.) prize pool no-one was able to claim the pot, although it seems Tony Gooch made a strong play, coming within less than a metre !
Raffle
Keith acted as raffle ball spinner and came up with a selection of numbers which generally confused the punters!
First prize of $10 went to Stephanie !
After several 'not out' draws there was consternation when Ball 57 was called, but not claimed. After some frantic searching by Shelley and Keith, the numbered disc was finally located in Greg Kelly's pile, much to everyone's relief!
Frantic searching for #57 underway ! |
Birthdays
Members present wished a happy birthday and good wishes to Gim who celebrated the event mid last week!
Memory Lane
Before the common use of blogging, in the early part of this century, SOS disseminated news to members on a monthly basis with the printed publication of "The SOS-Age". This was in the dark ages, circa 2000 - 2005, when women members had to use the Men's Index and Greg Bennett and Ross Campbell filled The SOS-Age with interesting and often salacious news and commentary!
Colin Kerr was 8 times Club Captain and 10 times Club Champion (and many other trophies)
Greg Bennett won the J. Munt Memorial in 1991 (and other trophies)
Richard Yeo won the Australia Day Cup in 1999 (and other trophies)
In 2010 the Centenary Cup was discontinued as the Committee at the time decided that playing for this cup, first issued in 1988, was now meaningless!
Next Week
A 4BBB stableford competition will be held on the Old Course.
