STABLEFORD

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....

A glorious autumn day at Royal Wembley, but for some unaccountable reason, the golf scores failed to live up to the promise of a golden afternoon.

And the WABGA (Blind Golfers Association) hadn’t managed to get their act together to join us for the annual Austin Cup extavaganza.

No problem - just watch me get out of this

Not to be deterred, we nevertheless encamped to Perry Lakes after the game for the scheduled barbecue, where we shared the space with a Little Athletics meet, but managed to keep both the little tackers and the kookaburras away from our sausages.

More of that later, first we had to play the game.

Earle gets in touch with his feminine side - and goes off the girls' tee.

Birgit entertained us with the story of how she had woken up at 3am Saturday morning to have a discussion with Gerry about their electricity bill,

Karl's in Finland - the land of the midnight sun

and Peter showed us the result of his visit to the barbers. Apparently he’d said “I found an old putter in the woodshed”, and the hairdresser, also somewhat hard of hearing, had heard “Make me look like a skinhead”.

Anyway, it will grow back. The hair, that is.

Earle was chalked in for a later fine, as apparently he’d repeatedly asked Vickie to find the house key, when he had it all the time in his pocket.

Vickie also instigated another fine, after Derek reminded her to send him the password to enter the club’s details into the Dept of Trade website, when she’d already sent it to him ten days ago. His claim that he’d been peeling leeches off his body while rescuing a friend from the swamp around Cooktown at the time he received the mail did not earn him a reprieve.

Keith announced the novelties, which were shared around as follows:

Men’s longest drive on the 14th, Keith, before Mark Wilson unleashed a monster over the trees to land in the middle of the fairway, within a putter’s length of the green.

yes, let's open another bottle

Ladies’ longest drive on the 10th, Vickie, outpointed by Lynne. Good to have you back.

Nearest the pin on the 2nd. Earle got on the card early, and wasn’t displaced.

Nearest in two on the 9th, Keith gets his name on it again, but this time Gerry got closer.

And finally, the longest putt on the 4th saw a number of candidates, with Earle on first, then Dave M. Lynne snuck in closer, (needed a flagstick measurement to confirm), but Derek cannily pitched to just past the marker, so that he could claim the chocolates. (Not the only chocolates he earned on the day, BTW)

The Golden Hole had no takers, so jackpots to $84. If you’ve been holding back, it’ll soon be worth playing for.

Birdies were few and far between. We noted one from Andrea on the 11th, and Keith on the (extremely difficult) 12th

And interestingly, there wasn’t a single lost ball all day. Are we just not hitting them into the trees anymore, or have we all been to Specsavers?

Dave shanked his second shot on one of the earlier holes, causing Gerry to take evasive action. It was suggested Dave was trying to create a vacancy to enable his elevation from associate to full membership. There are other ways, Dave, other ways.

Steph's in trouble - but she still parred the hole!

We were pleased to welcome Kelly, Glen Pope’s daughter, to the barbecue, where she told us how she had formed the group Charlie’s Angels, after she lost her young son at four months. The group aims to ensure that no family grieves alone after such an event, and Gerry presented a cheque to the group from the members of SOS, to help support those aims.

Given the absence of the WAGBA, we have offered them the alternative of rescheduling on May 31st, or later in January. We wait to hear.

Earle and Boris discuss the merits or otherwise of Trump's tariffs

Captain Andrea announced the results.

A couple of club events still to be finalised - not sure if the International Night will happen this year, and a date and location for the Match Play finalists auction. All will be revealed in due course.

Shelley demonstrates how to play the increasingly popular game of bottle golf

Nest week, a big day for the club - not only is it the first round of the Match Play championship, but the new shirts will be distributed, so you can start using the current ones now to clean the car.

SOS Championship Round 1

The first round of the 2025 Championship series attracted 23 members, all keen to record a sound net score in the 1st game of the 7 game series.

Also playing as a guest today was Mick Fisher  Welcome Mick!

The forecast for Saturday was initially for up to 10mm of rain throughout the morning and strong winds! However, the rain gods, once again, shone on the SOS group and, apart from an early occasional few drops, no-one got wet!

The wind was another thing entirely with persistent strong south westerly gusts carrying many lofted balls well off course.

Stephanie & Keith opt for a cart!
Expecting foul weather?

Gerry, Carol & Keith wearing weather proof gear!

Gim, Gary and Andrea undercover before the start.

Mark W, Gordon & Paul G
decided it was not raining after all!

Peter, Andrea & friend

As usual, players produced a mixed bag of results as their disposition, the weather, aches, pains and equipment produced a wide range of balls deviating from the desired trajectory, direction and distance!

And, so it was, that SOS President, Gerry Tessier managed to snap the shaft of his brand new, top of the range, Ping G440 Max driver! The actual circumstances of how the shaft snapped have not been provided to the blogger, but hopefullly Gerry can get it replaced quickly under warranty!

Gerry demonstrates how it snapped?

Not sure what is going on here as the caption stated:
 "Dude in trouble : Mick / Jason". . . . . !@#$%^*

Drama on the 10th as Mark Wilson (centre of fairway) takes his 2nd shot. Gordon, who decided to take a more direct route to the stick, came unstuck as his ball clipped the top of the trees. Garry, centre of picture in his Burgessmobile, looks on!

Peter snookered behind a native bush on the 11th hole!

Possibly Mick Fisher playing from an impaired position.

A closer look at the unfortunate lie!

Mark W, Gary and Gordon all played two strokes on to the 16th green.
Seen here admiring their handiwork.
Only Mark W managed to birdie the hole!
Peter's ball in front left corner (3rd stroke!).

Before commencing the meeting Gerry checks out
whether or not the two Golden Holes have been won !
They were not !

President Opens Meeting

Gerry opened the post match meeting and welcomed Jason Mewett who is considering a comeback, having been a member of SOS in times past.

Gerry noted that the annual competition for the Austin Cup against the West Australian Blind Golfers Association (WABGA) will be played next Saturday, 10 May, on the Old Course. The competition will be followed by an award ceremony and Sausage Sizzle at the Perry Lakes picnic area.  After the game, players should proceed directly to Perry Lakes after processing their card at the Pro Shop.

Kelly Pope, daughter of Glen Pope, will also be at the sausage sizzle to receive the SOS Donation of $600 on behalf of the Charlies Angels Foundation.

Finally, our SOS Social Organiser, Glenn Kelly, is seeking a venue to hold the annual SOS International Dinner - to be held on 5th, 12th or 19th July.  This is always an entertining night at which the Matchplay Finalists are auctioned off !  Could anyone who can offer or recommend a suitable venue please contact Glenn (Pug Dog) Kelly.

SOS President, Gerry Tessier, addresses the gathering.

Competition Results

SOS Captain Andrea Williams, announced the competition results, declaring Paul Gardner as the winner with a net 71 strokes.

Keith Barrow tied with Andrea for 2nd place with 73 strokes.

The Podium - with Keith, Andrea and Paul holding their gift card prizes!

The Golden Holes on the Tuart Course both roll over after failing to find a winner today! The Hole 3 Pot is topped out at $150 while the rollover pot on Hole 12 is currently $38.

Novelties

Strong competition as always to get your name on the card in the barrrel. The contenders today were:

Ladies LD #17     Carol, outdistanced by Lynley
NTP in 2 #10        Coops, but Gordon was further
NP #6                    Boris, bettered by Peter
Mens LD #8          Mark Wilson
NP #18                  Hilly, but Keith was closer

Birdies - a total of 7 birdies were scored today by:

Gardy     9th & 14th
Hilly       3rd
Earle      15th
Keith      15th
Mark W   17th

Note that tee shots off the 15th tee were assisted by the strong SW wind. Many players were surprised by how much further their ball travelled in today's conditions!

The Raffle, which raised a total of $73,  was won by Peter with token number 37 !

Ash Tray Fund
After the raffle draw, Faye Millar, with the highest score of the day, did an excellent job in calling out the fines. The total donations today from players totalled $53.50 - a much larger sum than is usual  -  possibly due to the wind (?) - there were many lost balls!  Fines collected during the year are accumulated in the Ash Tray Fund and used to make donations, amongst other uses.

Post meeting chatter !
