The Start
Eighteen members, plus one guest, fronted up for the 1st round
of the Club Championship held on the Tuart Course. Tee-off was
officially at a comfortable 9.00am, but was more like 9.15am, and the weather
was cool & cloudy. After a brief shower soon after setting off, the weather
cleared providing frequent short sunny periods. Some would say this was ideal
golfing conditions.
Standard score cards are still in use however, the Pro Shop will
re-introduce the electronic scoring system from early next week

Gary happy to see Kerry has the Novelty markers, which have not been used for several months! |
The Game
Recent heavy rain had slowed the pace considerably, both on the fairways
and greens. It would have been interesting to have recorded the number of short
chips and putts compared with going too long! At least, that is what occurred
in the bloggers group.
Derek's tee shot on the par 5, 4th hole, landed awkwardly! Using his putter to play a shot between his legs, Derek was able to find the middle of the fairway and resume his relentless quest for glory! |
There seemed to be a lot of wildlife on the course today, particularly
ducks on the greens. There was only one reported case of wildlife abuse today -
was it Gim who injured a duck's leg? Given the standard of play by several members, it was
surprising there were no more casualties, particularly from the blogger who
send 2 'worm-burning' balls in succession into the lake from the 18th tee, narrowly missing ducks, waterhens and, probably, a few worms!
There were a lot of twigs and leaves on the
greens, fairways and bunkers ! |
The Sausage Sizzle
There was no sizzle to be had as the BBQ's were non-operational !
The day was saved by quick thinking Kerry who raced to the nearby
Floreat Forum and purchased cheese and ham to go with the bread rolls, salad
and par-fried onion.
Kerry then proceeded to make up a large number of rolls
which was rudely interrupted by a dive bombing Kookaburra.
Excellent work
Kerry!
The culprit
↓
As more birds encroached on our picnic table, including a large number
of magpies, Paul tried his best to discourage them, releasing a barrage of overarm
missiles at the feathered fiends which withdrew to a less vulnerable
distance!
The Bird Whisperer flexing his fingers before releasing another 'ball'! |
Kerry hard at work on the rolls |
The Results
Congratulations to Derek for a fine display of golf under pressure,
scoring a net 71 and taking an early lead in the Club Championship competition.
Derek Longhurst - only won by 2 strokes Could have been more if not for the tree on the 4th hole! |
Two shots behind was Tony Gooch and one more to Gim for 2nd and 3rd
places.
Tony Gooch - 2nd place |
Gim Ong - 3rd place |
Our guest player, James Weaver, carded a commendable gross 94 which will
count as his first card as he progresses toward membership.
The results were:

No contenders today? Three of the four winners were in the first group, which partly explains the result; but how did James win the longest drive when in the last group? Perhaps I did not hear Gary reading them out!
Stephanie advised how the Novelty Markers had been
improved over the long break by the substitution of the tethered pencil with a
particular type of biro containing a clip which could be secured to the hole in
the top of the marker. Anyone contemplating getting their name on the novelty
boards should take the opportunity to examine the operation of the clip so as
to avoid holding up play!
Mesmerizing ! |
The Ash Tray - Fines
Bank notes, gold coins and silver flew thick and fast as members coughed up their loose change to atone for their sins while on the course. Paul and Kerry took some time to reveal the basis of fining each other. Not sure which of the two won, but the Ash Tray surely did!
Kerry's petition to fine her husband appeared to have merit! |
Paul was not outdone in reply ! |
