Winter Cup, Round 2

Not many of us on the course today. What happened? Had some of you read the weather forecast? That's really not on, you know. Golf is a game played in all weathers, sun, rain or snow.

And yes, it did rain. Frequently. Even Gary's strategy of wearing his wet weather gear on the first tee failed to prevent most of us getting at least a little damp.

But, there was the winter cup to play for. And what a cup it is too - many thanks to Charmaine for staying up all night to give it a polish.

Thomas organised a Christmas in July revisited after the game, with ham and bread to warm us all up in the bar.

And for those of you who didn't see Steph's flamenco dancing, here's a taste of what you missed.

A big congratulations to Roger, who for some strange reason was called James all afternoon by Stephanie.

And thanks to Frances for her generous sponsorship this week.

But it was all about the aggregate score, and here are the podium finishers:

Greg
Richard   156 for both

Brenda    154

Stan        145 - winner by a country mile!

Winter Cup Round 1, and Christmas in July

After dire warnings of heavy rain, tempest, deluge and tsunami, we had a very pleasant day's golf, punctuated only by fresh applications of sun cream and pauses for cold drinks. Strange, but there you go.

However, we are still searching for an explanation for the exceptionally poor scores recorded by most, except for Richard Yeo who will, if pressed, explain in some detail the lead up to his remarkable hole-in-one on the second hole.

It's a first for Richard, after some considerable years of playing, so hearty congratulations from one and all.

A big week for birthdays, Derek, Stan and Richard Osborne all celebrating this week.

The Golden Hole remains unclaimed for another week, so it jackpots to around $75 for the next time we play on the old course.

Quiz question for those of you who didn't play this week - who is this?

Scroll to the bottom to find out.

Now here's something you probably didn't know...

Ciarán (Irish pronunciation: [ˈciəɾˠaːn̪ˠ]/[ciəˈɾˠaːn̪ˠ]) or Ciaran (Scottish),[2][3] pronounced /ˈkɪərən/ KEER-ən or /ˈkɪərɔːn/ KEER-awn, is a Gaelic male given name. It means "little dark one"[4] or "little dark-haired one", produced by appending a diminutive suffix to ciar ("black", "dark").[5] The female form is Ciara.

Good to see the "little dark one" picking up a couple of balls there.

So, how are the standings after the first week of competition in the Winter Cup?

We're not awarding Phil the trophy just yet. There's not much separating the field, plenty still in with a chance for the next round.

Many thanks to Jan for her generous sponsorship this week.

Now of course the big event this weekend was the SOS Christmas in July celebration.

And what a celebration it was too.

And of course the iron chook proved a popular gift again.

A big shout out to Thomas and Thuy, who put on a fantastic show - a great event. And to Kerry, who, as always, went to great lengths to make it nice for everyone. We're very lucky to have you guys.

And thanks to everyone else who helped make it happen. When everyone does a little, no-one has to do a lot. Of course, some people did do a lot, but you know what we mean.

So, a great evening.  One to remember.

Oh, and the trousers. Well, you'd guessed anyway, hadn't you?

See you all again next week.
