SOS Club Championship - Round 5

SOS Club Championship - Round 5

A chill breeze greeted players at the 'tee off' on what was otherwise a glorious winter's day with blue skies and the odd white cloud.

Only 16 players today, all ready to nail a low scoring round to add to their Championship points.  What could go wrong?

There are two rounds remaining, 24 August and 21 September, before the SOS Club Champion is named!

Is it possible that Max has been taking lessons during the school holidays?

The cool weather fashion stakes?

Don's tee shot at the 6th hole was superb, landing just 20cm short of the pin. However, defying gravity, the ball lipped the cup leaving Don to record a par! How many of us have endured these mind bending moments, leaving us amazed and bewildered at nature's forces?

The computerised scoring machine experienced a few gremlins as it randomly rejected a number of cards. However, a Competition Report was finally produced for players who eagerly awaited news of their placings.

Magnificent efforts from Max and Stephanie

NB  The Bloggist was informed that Greg's DQ arose from losing two balls, one as the tee shot and the second a provisional; then failing to take a third shot in accordance with the rules.

Max receiving his winners voucher from Vice-Captain John Messenger.

The novelties had no contenders today . . . . only winners!  Shelley's second shot on hole 8 may have been the 'shot of the day' as it landed a club length from the hole, allowing her to finish it off with a birdie!!

Golf Trivia
Fore!: 200 years ago, golf balls were quite pricey, so an assistant called a "forecaddie" was used to work in front of a golfer and retrieve errant shots. Eventually the word's etymology diverged - the assistant simply became a caddie and the warning call became "fore!"

American Foursome

SOS - American Foursome -  6 July 2019

Fickle weather kept players guessing as sunshine greeted starters as they milled outside the pro shop for a delayed start!

Enough time for the booking officer to balance the till . . . .

 . . . . and a bit of a chat

However, by the time half of the SOS players had departed the rain started and it was a matter of retreating to the relative comfort of the pro shop awning!

For Group 5 it was 'umbrellas up' at the first tee.

Mercifully, the rain was light and short in duration, with very light winds providing optimal conditions for low scores.

The GOLDEN HOLE was won in convincing style by John whose ball landed 2 feet in front of the pin and rolled just past it!  John confided it was as close as he had got to a Hole in 1.

Blue skies and stripped to short sleeves by the 9th hole.

Teeing off at the 12th! With the pin located at the front of the green those with range finders should have had an advantage. No so the blog poster who, having ascertained the exact distance, executed a ferocious tee shot 'windy' moving the ball off the tee and rolling several centimeters, but not reaching the blue tee markers.  Oops!

The water hazard at the 14th hole has claimed many a ball but John, having inadvertently grounded his putter on a longish putt, expressed his frustration by drop kicking his putter which, instead of taking a vertical flight as intended, proceeded in a lateral direction into the water! The picture below shows Vickie and Paul supervising the recovery operation with John successfully using Peter's ball retrieving device.

The team results were hotly contested with Brett & Greg prevailing by an impressive 3.5 point margin!

At the post game venue the President welcomed Jason, a guest sponsored by Brett.
It was noted the venue had been moved outside to accommodate a child's birthday party!

The raffle, ably run today by Steff & Burnie, was won by Shelley!

President Derek advised that he would be absent for several weeks while he took an overseas vacation. He advised that Brett has agreed to stand in as interim President until he returned.

Also, Peter has agreed to take over the Blog for the time being.
