STABLEFORD

The last game of the year, for all those of us who haven't retired to our country retreats for the post-Christmas lull.

Vickie tweets her thoughts on the game so far

Good to have Shelley and Malcolm back from their maritime excursion.

Greg prepares to play out of a mini-bunker on the 11th.

A few of us struggling to get into shirts and pants that seemed to have got smaller over the last few days.

Wish I'd read the article

Talking of shirts, have you all voted for your favourite shirt? Let me have your vote by email - just reply to the email that led you to this blog.

Bernie managed to pick up a speeding fine on the way to golf this morning. Bernie explained that she was in the first group, but apparently this wasn't sufficient to get her off the hook.

Should have burst into tears?

So, some reasonable scores, and a rather dog-eared copy of the rules was brought out to ascertain the countback process to determine the winner.

Congratulations, Greg. A great result to finish the year on.

And the bad news is that your annual subscription is now due - it's $130, to the SOS account. If you don't have the details, refer to Shelley. (Still much less than many comparable groups).

Next week, it's 2020, and the year begins with a competition for the New Year Cup - a stroke competition on the Tuart. Before that, you'll need to have worked on your New Year Resolutions.

Somewhat more seriously, there are some useful golfing ideas here that you may not have come across before:

GOLF SHIRTS

Two excellent designs, either of which will make the SOS Golf Group the envy of all at Wembley, but which do you prefer, #1 or #2?

Email please to soswembley@gmail.com, let's say by 5pm on Jan 4, so we can include the results in the blog for that day.

LONG DETAILED RATIONALE FOLLOWS. GET YOUR COFFEE FIRST.

The issue of shirts has proved to be a difficult one to resolve. The current shirts are no longer available, and the current supplier is unable to offer long and short sleeve options of the same design (unless it is plain white). An increasing number of players would prefer to have a long sleeved shirt available.

We must therefore choose a new shirt.

The shirt sub-committee (ie Gary and Derek) has visited the factory in Welshpool that produces shirts for a large number of local sports teams (including one of the other Saturday morning golf groups). These shirts are produced locally, not imported, and the process means we can have a more stylish and unique design, and are not limited to just an embroidered logo. Importantly, we can also produce long and short sleeved versions of the same shirt.

There is therefore an opportunity to come up with a design that is more distinctive and contemporary, whilst meeting the need to have long and short sleeved options available. Hurrah!

The fabric is polyester, which is almost universally used for sports clothing these days. It keeps the look and lasts much longer than cotton, whilst being very easy to wash and requiring no ironing. We have had discussions with their designer and come up with these design concepts.

The designs are attractive and distinctive, and have the benefit of a much stronger SOS branding than currently, which will help us raise our profile at Wembley, and be an important tool in attracting new members.

Once the final choice has been made, we will finesse the design details regarding exact placing, sizing and colouring of logotype, etc.

We have had a generous offer of sponsorship from the Lot Six Zero cafe group, and will include their logo in the final design, probably as a shoulder detail. This will mean that the cost of the shirts will be similar to the cost of the current ones.

So, can you let us know your personal preference, #1 or #2.

CHRISTMAS CUP

Christmas Cup and Christmas Cheer to follow.

How good is SOS!

Stephanie and Barry did a wonderful job of hosting the Christmas Cheer at their beautiful home. A great time was had by all, and our sincere thanks to both of you.

Who needs an angel on the tree when you've got Steph?

But first, we had to play golf.

Peter played the game of his life, and could still have won if he'd gone home after the fifteenth hole. Far more points than he needed to carry off the trophy, not to mention an eagle to put the icing on the cake.

In the hole!

A bit of a stumble from Wembley meant a last-minute change of venue to the Tuart, which rather threw those of us who'd spent the previous evening visualising our round, but that happens.

Peter lines up his eagle putt

Earle and Stephanie managed to get their names down on most of the novelties - could have something to do with being in the first group.

Your hard working committee have short-listed two concepts for the new SOS shirts, and now need input from the members for their preference -this will be the subject of a separate blog.

Next week, a Stableford competition on the Old Course, for those of us who haven't been overwhelmed by the festivities, and have completed our post-Christmas chores.

Now, just how is Christmas just like any other day at the office? You do a bunch of work and some fat guy in a suit gets all the credit.

Never mind. You were probably a kid yourself once. Scroll down to relive your experiences at the fabulous Christmas Cheer event, or get really jealous if you weren't there.

Thanks again, Steph and Barry. A great Christmas Cheer.
