OPENING DAY - CLOSING DAY

Nobody told me there'd be days like these - strange days indeed!

John Lennon had it right back in 1984 - if you haven't listened to it for a while, here's the video:

We were looking forward to welcoming the new committee for Opening Day, and instead, they've made it closing day.

Those were the days

Speaking of which, how many of us remember the delightful Mary Hopkin:

That's it for golf for quite a few weeks.

But there are precedents. Those of us who lived through the amazing winter of 1962 in the UK will remember how the football season closed down for months.

To enable the football pools to continue (basically, the way in which most of the UK bet on the results of matches each week), a pools panel was formulated to determine what the results of games would have been, had they actually been played.

I see no reason why we can't do this at SOS. To kick it off, here are the results of today's novelties.

Now we have a bit of spare time on our hands, let's reinstate the caption competition. Here's one from the past:

Let's have your answers by next Saturday to derekcva@gmail.com, or reply to your notification of the blog. Shelley permitting, there's a golf ball in it (although what you'll find to do with a golf ball is anyone's guess.)

How about "Gone With The Wind"?

And in the final results, I'm sure Steph just beat Tony on countback, both with 39 points. That one in the water on the eighteenth cost Tony the game, otherwise he had her beaten.

Peter Baird was a close third, after that I suggest we all give ourselves a tidy 36 points and conclude that we played to handicap, with a nice birdie somewhere around the middle of the course.

For those of you who've got a bit of space in the backyard, here's a thought:

At the moment, it's anyone's guess when we'll be able to get back to playing. Just make sure the moths don't get at those new shirts, and maybe use it as an opportunity to clean those clubs nicely and give them a light coat of WD40 so they don't get rusty before you put them away in the shed.

Do stay safe, we'll look forward to reassembling with a nice big field....sometime.

And in the meantime, get a tissue ready and watch this, courtesy of Keith:

Stableford and AGM

A fine Saturday, and good to be out on the course with our friends in the middle of difficult times.

There'll be challenges over the next few months, but let's hope that SOS will be something we'll all be able to keep enjoying.

We kept our social distance

Scores weren't too impressive, nothing to do with the conditions, which were near perfect.

Team Fordham perhaps had their minds on the big boys fishing trip. Have fun, guys.

Stephanie not only managed to lose control of her equipment

But it was only stopped by running up against her partner's ball

And congratulations to Tony James, who has joined SOS, having submitted three cards and being voted in by the committee.

Most of you have, I think, met Tony by now.

We then decamped to Perry Lakes for one of the year's highlights - the AGM!

Yes, I know, but we do have to have one.

Good to see Joy has taken over Greg's wardrobe. Looking good, Greg.

The most significant outcomes were that weekly prizes will now be $40, $10 and $5

Pants and shirts coordinating, very cool, sir

That the committee will try to get starting times half an hour earlier during the hot summer months

And that Vickie has been elected as an honour life member of SOS.  A great, and very rarely bestowed honour - congratulations, Vickie.

Our new committee will be as follows:

President - Brett
Captain - Gary
Vice-Captain - Stephanie
Treasurer - Shelley
Booking Officer - Glen
Social Organiser - Kerry
Communications Officer - Peter

We thank them all for volunteering their efforts. Most of us have served at one level or another, and we're well aware of the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes so that the rest of us can enjoy the seamless pleasures of just playing golf for a club.

We're lucky to have people like that in the club. Thank you again.

Got to be more careful...

For those of us (thinking of you, Dave) looking after grandkids at the moment, here's an interesting take on kid's menus.

Next week, it's Opening Day, Stableford on the Tuart. See you there.

I gather that nice Peter Baird's the guy to talk to if you want toilet rolls..
